That is perfectly fine, Maria! It is common for businesses to use separate providers for their bookkeeping and tax preparation. As a bookkeeping firm you would simply prepare your client’s year-end tax documents and then refer them to an accountant or tax preparer for their tax preparation. Can I ask you a question? I am barely fixing to start some classes in tax preparation and the school I am attending wants me to get my ptin number before I start, but the Irs is requesting a Business name and mailing address to that business when applying for a ptin number, but I haven't even started thinking that far ahead yet. What am I supposed to do? Just use my first and last name in Lieu of a business name? If I do that then once I decide on a name can I change it?

Hi Rhonda, congratulations on your new journey! In box 5a there is a box to check if your business address is the same as your personal mailing address. Box 5b gives the option to check "yes" or "no" to the following question: Are you self-employed or an owner, partner, or officer of a tax return preparation business. If you do not have a business yet, then you would check no and proceed to the next box as instructed on the application.
