I'm surprised the situation isn't reversed. That publishing and voting is for the people who own the game and creating on Hammer is for everyone.

Wouldn't that solve all the problems? I mean people could make maps for fun, and if they like it i feel it is kind of logic that they will buy the game to be able to publish. This way we would see less self promoting bots and more maps made by people who enjoy the process.

That's assuming that it's the workshop that's the issue, which it cant be because you can still publish on the workshop for free apprently. So it may be some other unknown reason that valve won't want to share, or maybe they have all their money so they don't care at this point.

If you want to try out mapping for free the best option is probably to start out experimenting with tf2 mapping or even just the base source sdk, as those are free options and hammer doesn’t really change much depending on the game you’re using it with. Still a bummer you can’t specifically test out CS:GO mapping on your own but there ARE free options to test your mapping.

It's probably due to engine and encoder licenses. Thus the SDK has to cost money, cause Valve either has a running license, or a pay-per-new-user license.
@TheLolilol321

CS:GO is in a really weird spot. You'd think Valve would encourage free use of the SDK since the content created could draw users in but Valve has effectively discouraged community servers by hiding them away in the obscure server browser. Not to mention disallowed server skin mods. It's a shame, really. I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours in CS:S playing on WCS, WowMod and RPG servers but I guess Valve doesn't really profit anything from that, making it hard for them to justify any time not spent on competitive or danger-zone.

As amazing as hammer is, it is also extremely outdated and incredibly hard to use, having to pay that much money just for it in my opinion is a bad idea from Valve even if it is so to prevent bots. Also VSDK comes with TF2, for free, doesn't make much sense now, does it.

It's incredibly easy to use and learn, it's just not very well designed and everything takes a lot more time to do than it should. It has a terrible UI layout and hotkey design, and lots of limitations you would expect from an engine double its age. Its greatness comes from the fact that it's the only way to make maps for source, definitely not from being a good way to do it. Eerily similar to Maya and it's character animation workflow.

I do already own CS from years in the past, but I definitely understand the people who don't have money to buy it. I come from a low income family, growing up around other low income families, and really none of the kids in these families earn any money regular. I'd get maybe 5 euros one month, and then none the next, it's not easy as a kid. Neither do you earn much from celebratory days, like birthdays or Christmas either. I usually got 100 euros maximum from a birthday, and then I'd have to decide to which broken thing to put that money towards. I work for a developer of a free2play and we also lock our map editor behind a paywall. If you've made a purchase before, you can use the editor and play your maps in single player. If you bought our standard "skip the grind" bundle, you get to publish your maps for everyone to use in multiplayer. Making an editor is a lot of work, and even more if you want it to be easy to use. I don't blame Valve for keeping the price tag on the editor.

Back when CSGO was buy to play, I guess it made sense to bundle them together, since you needed to own the game to really make use of the tools, but it does seem a little weird they would restrict it now, especially if the wall doesn't even stop bots from ruining things for everybody. If enough people pushed for it, Valve might end up relenting. Probably a non issue these days when you can access powerful game engines for free and do infinitely more without suffering through late 90s UI.

I remember being in this exact circumstance because I joined Steam when Portal 2 was announced, and Valve was giving Portal 1 away for free to promote it. I *thought* I'd be granted the SDK for free as well, but the fact that the game was free barred me from this. I ended up spending hours on Portal 1 just ent_create ing the HL2 NPCs and Impulse 101-ing my way to weapons. Portal 1 was my Garry's Mod for years, it's funny to think back on. But back on topic, I think it is *incredibly* reasonable that for a private company like Valve with so many secrets that they ask for just $15 US in order to use their tried and tested tools. You can blow $250 USD on some lesser-known proprietary 3D game-making software on Steam or spend an hour's pay (except food service workers who deserve non-tip-dependent wages) on a handy level editor.
@emberytp
@emberytp 4 жыл бұрын
Also, I believe in open source software. I think proprietary stuff is dumb and just divides efforts. Open source software like Godot Engine and GB Studio are really their own league of programs. To me, Valve doesn't sound interested in changing their methodology at all if they're still asking gamedevs to pay up for a licence to sell an original game on the Source engine. Part of me wonders if all things Source 1 will become free-r as it becomes a tool of history rather than for active development. It feels like this state of "paying for the level editor" is a concequence of Half Life: Alyx and the associated official Source 2 release taking so damn long.

The thing in my opinion on not making the software for free is that there's people who just want to try it. I own many source games, so I don't have this issue. Although, I did want to try to use Hammer, but I don't find that kind of thing fun. There's probably people out there that want to try it, but scared of wasting $15 on something they wont use. Also, support Free Software www.fsf.org

You should ask one of your friends that has bought CS:GO for "steam family sharing" and you can play every game/app that he has including SDK. And if you have level 0 on Steam you can send your files (after you finished the map) to your friend. So he can publish it.

Same with me :( And I nealy had no reason to buy it because I already reached rank 21 and got the prime and also, because of the inflation in my country, when CSGO went free, its price had risen up. (Went from 25 to 77 in our currency) And it doesn't change with Steam Sales too, unfortunately.

Gonna have to disagree with you on this one Phillip. Sure, it's Valve's right to charge for modding tools. They can charge for whatever they want. That doesn't make it a good business decision, or good for the players. The added value, both it terms of dollars and fun that mods add to a game vastly outweighs the pocket change they're getting out of this. I've never paid for modding tools and I never will. You can call that entitlement if you want, but it doesn't change the result, less fun mods.

I think that the SDK itself should come with the game free but the workshop_publish command should be restricted to prime users. That way the workshop will not be flooded with bad submissions from bots and “casuals”. Anyone who is serious enough about the game to make proper maps fot everyone to play should buy prime.

But Valve didn't exactly make Hammer. Hammer is just a *very* improved version of ID Software's WorldCraft editor for Quake. Yes, it *is* more Valve than ID now, but it still feels wrong that they would sell copies of Hammer regardless. I mean, did ID Software ever expect this when they sold Valve a Quake engine license? I don't think so. They expected that Valve would extend the engine and editor, make and sell games with them, and license out the extended engine to other developers. They probably didn't expect that Valve would then sell access to the editor. It's not even like this is the only way to access Hammer. (Almost) Every other Source game comes with Hammer. It's just the one with a few CS:GO-related files that costs money.

Keep in mind that the Source SDK (for CS:GO) is still proprietary software and it likely has other reasons not to include as part of free installations of CS:GO. It's important to note that different versions of the Source SDK, while they do share some, have different license agreements and ToS depending on the distribution. The game and SDK are separate products, and Valve has chosen to give you tools for authoring custom content for the game if you decide to pay for the main product. I think that is perfectly fine. That is just my opinion, would love to hear yours!

Loading up my first completed map and seeing the bot's play on it was one of the most magical moments I ever had in gameing. If you own the game, just try making a map. it doesn't need to be good. It doesn't even need to be balanced. Map making has teached me a lot things, and playing on a map I made, with friends has been some of the most fun I ever had with cs:go. If you have any interest in mapping go for it, it's so much fun. It might be hard in the beginning but once you figure stuff out it's great. (Philip has made great tutorials for this on his channel. I highly recommend you check them out.) And Philip if you see this, thank you so much for what you have introduced me to. (And sorry for any typos in this. It surprises me that the game would be made free to open it up to a larger crowd but the platform to allow people to create for the game is not, I figured they would leave all avenues open to make players more susceptible to being enthralled and less likely to depart from the game.

Annoying that I unlocked prime by reaching rank 21, but now if I want to map I have to buy prime again for no reason other than to get the SDK. This just seems to encourage making another account to map/buy prime on so I "get the value" from buying prime again. I have the money to buy prime, but why would I spend $15 on a product that I've already received 90% of for free? If it's important to Valve that CSGO be a product that "anyone in the world can pick up and play the game for free," why wouldn't this also apply to mapping? I spent $15 on the operation, but that isn't good enough, apparently.

In my opinion I think the reason is to keep a value in the premium version. Because some people won't buy it, just because they realize they'll get the bonus of having it for free anyways, so including the source sdk in the free version would make buying prime worthless.

Csgo is 15$ when you factor in RPG maker is really expensive and less powerful that isn't a lot. If you can't save up for it, you clearly don't have the patience for source sdk. Which is one of the hardest game engines for mapping, and the hardest to get recognition for.
