CS:GO is in a really weird spot. You'd think Valve would encourage free use of the SDK since the content created could draw users in but Valve has effectively discouraged community servers by hiding them away in the obscure server browser. Not to mention disallowed server skin mods. It's a shame, really. I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours in CS:S playing on WCS, WowMod and RPG servers but I guess Valve doesn't really profit anything from that, making it hard for them to justify any time not spent on competitive or danger-zone.

It's incredibly easy to use and learn, it's just not very well designed and everything takes a lot more time to do than it should. I remember being in this exact circumstance because I joined Steam when Portal 2 was announced, and Valve was giving Portal 1 away for free to promote it. I *thought* I'd be granted the SDK for free as well, but the fact that the game was free barred me from this. I ended up spending hours on Portal 1 just ent_create ing the HL2 NPCs and Impulse 101-ing my way to weapons. Portal 1 was my Garry's Mod for years, it's funny to think back on. But back on topic, I think it is *incredibly* reasonable that for a private company like Valve with so many secrets that they ask for just $15 US in order to use their tried and tested tools. You can blow $250 USD on some lesser-known proprietary 3D game-making software on Steam or spend an hour's pay (except food service workers who deserve non-tip-dependent wages) on a handy level editor.
@emberytp4 жыл бұрын
Also, I believe in open source software. I think proprietary stuff is dumb and just divides efforts. Open source software like Godot Engine and GB Studio are really their own league of programs. To me, Valve doesn't sound interested in changing their methodology at all if they're still asking gamedevs to pay up for a licence to sell an original game on the Source engine. Part of me wonders if all things Source 1 will become free-r as it becomes a tool of history rather than for active development. It feels like this state of "paying for the level editor" is a concequence of Half Life: Alyx and the associated official Source 2 release taking so damn long.

I just got into gmod mapping yesterday because I want to use it to do UX tests at a distance with the quarantine and stuff. I actually used one of your 2012 hammer tutorials on loading in custom models for this.

If the SDK is gonna be free, why even buy csgo? You can even get prime for free, which i think was a stupid idea. Anyways great video as always Phillip :)
@ferdinandhansel32484 жыл бұрын
You can get prime "for free" with a LOT of time invested. You have to invest way more time to get prime "for free" than you would to have to for earning 15 dollars. Go blood donating or make some stupid online survey. Takes a lot less time to get prime.
@colgatev27644 жыл бұрын
@@ferdinandhansel3248 I understand you view, but I still think that prime should be paid only.

The weirdest part is that Hammer is already available for free from the Alien Swarm and Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop authoring tools.

Well that stinks. I was trying to rank up to rank 21 (currently 14) so that I would be able to get the version of hammer editor so that I can back port, but welp......

But Valve didn't exactly make Hammer. Hammer is just a *very* improved version of ID Software's WorldCraft editor for Quake. Yes, it *is* more Valve than ID now, but it still feels wrong that they would sell copies of Hammer regardless. I mean, did ID Software ever expect this when they sold Valve a Quake engine license? I don't think so. They expected that Valve would extend the engine and editor, make and sell games with them, and license out the extended engine to other developers. They probably didn't expect that Valve would then sell access to the editor. It's not even like this is the only way to access Hammer. (Almost) Every other Source game comes with Hammer. It's just the one with a few CS:GO-related files that costs money.

Keep in mind that the Source SDK (for CS:GO) is still proprietary software and it likely has other reasons not to include as part of free installations of CS:GO. It's important to note that different versions of the Source SDK, while they do share some, have different license agreements and ToS depending on the distribution. The game and SDK are separate products, and Valve has chosen to give you tools for authoring custom content for the game if you decide to pay for the main product. I think that is perfectly fine. That is just my opinion, would love to hear yours!

I leveled up to prime in csgo, all i need to do is buy the game with “prime status” and it will come,with source sdk? How can i get the sdk with a leveled up account
@Ninjarlos3 жыл бұрын
I already have Prime by reaching level 21 a while ago, and the day I posted this comment, my dumbass decided to take the risk to buy the Prime Status upgrade just to see if I can actually get the Kit. And I do! Sucks that it isn't free, but Valve should really have a description about that in the game.

Loading up my first completed map and seeing the bot's play on it was one of the most magical moments I ever had in gameing. If you own the game, just try making a map. it doesn't need to be good. It doesn't even need to be balanced. Map making has teached me a lot things, and playing on a map I made, with friends has been some of the most fun I ever had with cs:go. If you have any interest in mapping go for it, it's so much fun. It might be hard in the beginning but once you figure stuff out it's great. (Philip has made great tutorials for this on his channel. I highly recommend you check them out.) And Philip if you see this, thank you so much for what you have introduced me to. (And sorry for any typos in this. I wrote this at 4 a.m. in the morning because I woke up too early.)

It surprises me that the game would be made free to open it up to a larger crowd but the platform to allow people to create for the game is not, I figured they would leave all avenues open to make players more susceptible to being enthralled and less likely to depart from the game.

Maybe it is to protect mapping communitys from too many new players, who can often be impatient and resistent to feedback... But then again, we have all been at that stage

Yeah , it sucks , i too already reached the prime level , but i joined at the F2P time , and i just cant justify spending 15$ , oh well i guess , i even already planned a map , its called Downtown with a heavy use of exterior and height along with smaller cutaway interior - i even made a group to work with , alas its not meant to be

Annoying that I unlocked prime by reaching rank 21, but now if I want to map I have to buy prime again for no reason other than to get the SDK. This just seems to encourage making another account to map/buy prime on so I "get the value" from buying prime again. I have the money to buy prime, but why would I spend $15 on a product that I've already received 90% of for free? If it's important to Valve that CSGO be a product that "anyone in the world can pick up and play the game for free," why wouldn't this also apply to mapping? I spent $15 on the operation, but that isn't good enough, apparently.
@emilianozamora3994 жыл бұрын
In my opinion I think the reason is to keep a value in the premium version. Because some people won't buy it, just because they realize they'll get the bonus of having it for free anyways, so including the source sdk in the free version would make buying prime worthless.
@thechannelitrollwith16454 жыл бұрын
This is such a non-issue. Why in the world has this evolved into anything more than "oh, okay I'll buy it." Gaming costs money, and this game costs far less money than most. People are incredible.

It makes sense. Prime is like £11 which kinda is a lot for a 9 YEAR OLD game. But with and SDK with it, it starts to make the £11 worth it.
@LRAStartFox4 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with it costing money is for the people that aren't going to spend $15 on something that they think they'll probably only use once. It's easy to get more value out of those $15 if you weren't going to use it with any frequency
@piers3894 жыл бұрын
It's worth buying, although I think Valve could offer it as a separate piece at a reduced price - maybe £5.99 or something like that.

Csgo is 15$ when you factor in RPG maker is really expensive and less powerful that isn't a lot. If you can't save up for it, you clearly don't have the patience for source sdk. Which is one of the hardest game engines for mapping, and the hardest to get recognition for.

I think that game developers, upon release of a game, should release all of the tools and development runtime necessary to mod/customize aspects of the game for free, or bundled with the game.
@seelz11364 жыл бұрын
I personally think Valve can just release the SDK tools as some sort of DLC for maybe 5 dollars instead of not saying that by buying prime you can also obtain the tool. Its also weird how they think TF2 is okay with free SDK, but not CSGO.
