Fun Japanese Confederate fact! The CSS Stonewall was an ironclad commissioned by the Confederate Navy in 1865. Sadly, she never ended up seeing service, as the war ended shortly thereafter. She was sold to the Tokugawa Shogunate who renamed her Kōtetsu, and finally ended up in the hands of the Imperial government. She played a major role in several naval battles during the Boshin War and the Meiji Restoration. She served the Japanese government faithfully for several decades, before finally being laid to rest in 1888.

As a descendant of several ancestors who were members of Waul's Texas Legion, I'm heartened by this rendition! Although from talking to native Nihongo-speakers in Japan, the Japanese know how to pronounce "Texas" the way we do-- they're not hard sounds for Japanese to pronounce. They could have sung it with the proper Texas pronunciation, instead of whatever that was-- Japan made up their own word for "Texas"? That'd be Bizarro!....it's like how they know how to make the same cut of pork in Japan, but don't know how to cure it to make it into bacon. 🥓

CSN Captain Junichiro Hendrickson (formelry Josiah Hendriskson) built a minka style house on his Georgia property. All his house slaves were made to wear kimonos, and the females had to dress as geishas. He taught his slaves how to sing many traditional Southern songs in both English and Japanese. This song was his favorite while drinking green tea in the evening. Cpt. Hendrickson's fascination with Japanese culture came during his time with Comodore Perry, and being one of the first Americans to enter the mysterious eastern country. Because of the Union blockade, Junichiro found little work as a seaman, so he helped out on land any way he could. When General Sherman came to his plantation, Hendrickson brandished his katana and attempted a samurai charge, where he met his end by 50 yankee guns.

Many don’t know the history of the song. One of the first public performances was in New Orleans when a Texas brigade was passing through. The song made the men so excited that a riot started after a policeman tried to quiet one of the Texans who wouldn’t stop loudly cheering. The riot was stopped eventually due to the mayor and the Texas colonel personally showing up to calm the men.
