I bought a Guild D-40 made in 1978 . It was 5 years old at the time but looked 105. Dents, holes, cigarette burns, capo rash on the neck but the sound ahh! I paid a month’s salary for it (360 pounds). I took it to a luthier about 10 years ago to get it restored and cleaned up . He wondered why I’d want a guitar like that restored. After 6 months he told me he had the guitar ready for me .He did a beautiful job of my guitar and he said to me that he had never heard a more beautiful sounding instrument . Now he understood why wanted it fixed up . I love your lovely helpful and calming videos . Thank you

Oh my…the old vintage Guilds are wonderful instruments. I can only imagine the sound and I would expect yours to ring out and easily cut through a group of instruments. Does yours have the three piece back and sides - Or is it the mahogany. You made a great choice! Enjoy❤️
@taproot381Күн бұрын
It’s solid mahogany back and sides with a spruce top. It weighs a ton . Yes it’s loud as it was built for projecting the sound without the help of a microphone. Originally the action was very high so that was the first thing I had adjusted when I bought it . Thanks for your reply.

I got a Takamine 6 string from a pawnshop in Nashville, Tennessee for 400 bucks years ago the electronics quit working but they used to work I still love it it has flame maple on the back.

I recently retired and started restoring old guitars I picked up a USA made DX martin from the late 90s That guitar sounds amazing Unfortunately the truss rod was striped and i had to shave the saddle to get the action down but it played nice now its my fav. I restored a 70s Alveraz martin copy made in Japan for my wife's friend it turned out so nice i hated giving it back to him so i am looking for another one for me Peace to you and yours

@@garya7893 it is so much fun to find a really great project and make it play again. My favorite find was an old Gibson j-50 I bought it with a huge hole ripped on the top - bridge was missing. ($400) I posted a video on it… way back before I stated Guitar Notes And Notions. I had to remove the back and fix all the braces add a new bridge plate. I than added the missing piece on top. Put on a bridge and it is now an awesome player. I sold that one for money for another project It does get adictive❤️❤️

Happy Leftover Days! Useful tips. About half my ladies are used. Gifted them all a trip to the spa (my nearby luthier). They appreciate being pampered. And, truthfully, I take great pride in giving a new home to a gal with a lot of spunk. My Reverb tips: read loads of postings, get to know the dealers, message them to learn more about a guitar that interests you, and always look at how long the guitar has been up for sale (some of the best deals can be had by offering 15 to 20% below asking on a guitar that has been up over 6 months), and be respectful because you’re building a relationship with another guitar nerd. It’s a fun hobby.

May your leftover days last long enough to want tacos or spaghetti 🤣 these are great reverb tips. I have bought guitars on eBay but that forum has changed a lot! Again, Great tips. I especially like the “respectful” comment. ❤️❤️

What a beautiful, old guitar, Ms Cindy. Sound advice on buying older guitars and the same can apply to new guitars as well. I'll be in Nashville next week and planning to see George while I'm there. Great upload, ma'am 👍

Great stuff. Also tuning machines, headstock breaks, nut and saddle condition, tapping top to hear loose braces…

Great tip! Also could add buzz as you play up the fret board, and guitar finish. I bought an old USA Tacoma once and the guitar sounded great and played awesome but the finish lifted and was peeling in huge pieces. The cost to refinish that guitar was not worth it. Thanks for sharing the tips and listening in❤️

Since buying one with a striped truss rod i take a few Allen wrenches with me and ask if i can check if moves before i buy

That's a great idea. I usually take an the action measurement tool. Having a broken truss rod is definitely a big deal. Costly fix. Thanks for sharing ❤️

Thanks! I enjoyed your video. I just came back from a long drive to go guitar shopping. I compared my 2008 Larrivée D-03 to two Martin D-28’s, two Gibson J-45’s and several Taylor’s . I decided to get another Larrivée if I do get a second acoustic. $3k or $4k is a lot to spend at 70 years of age but I might as well enjoy whatever time I have left. - Good video! Happy holidays!

Very nice. Do you play the Gibson and Martin frequently? Or do you play a more recent model most of the time?
@WendiPatterson-f7eКүн бұрын
@@guitarnotions I kinda switch around a bit but I do play a little Taylor at the three gigs where if anyone grabs it or gets out of hand it is not a big loss. I play three gigs where they are developmental disable and sometimes, they get a little rowdy.

Is a crack in the top a deal breaker? (repaired [or not])
@guitarnotionsКүн бұрын
It’s not a deal breaker. The cost to repair is around $20 an inch. But I am concerned if it extends under the bridge. Sometimes you have to remove the bridge (that’s an added expense) also if the crack does not come together it may need a splice of thin wood to fill the gap. I bought my Martin m-21 and it has a repaired crack. I got a great deal on it and the repair is holding fine. (I did add some cleats when I got it home). But you have to look close to see the repair and it still sounds awesome. It has a solid wood top and that too is something to consider. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. ❤️
