Good sir Eu and Sm gave different nagnetic moment because the spin orbit coupling constants for these ions are small and excited states thermally accessible this will popolated excited state and hence different magnetic moment

1.why Gd +3 is paramagnetic though it has half filled electronic configu.? 2.why cerium+3 and Yb+3 are colourless though they have unpaired electron?

ce (+3) and yb (+3) dont absorb visible light.
