The reality is pretty much different. Most of these fields demand phd to have good career and exponential growth in it. After spending your precious 5-6 year in phd lot of reputed institutes demand post doc now. Even i have seen talented minds with post doc degree finding it difficult to start off as a professor because of low vacancies. On top of that there's competition too. Lot of people have already moved towards doing phd and they're at such a position in life where they couldn't find a lecturer position and join a less worthy college which pay less. So is it really worth spending these many years in getting a degree and still struggle to get a job? Sadly without phd in companies your growth will stop after certain point or it will take more years to reach higher position than with phd. So each field has pros and cons. But it's upon us to decide. You need to consider the factors such as age, where do you see yourself after 5 6 years, how eager you're to settle, family responsibilities and many more. Ofcourse there are opportunities but it's you who will decide which one to grab and which to leave. Hope it helps
