is there a previous sibling selector like adjacent selector

Not really but some had some success using :has. But thats beyond the scope of this tutorial

Good question. You can target things in many different ways eg by adding classes to the HTML. But combinators are useful when you dont have direct access to the HTML

Yes you can use classes instead. But sometimes you dont have access ti HTML like when using WordPress
