New Changes To CSX Defect Detectors. 5 Locomotives On Huge CSX Mixed Freight Train With DPU Locomotive In The Middle Followed By CSX Train With More Old Classic Locomotives. Norfolk Southern Trains On CSX Track Included. These trains are in Woodlawn and Glendale, Ohio.
First we take a look at the CSX defect detector in Woodlawn, Ohio. Two trains pass it and we hear the defect detector transmit its signal to the crew on 160.230. There are a couple of new changes. The first change is that the defect detector goes off just as the front of the train passes it. This is fairly new as it used to only go off after the train passed it. Now it does both. The second transmission gives information on defects and gives axle counts. The next change is a newer change that took place this year. The crew on the train acknowledges the message from the defect detector. They transmit over the radio that they have heard the detector activate. The paddles next to the tracks are for dragging equipment and the sensors are for overheating equipment. I have another video that goes into more detail. The two trains that pass the detectors are a tanker train and an auto racks train and both are northbound.
The next train is a northbound local that I almost missed. It came by while I was at the McDonalds drive through in Woodlawn. I was able to catch up to it and then get in front for a good video of it passing through Glendale, Ohio. The remaining trains are in Glendale.
We see a couple of Norfolk Southern trains and several CSX locals. This ex B&O line is directional running. Most of the trains on this line run northbound and most of the trains on the nearby Norfolk Southern line run southbound. They come together in Cincinnati and Hamilton.
The last two trains are the best. I filmed them at the border of Glendale and Woodlawn. The first one is a CSX manifest with a DPU. Check out the first 4 locomotives. We have some classic units. The last train has classic locomotives pulling it also. These trains were only minutes apart. Notice that the trains in Glendale did not use their horns. Glendale is a no train horn zone. I did a series of videos showing the transition to the no train horn zone a few years ago. Glendale is one of my favorite places to watch trains. I estimate 15 to 20 trains every 24 hours including Amtrak. Amtrak Cardinal makes 3 round trips a week running between Chicago and New York City. You can also hear the dispatcher on 160.320 talking to the train crews and 452.9375 might be useful for the EOT.
Filmed Wednesday, July 19, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Mr JT You're one of the best videographers there is when it comes to variety with trains ,history, information about detect monitors ,what freight the trains are carrying, your scanner info, your fur babies and the location you're filming. We appreciate your sacrifice and efforts to capture all this great show. Thanks. Enjoyed this. 😊

I noticed that the trains going through that intersection weren't blowing their horns. But I also noticed, for the first time, that the crossing was guarded on both sides by crossing gates to prevent people from going around the gate. That makes sense.

I suggest that all trains pull a caboose. to monitor safe train operation and limit train lengths to about 6 blocks when hauling hazmat!
@johnstudd4245
@johnstudd4245 11 ай бұрын
@@ronmorrison1964 I'm afraid your suggestions about cabooses will fall on deaf ears, that was one of the arguments the unions used to try to avoid the caboose being eliminated back in the 1980's... or did it start in the 70's. About train length....there have been some serious complaints from communities about the long trains since the "precision schedule railroading"(forgive me if I did not get that exactly correct) went into effect, and the longer trains that seem to have been a by product of that.

Thank you for this video of trains that you saw at Woodlawn and Glendale, Ohio, Jaw Tooth! The close-up of the defect detector parts in and around the tracks at Milepost 13.5 is interesting to see. I am pleased to learn that CSX now requires the engineer to acknowledge that he/she has heard the defect detector's message. The acknowledgement of the defect detector's message is more than likely the result of the Norfolk Southern's derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Now the CSX defect detector also lets you know that a train has started to pass the defect detector.

I enjoy your videos from Glendale without the ear-piercing horns. I’d venture to say that the new procedure with defect detectors is a result of the East Palestine catastrophe. The NTSB hasn’t released their final findings yet and I applaud CSX for being foresighted Also, I live 20 miles from East Palestine and from what I read and hear NS is doing everything they can to remedy the situation. My prayers and thoughts to the residents of East Palestine.

Hey JT...thanks for putting the Baofeng radio "on stage"!! It may be "cheapo", but it sure performs. After I saw you using it, I bought the UV-6R, and it's a 'Little Giant"! With the squelch set at "3", I can hear transmissions up to 6 miles in each direction from my location. I haven't done much with the radio...just "sit" on the frequencies in my area. Thanks for featuring it. Also in the "thanks department" is this great video...working your "Ohio Magic" once again!! Glendale looks like an awesome place...sorry, though, to see (hear) it's a "quiet zone". Terrific coverage, though, of what appeared to be "local" traffic along that great "semi-street-running" trackage..."SpongeBob" GP40-3 portrait @7:50 is "killer". Another "square-cab" SD40-3 plus an original @17:11 really got my attention...check out the D&H and Seaboard System covered hoppers on the headend!! The real "show-stopper" was @21:14, with a "pure" SD40 leading a pair of "SpongeBob" SD40-3's...wow 😲😲!! As WWOT would say, "Are you kidding me???" Great show, my friend... 👍👍👌👌

I live about 40 miles north of there up near Clearfield, PA where RJ Corman has a yard and owns the surrounding shortlines. There's an ethanol plant that sits right next to their yard so they bring a lot of the corn in and the finished ethanol out. Plus there are still some active coal mines around the area that they service also. The ethanol plant alone though keeps them really busy.

Interesting. When on Amtrak, the Engineer and Conductor both have acknowledged the defect detectors for a long time. Does the DD now relay the acknowledgement to the dispatcher? CSX detectors on the run from Miami to DC always were broadcast, wait, broadcast the results and often included the speed.

Top o' the mornin' to ya! A lot of standard cab engines around there, not a lot of wide nose crew cabs. I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't understand the Sponge Bob reference. One of the things I like about your videos is the local info, the blurbs about local attractions and history. This is the first I've heard of the new defect detectors, and the new protocols. It's also the first time I've seen any of the detection equipment. It would be nice to know what the different components do. Keep up the good work!

The full nickname is _"Sponge Bob Square Cab"_ , referring to the rebuilt units that feature a square cab without the beveled upper corners when viewed from either end, and its resemblance to the cartoon character.

Item 9 in the timetable if it is the same nation wide is an instruction to only blow the horn if a collision is eminent !!!! We used to have that in Kingsville, Tx until the UP merged then all the crossings were lit up and train began blowing for the crossings and ran through town at yard speed not to exceed 20mph

What sort of defects are detected? Who, besides the engineer, are the messages sent to? Thanks for posting!

Also have detectors for flat spots on the wheels. It detects the bang when the flat spot hits the rail.
