There's somebody manning that hill right now. 24/7, 365, rain or shine, the hump never stops!

Well done, steady video! Thank you for sharing it. Is the locomotive especially geared for slow advance at an ideal speed to allow uncoupling?
@RRVideosAndSound10 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. The slug or calf is optimized for low speed only. I am not sure if the gearing is different or there are special windings on the motors to give it more torque and less speed. It gets its power from the locomotive with the strobes. But they also have "road slugs" which are perfectly happy at 60MPH. Maybe some one with some more knowledge could join in

The slug is just a traction motor on the belt pack box it has stop, coast brake, coast, couple, 4,7,10 for the speeds

The remote has great control of the excitation like a pacesetter. There's some extra stuff in the remote for hump operations even. I've done some hump ones for CP...

is it safe to say that most times you see a train with the amber beacons on them, they are being radio controlled?
@RRVideosAndSound6 жыл бұрын
Not sure....I recall some locomotives in Chicago with strobes instead of cyclops lights before remote control existed. Also, out West, a lot of power has lights along the outline of the engine that flash when the engine goes into emergency...in the desert you can see this for miles.

what are slugs and what are they used for?
@RRVideosAndSound9 жыл бұрын
***** It is a machine with just electric traction motors, no diesel engine. It is designed to accept electric power from another engine with a diesel motor. The purpose of these units is to provide extra axles to grip the rail.
@jeffgriffin88016 жыл бұрын
Ur wrong. They're used for breaking and a computer to link the remote to.

Slugs enable a more complete use of a locomotive's power output than would otherwise be possible. A locomotive has more power than it can use for tractive effort at low speeds - at a certain point, the application of more power only makes the wheels slip. By spreading the power over the additional wheels of a slug, greater tractive effort can be had.
@25mfd3 жыл бұрын
@@chuckmvs correct... also those slugs are ballasted heavy to achieve the extra tractive effort

I'm surprised that the BLET let management get away with a robot train.
@25mfd7 жыл бұрын
Not much they could do about it. The workers don't own anything except their ability to work. Not much negotiating power when you don't have any cards. It's either play ball or go home.
@zacharynewsom81535 жыл бұрын
The blet didn’t wanna line switches it was introduced to engineers first they didn’t accept it so it moved to conductors

You can say what you want, REMOTE CONTROLLED LOCOMOTIVES ARE NOT SAFE! CSX HAS ALREADY HAD ONE MAN KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING REMOTE CONTROLLED EQUIPMENT!
