The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.

I went once to Chicago. Took this train because a guy told me to have fun while doing it. I had a blast!!!! This was 1987. I do recall La Salle/Van Buren for that was my exit to go to my hotel. It was a great experience. Chicago is a great city!

I visited Chicago for a conference in 2018. We had a day off so I looked and figured the Brown Line would be an interesting and safe ride. Started downtown went to the end, transferred and rode back. I felt safe and found it a lot of fun. I'm from Vancouver Canada. This ride, the deep dish pizza, and Chicago dogs were some of the highlights. Thanks Chicago. We did get thrown out of Buddy Guy's Blues Bar but that's another story !!

People should break the security cameras at the stations for privacy. It would be weird to live in a house where trains are constantly running right past your wall or over your roof. This is one of the only memories I have left of my grandfather. He worked on the CTA at kimball and took me for a ride on a train for the first time. He had me look out the window as we rode around. I miss him so much.

This is an excellent video. I love riding around and looking at buildings, the older, the better. I have never been to Chicago and doubt that I'll get the chance to go there, but videos like this are the next best thing. I spend about 2 1/2 hours each night before bed looking for videos like this one. I have this page bookmarked so I can come back and enjoy it again. I also plan to try some of those transfers. Also, thanks for putting the names of the stations on. It certainly saves me the trouble of trying to pause the video to read the names on signs.

I rode this train to work for many years. Sometimes no heat and no air conditioning. We used to open all the interconnecting doors and get a great breeze through the train. In the winter my feet would be numb by the time we got downtown! Oh, the memories.

Living in Philadelphia, it's beyond weird seeing an elevated train in such an open residential area. Like our Market-Frankford Line does go through residential areas, but it still follows main streets with a ton of businesses on them the whole way, and the houses are much more densely packed than this. That and these stations look more like they're designed to be on the ground.

Visited Chicago for the first time last week, I’m from New England and there’s a bit of a rivalry between the Northeast and Midwest...I absolutely loved it. Definitely recommend visiting if you’ve never been as it’s a beautiful city with so much to do. There is a lot I remember about the CTA rail system from the Loop going south. The old green and white trains, the jolt when the train started, the squeal when the train made its turns. The name change...Jackson Park "B" trains and Englewood "A" trains became the Green line, Lake/Dan Ryan became the Red line. Lake/Dan Ryan ran parallel to the expressway and became elevated after 31st going into Cermak. Jackson Park/Englewood would start off elevated then go into subway at Roosevelt. The "skip stop" on both lines. These videos have really sparked up nostalgia for me...one day I would like to ride these lines...notably the Blue line..just to be adventurous!!

I've long had a love affair with Chicago but haven't been to this beautiful city as yet but this ride on the Brown line made me feel like I knew the city! God Willing, I will get to visit this fantastic city on the lake! Nice job filming the ride and providing pertinent information. I should try a similar project here in New York! I always noticed on TV that Chicago's elevated lines don't have protective side rails (for the most part). Elevated sections of New York City trains have them, start to end. Not that they would do much if a train tipped over. It's likely for track workers and emergencies. Just an observation. These are great videos if planning a trip to the windy city. 😊

While rare, there have been train cars over tracks. In late 1970s, the Lake Street El (now called Green Line) crashed into each other and sent train over the rails in the Loop to street below. Videos on YT of news reports when happened, like here: chicagoist.com/2016/02/05/cta_derailment_1977.php

Yes, I feel the same. I am from Düsseldorf/Germany and it's so fuckin' expensive (especially for a student) to fly to Chicago for a week or so....damn! But I will definitely visit Chicago someday, I hope you will do the same! Interessant, dass es soviele deutschsprachige Personen gibt, die sich ebenfalls für Chicago interessieren, da die Stadt außerhalb der Staaten wenig bis kaum (positive) Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Alle wollen nach San Fransisco, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, aber kaum nach Chicago...schade!

Lassen Sie Ihren wunsch wahr werden. Excuse me if that is not perfect German. If you and "Random Vids" reach our side of the Atlantic and you visit Chicago enjoy but use caution and good sense. Stay in the Loop or the downtown area to the near north of the Loop or the neighborhoods to the farther north of the downtown area. Avoid the subway/metro trains late at night weekdays or anytime after dark on weekends. Avoid riding the Red or Green Lines more than two or three stops south of the Loop. Avoid winter as the weather can be brutal, and the homeless defecate in the cars they use as home during winter.

I was watching Bernie Mac and saw they were on the brown line and immediately thought “This is a Brown Line train to Kimball” it took me back to when my uncle used to drive the train and I went to work with him. I didn’t even recognize Kimball I haven’t seen it in person since 2004.

Not really. The wooden track cross ties (the Brits I think call them "sleepers" for God knows what reasons) and the upper support platform on which the track is placed is wood but it is all supported by steel columns between street level and track level.

Loved it! Brought me back to 2006-2016 when I lived in Chicago. To get to work, I'd take the Red at Sheridan towards 95th, then get off at Monroe. Weekends, it's all about the Blue and Brown lines. Thanks for this!

Don't get me wrong I live in Chicago at safe to visit but not to stay I'm not trying to scare you my City's beautiful place but there are some parts where you should keep away

@@rayray9865 I took my family from Kentucky to Chicago around 1990 and I wanted to take the kids on the "L". I stopped a policeman walking down the street and asked him how did you get up there to get on the train. He looked at me and said, "Where are you from?" I told him Kentucky. He said, "Man . . . you don't want to get on the "L" with your family. My advice is not to get anywhere near the overhead and then get the hell out of Chicago and go back to Kentucky where it is safe!" I thought he was kidding and asked again how to get up to a platform and he flatly refused to give me directions and again said it was "too damned dangerous. . . not safe".
