To be honest I was a little bit disappointed as there was not too much information about the actual procedures and communications at uncontrolled airports. I was expecting some information about standard pattern procedures, inbound calls, typical circuit joining points and angles, communication that is different to controlled airports (why airport name is always mentioned at the beginning and end of each comm), comms when clear of runway, entering it, rolling, airborne and departing pattern, typical things to looks for, tips how to keep track of positions of other airplanes. Instead there was just a vague departure with a single call... :-( I am big fan of the channel and I find other videos very useful and detailed, this is why I was surprised that this one did not follow the same level of granularity. And the topic is very interesting - I found a lot of useful tips from US vids about it and in Australia there are a lot of uncontrolled airports so it would be great for pilots to improve their communication skills which are even more crucial in such situation (no ATC to correct them or get missing info). Keep up the good job mate and I hope to meet you at some fly in.

Hey SydneyAviator, sorry to hear you didn’t find that video useful. We’re obviously trying to cover a variety of topics in our way and I’m sure from time to time that’s not going to please everyone. However the purpose of this video was more of an introduction to some basic principles of flying in a CTAF and to give some basic radio calls as examples. Rather than a full and complete “guide to CTAFs”. My intention with these videos is to share the experience rather than solely be a step by step tutorial, but I really appreciate the feedback and always love to hear how viewers of this channel would like things to improve. So thanks again for leaving that comment. Cheers mate, stef 👍

@@StefanDrury I get that it is a lot harder to do a how to video. You want to just shoot and publish rather than put together a lesson. That is a lot more work. it could be a weeks worth of work compared to this video which would have been say 2 hours worth of work. No one is going to judge you for that. But then you should just Say "CTAF Vlog" rather than "CTAF procedures" Which actually sounds like a guide to CTAFs. There were no procedures here. Just some nice to know practices. That was SydneyAviators point.

Most of my flying before I parked my plane at Canberra was CTAF stuff. I would like to add a tip please - when transmitting your intentions on CTAF, don't try and get as much information out there in record time, and speak loud and clear. I hate it when pilots mumble through their calls, or their voices peter our all together towards the end of the transmissions - you might think you sound like the world's coolest pilot, but if you're not getting your message understood, you're dangerous.

I know this a CTAF video but trying to figure out the mumble mouth controllers who think speed is more important than clarity is part of the cooler-than-you mentality too.

Indeed! Anyone who pushes the transmit button needs to be understood the first time. Cheers.

I also want to add, if I hear anyone say "traffic rrrrrrr cirrus rrrrrrr, rolling 'rrrrrrrr' " please have the number for the local bus company handy because your right to fly is gone!

If you are flying a faster aircraft such as the Cirrus, you need to be mindful of slower (perhaps much slower) aircraft such as ultralights and microlights.

The referenced advisory in the video is CAAP 166-1 Operations in the vicinity of non-controlled aerodromes.

Great vid Stef. I fly at an uncontrolled ALA that gets quite busy sometimes and it always bemused me as to how many itinerants that fly in either don’t do the ‘right’ calls or do way too many - e.g. tx every leg of the circuit and then another 50x calls on the ground. It’s important to remember that if it’s a busy CTAF you potentially over-transmitting others doesn’t necessarily help anyone’s situational awareness!

I'm trying to understand the difference between ctaf and unicom. Sometimes it seems they different acronyms for the same thing.

I gave you a like for that retro intro music alone. I feel like I'm back in the 60's and 70's which is odd as I wasn't born until the 80's.

As professional as the thumbnail and the video looks, I'm quite disappointed that the video didn't contain any meaningful information I could take away from this. It's as meaningless as the tutorials of Elite Dangerous.

This was a huge disappointment! They drive you crazy until they pay up and they try to drive the price down and play games with you. and it takes many phone calls and emails to actually get your money. Never again!

1. Safety don’t piss off someone in a loaded fighter plane or just do it if you want to be shot down. 2. Just bring a loaded fighter plane instead if you want to break rules and shoot down a lot of enemies that are telling you to divert the airspace and never talk to any other aircraft in the area during each process. 3. Safety is propaganda and lies.
