Reminds me of a time long ago in 1972 when I had a 1965 VW Karmann Ghia, great car, many good memories. The engine had a problem with the #3 cylinder, like many other VW engines, since that cylinder got all the extra heat from the oil cooler (hottest cylinder) so I rebuilt the engine. Decided to install the big bore kit (83mm up from 76mm??) while performing the rebuilt. This was my first time rebuilding an air cooled VW engine. The engine was fun to work on as it was before all the anti-pollution hardware hampered working on the air-cooled engines. Pulled the engine out (4 bolts) of the car in short time and put on stand for rebuilt. After measuring the rod clearance on the crank (it was not the best) decided to go nuts and spend the money on a roller-crank. Rebuilt/ported the heads, trimmed the flywheel, added Porsche comp diaphragm clutch, added Porsche oil cooler, mechanical distributor and swapped the old Solex carb for a 2-barrel Holley, That car was really fun to work on and after bead-blasting the engine it looked like new. I enjoyed your video. It reminded me of all the fun that these simple little engines brought the people that worked on them. Thanks for bring me back to 1972, when everything was so much simpler and easier to take apart and fix.

CT, thanks for posting this. I have a 40 hp rebuild that stalled so long, it could have gone to law school ! I started teardown on a 1978 bus motor after watching your 914 engine tear down (last week)...and yesterday I hired a guy who cleaned the points, filled the float bowl with gas, cleaned up a few connections, and the 66 westy poptop started, first time for me, ever. @lionreb4 жыл бұрын
It is interesting and encouraging because you are starting with an engine that was actually started before this teardown. So whatever you see here that needs attention did not stop this thing from running. However, given what we are seeing, there is no question that the teardown was needed and will make the engine much more reliable and "known" .

Can't express enough how important valve guides, seats and the overall seal are to an engine. As a younger man I chased lost power and the perfect running engine by having the bottom end rebuilt a few times, never got what I expected. An older guy at the machine shop asked why I was having so many rebuilds and if it was the same motor, I told him it was and he told me 99% of the time lost power and lumpy runners are down to worn guides, valve stems or worn seats. He did the work at cost and the engine was a different beast, great video and Darrin knows the score like the old guy who sent me in the right direction 25 years ago.

I was an engine builder, specialized in work on VW, mostly air-cooled (counted 600 overhauls, then quit counting...) I think this was a good job. Nice clean working environment, organized, great lighting, too. These guys, to be fair, are not the VW mechanics of fifty years ago. They look slow; no end of wasted motion....but I did too, at first. The best I ever saw was Bobby Davis, Gainesville, FL. He consistently removed, installed and overhauled type one and two engines in one day: including cleaning, painting, machine work, repair of carburator and distributor, line bore crankcase and machine for Keenserts (best head stud inserts, no longer available) , new exhaust valves, guides and valve job, re-ring or replace jugs, thread repair, new weatherstrip in the engine compartment, clutch throw-out bearing, motor mounts.... His engines fired up immediately and ran just about right, needing very little tune up. At six hundred miles they got a free valve adjustment...nobody was faster than Bobby.

When I rebuilt these engines I always threw away the exhaust valves and put new ones in. Reason? I was building hi-perf engines many times and saw too many of the exhaust valves literally "lose their heads" due to the heat and separation from the stem. Valves are cheap; engines are not! Also used either 3M weatherstrip adhesive(affectionately called "gorilla snot") or Yamaha case-mating compound to mate the VW crankcases. Both make a cleaner-looking case in the end. Each to their own. I am also a believer in helicoils for the cylinder stud holes especially. I've seen countless engine "pull a stud" when they get hot and then it is impossible to hold torque on the heads. Result? Blow-by at the head will erode the combustion chamber perimeter and you need to pull the heads, mill the chamber perimeters and cc the combustion chambers.....even stock 40 horses will do this.

Speedcraft has changed hand 4 times, I was there for the 1rst and 2nd owners and left on the 3rd, All the aircooled tools and stuff was junked by the 3rd owner, the place had changed dramatically, all my mentors had left, the new owners didn’t care about the aircooled history, they were all business to sell new VW’s. They opened in 1956 in Wakefield RI, they moved 3 times the last time in 1960 to the location they are at now

Always replace the ex valves, prob the guides too. Line bore the block for new main brgs .25 inside under, .50 outside over with a 1.00 mm thicker flange. Lived and breathed these suckers for 14 years.

Nice video. Notice that they put the case halves together and forgot the cam? Happens to the best of us! This spring I put the engine in my altered and went to bolt up the torque converter and...no flex plate! Out came the engine. :-)
