Hi Paul. You may have just changed my husband’s life! He had his gall bladder removed 20 years ago and has suffered with loose bowel motions ever since, which have got much worse as he gets older. He is really suffering now, mentally and physically and has stopped wanting to go out because of the toilet problems. No doctor has ever suggested he may be suffering from bile malabsorption issues but now it makes sense to me. Going to speak to our GP and ask to try one of the meds you suggested, we’re in the UK. He also has high cholesterol so we could kill two birds with one stone! What a great educator you are, thank you. 🇬🇧😀😀

Yep. He almost certainly has BAM - Bile Acid Malabsorption. His large bowel is getting irritated with too much bile acid, and is flooding his bowel with water, which comes out as diarrhoea. Research it online, and then ask your doctor some well researched questions. I'm so pleased. Please do write again and tell me how you went. Paul.

Hi Francine! I've been suffering by the same thing as your husband. Please research the SeHCAT test that hospitals can use to check for bile acid malabsorption. I'm having this test done this summer. But it's also possible to use BAS-medicine, like Questran, without having the test done in advance. It's no harm in using it without the test done.

Paul, you seem much healthier now than before you had surgery. I know you'll get through it, no problem. Paul, I want to thank you for the wealth of information you gave. I'm 70 and have never been able to enjoy a meal in a restaurant. I'll go to be with my family and friends, but don't dare eat. Been using Lomotil for 40-50 years, mild to no help. BECAUSE OF YOU. I now have the information to go to my doc and say " I am going to try this". What a dream it would be to eat a meal with my family and friends. Thank you, thank you!

Paul, you shouldn't listen to all those people. Trust in your doctor. I know a lot of.people who have had successful stoma reversals. I think this will only depress you. I use to work on a.colorectal unit at a hospital, and we had great doctors. I'm not a nurse, put I witnessed a lot of success stories. I think if you want information, you should speak to your doctors in Sydney. Just my opinion. I wish only the best for you. My prayers are with you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I had my colostomy reversed. I did not have those types of issues. For me there was no choice it was very traumatizing to see my own intestine. I needed it done. I love not looking at my abdomen anymore. Any issues I had were because of the hard core antibiotics that I was on for my first surgery. That might happen to you because didn’t you have an infection? When they say it takes two years to rebuild the biome they are right. That being said probiotics helped me soooo much. Your surgeon would be the best person to talk to for a guess about how you will respond. But I love that my colostomy is gone. You will learn how to manage and your body adjusts. I don’t regret reversing my stoma.

Hi Paul, I’ve got to say I love watching and listening to your videos, whether they be of Mazda repairs, or, and especially, the ones like this that are so educational. Back when I was doing my nursing training, we had an amazing tutor who encouraged steering clear of medical jargon, in the interest of being able to relay information to clients/patients, in a fashion THEY could comprehend. He’d have loved your approach! I admire and respect that you do your own research, in relation to your own care plan, everyone in their individuality will investigate to a greater or lesser extent, and more knowledge is more power! I remember when your peripheral neuropathy was such a burden to you, and you never gave up trying, and thankfully succeeding, in finding a way, YOUR individual way, through your research, to manage it to an acceptable level, for your quality of life. I'm a nurse who's had part of her large intestine remove for divert, took you diverticulitis and I ended up with what I called poop soup, which the Doctor told me. I may have forever never suggesting any type of medications to take. To assist with that problem Fortunately for me it's a rare occasion now. Paul, I very much enjoy the educational videos that you put out. I enjoy all your videos, but I love learning. Your explanation about the digestive system and why the meds work was very informative. My mother had a condition called gastroparesis, which both myself and my sister also now have. In short it is a slowing down of the digestive processes which causes constipation and then bouts of intense diarrhea. I, therefore, am always searching for any information that might be helpful with that. Even though the issue you are addressing is different, there are some similarities. And, just learning the basics of how the digestive system works is very helpful. So, keep making this type of content. You truly are a wonderful teacher.

It's because you need to have an empty stomach when you go into surgery. So you are 'nil by mouth' from the night before the operation. After the operation I will be 'nil by mouth' for at least a further 48 hours to let my bowels heal. Nil by mouth means no tablets. My meds are tablets. Paul.

Nine years ago my GP advised me to take loperimide (Gastro-Stop) for my chronic diarrhoea but that only worked for a period of 24-48 hours. So three months ago my colorectal surgeon prescribed colestyramine (Questran Lite) which has changed me from being a 5-times-man to a 1 to 2-times-man.

So good that you are informed and able to think actively about the care plan, and to communicate with your doctors About the negative experiences that people wrote to you - we don't know their full stories. There are so many individual factors. Your doctors in Sydney have well-substantiated arguments that make you a good candidate for reversal (emphasis on "you")

Mate, this was fascinating. I’ve had IBS for years and tried lots of things and and spoken to lots of people. I don’t know why this thing about bile acid has never been mentioned though. I’ll tryn reduce the fat a bit more in my diet but will definitely ask my gp about cholestagel. You’re great at explaining things mate. Thanks a lot! 👍🏻

My partner has had 2 very good outcomes with Dr Makin @ Murdoch. 1 was stoma reversal which went excellent, we were glad to be rid of it! and then second was bilateral inguinal herniation after a fall responding to a hospital emergency (We are both RNs). Drs here wont recommend the reversal if they think the outcome will be compromised, go for it if your surgeon gives the green light.

My 83 yr old mother had her colostomy reversed 6 months after initially having to get it. She is doing great!!!!! She's so happy she did it.

Paul this was a fantastic vlog. I am certain that you are going to help tons of people with your research and explanations. Well done you! I had never had tummy issues until 2 years ago when suddenly I started having chronic diarrhea, sometimes without warning. I became housebound until the afternoon when the diarrhea finally abated. I had no cramps oddly. Long story short, I saw a gastroenterologist who diagnosed me with ‘functional diarrhea’. She prescribed me Colestipol Hydrochloride tablets, 1 gram. I usually take 2 tabs morning and night. I can take up to 6 daily. Absolutely no side effects and boy oh boy they have been a life changer for me. I had my gall bladder removed almost 30 years ago, so I found your comments about how that can affect the workings very interesting. Paul I am in the USA so this med is available here too. Once again thank you for caring and I am totally rooting for you! Your expat mate, Robbie ❤

Thank you for the information. My elderly mother has suffered with diverticulitis for years and it has gotten worse as she gets older. I am going to see what her doctor says about the medication because I definitely think this is well worth investigating for her!

Have her check out oregano oil. Taken in a capsule, it knocks out the bowel infection and pain.

Have had a stoma since 2016. Will have it for life. Am quite used to it now, I call him Stanley. Needed it due to colon cancer. Also have permanent catheter. I have heard reversals can be pretty rough but your body does need time to readjust. All the best Paul you look well and a very informative video 👍

I wish I could say that I got used to my stoma, and it didn't stop me doing anything. But I haven't completely gotten used to it, and I do hold back on activities in order to stay close to my bathroom. I feel like a reversal is going to be good for me in the long run.
