Cub Cadet 44A Mower Deck Service

This video was perfect. I took my 44A mower apart to repaint and was having problems remembering how the spindles went back together on the deck.

ccspecialties.org Not sure if Charlie Proctor (owner of that business) is still selling them. The 782 ( all the 82 series, actually) use 5/8 inch belts and a 50C deck. The earlier series all use a 3/8 inch belt and the 50A deck. The only thing different between the decks is the pulley size though, and you can convert one deck to the other by changing the pulley from one size to the other. Also, I'm pretty sure the blade speed is higher on the 82 series than earlier series anyway, so a speed up pulley may not be needed? (may not even be available, actually, as it was a 50A deck mod I think)

@@woodandmetalshoptime8048 Thank you for taking the time to respond Frank. I just got my 782 "84" yesterday. The mower deck seems to work although I think it can use some tuning up of course. I ran it around the yard and ran out of gas! I was too excited to check. This morning I was surprised by the smell of gas. Gas was dripping quite a bit at the stem coming out of the bottom of the tank . First order of business in my Cub Cadet journey is learning about gas tanks and fuel lines It will be fun. Thank you for the belt number when you change the pulley to a speed up pulley. Do you still run the same length pto to deck belt when you change to the speed up pulley?

Can i put a 50" deck off a 782 onto my 149

yes, but the belt sizes are different. The 782 uses a 5/8 inch belt and the 149 uses a 3/8 inch belt. Replace the mower deck center pulley with a 3/8 inch pulley. The mule drive and the support frame from the 782 should work on the 149. Go to ccspecialties.org to get the replacement pulley. The only difference between the 50A (for the 149) and the 50C (for the 82 series) is the main pulley size.

@woodandmetalshoptime8048 ok thanks man appreciate it, so get the mule drive for the 50" deck off the 782 and will go right onto my 149, and center pulley can I take the center pulley off the 50% deck off my 149 and put it on the 50" deck from 782 deck

I would think so. If you already have a 50A deck on the 149, the mule drive and support frame will work with the 50C deck from the 782. The decks are identical except for that pulley. I've done exactly the same swap only I put a 50C on my 1450.

i just got an 149. and also came across a 50c deck. think its possibe to change the spindle to a 3/8" and run 50c deck?

Just change the center pulley. I've done exact thing and am using a 50C on my 1450. ccspecialties.org probably has the pulley. You do need the arched support frame (rather than the straight frame for the triangle decks}, and the mule drive with the tilted idler pulleys. The 50c (and 44) have the center pulley off center, so the belt needs to be directed off to the side a bit. The triangle decks have a center pulley that is centered on the tractor frame.

@@woodandmetalshoptime8048 this is great news! I'm pretty sure I have the large curved carriage for the deck. As far as the mule drive I took a shot in the dark and just bought a wide frame one. Wish me luck!

A wide frame mule drive may or may not work...Some WFs came with the 44/50A decks but most came with the triangle decks. Most Quiet Lines had the newer 44/50A decks. A QL mule drive is more likely to have the tilted idler pulleys.

The grease zerks are press-in types. One of mine is snapped off. Is there a way to replace them because all I can find are the modern screw in hex-head types. Can the old zerk hole be tapped and threaded?

Well the thumbnail says 44A, and the video title says 44A. So I'd guess it's a 44A. Deck and PTO belts are available at ccspecialties.org. You need 954-3004 for the deck spindles and the PTO belt varies by tractor. What tractor are you putting the deck on? BTW, don't try to use 1/2 inch belts from some other source, the IH belts are actually 3/8 inch. 1/2 inch belts will roll right out of the pulleys.

I'm looking at a 60" deck for my 127. I plan on using it on my 105 also and possibly a 102. Do I need to also locate the mule drive to match the deck?

You can't run a 60 inch deck on any of those tractors. Max size for those tractors is the 48 inch. Starting with the 108/128/129/149 you can run a 50 inch deck, max.

@@woodandmetalshoptime8048 hello.. 1976 1250 with 44a. Found the pulley. My current pulley is 4.5 outer diameter I assume is original is that correct. Is this 4" outer diameter? It costs $170 now with shipping compared to $50 is it worth it ??? Thanks so much
