I had the same thought process when I lived in Ft. Walton Beach, up in the Panhandle, and I found suddenly I was hitting those big Black Drums with tiny Rapalas on a tide change under a bridge, and that changed my theory of hook size. I was suddenly catching those rascals rather than getting a hit rather than wondering what that little nibble was. Go figure, we have so much to learn, no matter how long we have been fishing. I now live in Arkansas but I miss the Gulf and just might make a move next spring. And you can blame yourself for tempting me to make that move. Again, I appreciate all you are doing, teaching how to use film and showing us your triumphs and failures at the same time. I really enjoy your work. All I can say is, I thank God your didn't get into golfing because them I would never have heard of you! Patch

Nice video clip. Cuban Yo-Yo's have there many uses. Great for catching live bait around pilings. Some guys even target tarpon here in South Florida. When I fish inshore, sometimes as I work the top water lures, I may drop down some bait on the Yo-Yo. So long as you are anchored, you don't have to worry about getting stuck in the bottom. Keep up the great work.

hahaha nice day! I'm Cuban and only recently I started using a fishing pole. My father taught me to use the yoyo since I was young. when you have a fish on, you have to pull the fish in by the line without the yoyo. so it can get messy with line everywhere! you have to put the yoyo somewhere like a pole through the middle to where the fish won't take your whole setup. tight lines bud! like your videos!

I like the out riggers on your kayak,they loom like they work well and they look like you made them ,nice job. I fish with a hand line( cuban) out of my float tube for redear,and bluegill it works well. Try fishing with the line in your hand,the spool is just a line holder. You mite want too put a couple of pieces of tape on the fingers you hold the line with. If you hit a big fish you will know why.

Haven't seen you sport the yoyo recently, man. They are really addicting because you really do feel that fish fight and the challenge of catching big fish with one without breaking the line is tricky. Especially on a kayak. Had a big jack or something today using mine on 30lb line and I almost had him to the boat but he went under, caught me off guard and snapped the line. I'm sure the boat next to mine heard me cussing up a storm after that. :)

Hi, You don't have to hold the hand reel after your first cast, instead you tie it off somewhere to secure it from dropping into the water. When you got a fish or want to re-bait, you just have to pull the line back and throw it to the other side of your boat till you got your fish or sinker. When you throw your line to the other side of your boat, (instead of inside your boat) your line will not tangle or bird nest inside your boat. When it is done you just have to cast out your line again without having to hold your hand reel again and releasing line from it. (Of course you will need to pull out some extra line on your first cast as different are got different depth) Hope that helps. I like your Kayak, well organize. Good.

Always wanted to try one of those. I would think setting the hook would really be the only drawback. Maybe a huge fish would be a bear to pull up? I saw that thing on your last video and was going to ask about it. Should have known you would do a vid about it! Haha

Here in Honduras we use a piece of pvc tube and put some line in the tube and I get a lot of fish with that. It is very simple, for to use a hand line you must have the line in your all the time, because with that you're feel if the fish is eating the bait and take it out for dinner hahaha. That is the way to fish with hand line. ☺

Once again I am very pleased to watch one of your videos. I love your commentary by the way. This video was a big help for me. The Wal-Mart where I live sells these Tiny little rod n reel combos for 10 bucks but I never really saw a reason to pick one up other than the obvious "I can take it anywhere!" deal. I live on Marina in South Florida and the Sheepshead population is enormous! Only problem is I can never seem to catch one. Believe it or not, neither one of the two Bait n Tackle shops around here carries Crabs. (The good kind ;) ) Anyways, u have given me a good reason to pick up one of those tiny combos so thanks again. Please keep making your videos dude. They r the best!!! Later!!

I'd love to see you do an updated version of this trying to do some distance casting with different lures and see what you actually catch. I'm getting one myself soon for the upcoming trout season to throw out a powerbait trot line as I cast spoons'n'spinners, but I don't plan on using it only for that especially when I travel so I'm really curious how well it works beyond just drop/bottom-baiting.

It looks like those "angel fish" are actually Spadefish (Chaetoditerus faber). They are pretty dang good eating and we usually catch them over wreck/reefs just offshore and occasionally around jetties/pilings. Sometimes we use cannonball jellyfish(which is a large part of their diet) on a stringer to bring them up to the boat but tossing some chopped up shrimp works fine too. Oh yeah and they put up quite a fight for their size. I've been living vicariously through your videos until I can get back out on the water, so thanks for keeping me sane.
@zoffinger10 жыл бұрын
Cool info on the spadefish. Maybe next time I'll try to hook a couple. But they're sneakier than the Sheepshead! I'll need to use tiny hooks for them I suppose and I'll really need to pay attention. Thanks for writing.

Hey soffinger! nice videos! I try to watch as many as possible on my free time. Just a quick suggestion, I have used this cuban yoyos before and once you tossed the line you let go of the yoyo on the floor and just hold on to the line and reel in the line with both hands. You never have to hold the yoyo again once you toss it once because you already measured how much line you need to cast from the first cast. The line piles up on the floor as you reel it in and then when you just need to toss it out again all the line is free to go. The yoyo just holds the line, it's not the reel. Think of it as a fly fishing reel, how you reel in with your hands. Anyway, tight lines buddy.

i'd stick a half inch wood dowel rod in the middle and screw it into the cuban yoyo and turn it into a vietnamese fishing reel... you can hold onto the wood dowel and reel it up or cast it out with a good grip on your reel... we usually make it out of pvc pipes and chopsticks... and another thing is... i think those are spade fish not angels

I have seen people use a tin can opened on both ends, a can large enough to put your hand inside and sorta make a fist, keeps it attached without any trouble. Anyway they would wind up that bait like throwing a bolo and let fly…the other hand just points in the direction your tackle went and the line peels off like a spinning reel. the one hand holds the line and the other does the hula-hoop move to reel it back in…pretty ingenious I thought. charlie

Guys if you are going to fish with a Cuban yoyo you're better off using bicycle tire tubes, if you have an old ten speed or thin tire tube which you have lying around your garage or shed, cut them at least inch and a half (1 1/2") in length, and slide them on your index fingers, let me tell you, you won't go wrong, I fish amber jacks with them and 100 pound test mono, they do the job, once you learn how to use the Cuban Yo-Yo you're hooked, make sure you monitor the amount of fishing line that you retrieve and have accumulated on the floor, you don't want it to tangle on you, try stretching your lines while heading to your fishing hole, that will eliminate most of the web tangling problems.

i usually keep 2 yoyos, one w. strong line( 20lbs and up) and one(or a bottle or something like that) w. light line(12 lbs and down. the big one is for large live or dead baits, float or lead optional, and i set the hook when it feels like i have a dog on a leash, lol! the other one i use w. small hooks ( tandem optional but a good idea) with hooks adjusted to size of fish i'm going after and the bait i'll use.....and the weight on the bottom, w. tight lines at all times....to catch bait or smaller pan fish. a warning to the wise, never wrap line around fingers....bad idea! also if you are fishing from a small craft, like a kayak or canoe....and you are not exactly sure of what you are doing...keep the leader light! better a snapped leader, than you getting pulled into the drink, or capsizing...sounds like a bunch of crap to some people, but it happens!

Change to a higher poundage line, if u catsh big fish it's better to wear gloves, can't just fit line in all the way... From what I see the yoyo have a gap at the side to grip unlike normal hardline. hold the side of the yoyo to let it glide. logically bro If u were to release the line from the side there are chances of bursting the line at a sudden jerk if the line is thin and if its a big fish .they should make it wooden alsi so it floats on water... using handlines are great in pulling groupers... it's just u the line and the fish a test of skills.

Good tip, William! My question is; There must be a way to apply 'drag' when the bigger fish run. Is the whole spool supposed to spin over your palm? I feel in this video when the reel got yanked into the water, that would've been the time when my spinning reel would've let some line out. I can't wrap my head around how a hand line is supposed to simulate drag. It must be possible though. I know folks catch monsters with hand lines.
@williamperezz372410 жыл бұрын
heres how you do it, your not suppose to keep the yoyo with all its line on it, your suppose to let it out in a neat pile(so u dont get tangles) and let out line with pressure yourself by hand. when spooling your yoyo your gonna wanna use mono, no braid, and heavy mono too. Locals on bridges and such here use about 60-100 pound line just to catch 12 inch snappers. like that you can apply alot more pressure without worrying of the fish breaking off. but for catching sheeps heads and stuff anything works really.

zoffinger Hey Zoff,if u need a short intensive course to learn how use a cuban yoyo,i can show u how. Im a cuban fisherman with plenty experience on that tecnics. We call it CARRETE,and i got a huge collections of them,all line diameters and just two carretes size. Just througt away the line and put the "yoyo" on kayak floor. Them take a line over your hand and grab it with finger tops ,slowly and gently. U'll feel the bite and how the fish runn,taking out the line from you fingers and ZAZ,hook it and take it up. Never use only one hand with this tecnic and use small line diameter 12 or 15 lbs,pink,clear blue or green camo. Good Lock
