David, Coming from an old fart who's gotten board with most everything done, I have to say what sets your music and production so apart from the rest of the world is first of all, the way you use your harmonies, rhythm, and space. But you having the courage to being able to share these production details is quite a gift to the public. I have a lot of respect for you bud and wish you years of success and perseverance without burnout. Keep up the inspirations!

@WinterhouseRecords4 жыл бұрын
@@VMac3 a screen capture software would be able to do that - and you could take the footage and sync it up later in the editing. You could use something like OBS, which is free. If you're wondering how he actually brings the screen in at that particular angle, it's surely in the video editing software he uses (I think he uses Final Cut, but this could theoretically be done in most major editing softwares like Premiere, Sony Vegas, etc.)

Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm in love with the song, and it's awesome to see your process behind the scenes. As much as you aren't a fan of the guitar tone, I think the "fake" sound is part of what makes the track - it has that real industrial vibe to it. I love the true tones that BIAS provides, but they would have been out of place. This song is dirty, gritty and aggressive and it's amazing. I'd love to see more of this kind of thing from you, as I'm a massive fan of not only the music you create, but your production style as well. Thanks again for sharing!

Awesome effort, David! Here's a quick production tip since you mentioned you didn't have a de-esser in the stock plugins. But you did - a de-esser is basically an EQ in front of a compressor, which heavily emphasizes the "s" frequencies that the compressor then tones down depending on how you set the ratio. Might as well use a multiband compressor to focus just on that particular "s" band of frequencies. Simples!

Great stuff, learned a lot. I guess I've not been paying enough attention to automation as it seems ... maybe part of the reason why my mixes always sound not very dynamic. Just one final question: did you really not process the guitars at all? Or did you decide to not go into detail for all the EQing?

You really have a knack for making a casual video like this! :D However there's one important question I'd like to ask. I noticed in Bilo 3 the overall loudness of the songs is a bit less than Eco or Ego. How do you get your mix to be as loud as the songs in Eco and Ego? I always have difficulty with volumes when mixing/mastering. I put limiter and compressor to maximize the volume and it helps, but it's still not as loud as your song can get. Thanks David!
@RobertBruckmayer8 жыл бұрын
It's not about loudness but about the song mostly and details :)
@DavidMaximMicic8 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response man :) A lot of it comes down to gain staging I think... and I improved from BILO 3.0 a bit when it comes to mixing I think... altho the songs are a bit more loudness friendly on Ego and Eco... idk, many factors... but mainly gain staging :)
@aotq8 жыл бұрын
David Maxim Micic Thanks! I'll look into it.

Plus, there's a bunch of free vst which may raise the volume of your master track in the mastering stage without inserting unecessary loudness into the mix so you'll avoid being the part of Loudness Wars :D

David thank you so much for Sharing the process of your work. I have a question though How do you make a sound to repeat it self many times? Sometimes is the piano or the guitar that has that repeating sound. It's like as you would have a sound bar and then you cut it in many pieces then when you play it sounds like the repeating effect... Like a loop. Hope you got what I'm trying to say :D
@DavidMaximMicic8 жыл бұрын
You asked the question and gave yourself the answer man hahah :D Exactly that... cutting audio files
@ikbenpablo8 жыл бұрын
Hahaha really?? For example in the full EP Bilo 3.0 in the song "Daydreamers" at 37:12 the piano sound has that effect of repeating it self very fast. I guess this is how it goes For instance I record an acoustic guitar with a mic, then export the audio file, open it again and start cutting? Is that it? Man... Then how many times do you cut an audio file to make that effect. Thank you so much for answering man I really appreciate it :D

This is probably a rookie mixing question, so I apologize up front if this is something I should know, but to all of the mixing guru's in these comments: I notice that when David's EQ window is open that he dials down in some areas far past the 'middle EQ line'. As I've been mixing my own stuff, I tend to boost the frequencies rather than take away from them (meaning I start at the line and raise the points). I am aware of 'low-cut' EQ for guitar, where the idea is to drop a good amount of the lower frequencies to make the higher more distinctive, but David's choices here have me puzzled. The Kick EQ window in particular is shocking to me because he boosts nothing at all and only lowers his frequencies with some being more drastic than others. He really kills the mids while striking the extreme highs. Would it be more beneficial to the mix impact to raise the deeper and higher low hz levels rather than lowering the frequencies around them? Is this a common approach to the mixing process, or is this simply what David has to do to make the drumset plug-in and recording interface sound 'good'? Should I start lowering my frequencies rather than raising them? Does this create a more natural equalization within the mix for the instruments? To clarify, I ask this because when I read up on 'EQ' mixing, especially in regards to making an instrument clearer in the mix, the general vibe I get is to boost the instrument to a specific hz range to make it more distinct, while raising levels to taste. But that doesn't seem to be working for me very well. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's just links to random articles.
@DavidMaximMicic8 жыл бұрын
This is a pretty complex theme to clarify in a YT comment I believe... To be completely honest, most of the time I don't really know why I'm doing what I'm doing... and to some degree I don't even want to know hahah.. I'm all for using my ears as much as I can then just using some mixing tricks only because I know them. When it comes to EQing... I find it easier to clean up what I don't need and that way boost whatever I feel like it's missing in my ears. If I cut down some of the low mid frequencies I'm giving more space to upper mid frequencies (and vise versa)... of course, when recording of something or a sample of something is good and healthy sounding, I find it easy to pop up whatever it is I feel like I need to pop up on my EQ... but at the same time, the better the sample/recording the less moves you're going to make anyway :) And... to make it clear, I haven't finished any schools for this, I just do what I feel like doing and that's all there is, so do get any advice that I give with a grain of salt :)
@adrianwehunt80338 жыл бұрын
Thanks for clarifying. It does make a lot of sense to remove what you don't want to hear rather than boost what you do want in terms of frequency. I just never really thought of it that way. But I have to say, regardless of whatever "school" or credit that you feel you lack, for me, and likely many, many others, your musical accomplishments are trully phenomenal. Your works, in pretty much every aspect, from composition, to recording, to mixing and onward, is the goal for us; the peak of the mountain we all climb and reach for. There is no music quite like David Maxim Micic music So I think I will keep the salt far, far away from your advice :-) Now, if you will excuse me, I have to take a moment to fan-girl over the fact that this conversation actually happened. Ha-ha!
@stevencorry57907 жыл бұрын
Always best to take away what you don't need,rather than boost what you do.When you start boosting,levels increase,which means you then have to increase levels of other instruments...which means their imperfections may show up.For example,if you are trying to get bass and guitar sounding good together,but the low end seems muddy,instead of boosting guitars mids or higher end to make things sound brighter,you maybe have to remove lows from guitar to make the bass more pronounced so they aren't fighting with each other.Just remember each instrument has it's intended frequency range.And like David says...it can get pretty complex,but I have always heard that it's best to take away instead of having to keep adding.
