It's all in the tires people. Look at how bouyant those tundra tires are! If you tried this with stock wheels, you'd be on the lake bottom very quickly. Couple the tires with skill and bravery, and this is the result. Badass video CubDriver!

I love the bigfoot tyres and the simple shape of the plane.

That guy has cojones the size basketballs--also it just goes to show that the Cub is about the most forgiving aircraft ever built!!!

From the GotBush? website discussing the video: "Note how he keeps it on the water to bleed speed, and stalls 5 feet from shore.. LOL Watch it a few times, you will see that at last second, he is done. Thank goodness for beach, Eyes on Airspeed and incredible foresight and timing. If that threshold (speed/lift vs. Wheels on water) were to happen 3 or even 1 seconds earlier, that cub would be in 10 feet of water and he would be swimming out."

How do you determine where it is safe to land and where it isn't in extreme cases? I'm sure at some point intuition and years of experience help make the decision, but are there any more qualitative measurements while you are flying over the area that you are deciding on?

@BushRaven yes you can with enough ground speed over the water it is possible.

You can use the water again for takeoff. He says himself he never lands unless he can takeoff, and its a safe spot to land.

You guy's may criticize the way he treats his airplane, but remember that he is a bush pilot and in the bush there aren't many airports, also how else is he supposed to land on that beach.
@VladAndreis15 жыл бұрын
Think of airplanes flying through rain. The engine sucks up a lot of rain water. The engine would only hydrolock if there is water in the cylinders. Since it is a relatively sealed system, outside water wouldn't cause this to happen.

So you are telling me land my cessna 172 in a lake and i will float safely to the shore

Strange.......sounds like the brakes were wet.
@itsumonihon15 жыл бұрын
better idea is to buy a share in a cessna for 4,000 or 5,000 then sell the share when you're done. but you'll never afford a cub for 25,000. the super cubs sell for over 100,000. also remember cubs have to be maintained by certified mechanics and anyone selling a cub will probably be doing it when it needs a 10,000$ engine overhaul. experimental aircraft are the way to go!

It's all about the liability. An airplane will go down because of pilot error, and then the surviving family will sue Piper, Bendix, Continental, Hartzell and anybody else who they think will have deep pockets. Until these manufacturers don't have to worry about that, they will have to continue charging outrageous prices for their product, its the only way they can cover liability insurance.

Proooobably let that one get a little wet at the end, but nobody really gets to tell Loni how to fly because he makes the rules. ;)

I am a Bush pilot with many thousand hours in the same type of aircraft. Believe me if he needs the water to complete a landing he isn't likely to be taking off again. It is abuse on the aircraft and engine as super cooling oocurs from the water spray. Absolutely wouldn't do it in salt water.
