It still makes me smile that this whole movie was shot on ONE SET, with different lighting for each sub-cube. Astounding fore-thought on the production.

I read a great analysis on this film some years ago. It was in Spanish so I'll try to translate it. Apparently each character represents different philosophies: ⛓️ Rennes, the escapist, represents pragmatism. His death means the failure of this philosophy: to get out of the cube you need to speculate, think beyond what you have in front of you, but as a pragmatist he fails to do so. 👷 Worth, the architect, is nihilism. He has no reason to get out of the cube so he doesn't help. However, he is lucid, because he is the only one who understands the "meaning" of the cube. ‍🎓 Leaven, the math student, represents instrumental reason. He cracks the system's number puzzle but despises Kazan for being "retarded", since intelligence is cold and inhuman. 👩‍⚕️ Holloway, the doctor, represents humanism. She is the only one who cares about Kazan and manages to keep him from being abandoned. 👮 Quentin, the cop, represents volunteerism. At first, he acts as a positive leader of the group, reassuring, encouraging others and counting on them to make decisions, but little by little, he degenerates to end up being a dictator. 💡 Kazan, the autistic genius, is the only character who does not harbor evil and who does not intentionally try to save himself, although he is the only one who achieves it. Is has been said that the movie is like an inverted Platonic myth: those who see die inside the cave while the blind man escapes. Dunno if that means the failure of all philosophies, represented by the other characters, to offer us salvation. Guess that's for us to decide. Love the channel, keep it up guys!

I think 7 is a very fair rating and totally agree with the acting of the guy who played Quentin. he was very over the top for sure but I didn't mind as much because the rest of the actors were perfectly fine for me. I remember when I first saw this movie I was blown away by the plot and the concept, so much so that when I was able to own it I did so immediately. one thing I do want to point out though is that after multiple viewings, I'm totally fine with Kazan being the only person who makes it out because he's the only truly innocent one among them. even Holloway was pretty judgmental of others. anyway, great reaction Shaun. I actually own the trilogy of this and while Cube 2: Hypercube is not as good as this one, Cube Zero is just as good as this one and worth a watch imo. ❤️

@@indiatastic understandable. Baring in mind this was a student film, i try to overlook the acting. The plot and effects are really quite impressive when you take that into consideration. Apparently there was literally only one room and they simply redressed them and changed the colour cells.Also the effects were done by a special effects company for free. Later movies do reveal more about the Cube but im not entirely sure that can stand up to our own interpretation.
@krisbrown6692

Yeah, I agree. Truly independent films and student films definitely should get a pass on the acting. Half the time it's the film maker's friends and people trying to become actors.

It was also a Sci-Fi original movie when it originally was released. So it was an is a made-for-tv movie wich means not so much of a huge budget. So that means they could not hire actual people who have ever acted before. In any mager movie or TV so because I remember watching this movie the first time it ever aired on the Syfy channel its World premiere.

The thing about this movie is that the audience is questioning the reasons why did this happen, who did build this place.. There is this sense of mystery. All of them have different answers - aliens, rich people, nobody - the thing is that in the end it doesn't matter. They are meant to die and that's all that they gonna get. The light at end signifies the conclusion that they will never get. It actually kept me going the same way as Inception did at the end with the "is this real or not" moment. Quentin was over the top, even thou I felt every emotion he expressed. He was really scary at the end. Overall, I liked this movie very much, 8.7 for me
@Essenceofblood5238
@Essenceofblood5238 2 жыл бұрын
Umm, "nobody" is not an answer. This place did not just magically appear. Worth admitted to designing the external shell of the cube; that means, more than likely, another independent unit/department/company designed the sub-cubes. Moreover, we likely had another entity design, implement, and construct said cube & sub-cubes with all sorts of rigged mechanisms and weaponry. A REAL answer most definitely does matter because nobody would go through all the intricate trouble of building this elaborate structure and abducting all those people to drop into it for nothing! Even if that reason simply is a sadistic psychopath who's living out his humanized fantasy of metaphorical rats scurrying through a futile maze, it still brings a cohesive conclusion, be it a defeatist and unpleasant one. Please don't defend the weaker parts of this story just because the filmmakers didn't bother to secure the funds/resources to actually finish it.
@tintinbyherge

Having seen the movie. I Rate it 8. And why does it matter, that we know, within the movie, who built it and why.. you don't need to it's a mystery that keeps you going but because you don't find out the answer, it doesn't matter. It's called a McGuffin. Hitchcock used them all the time.

Actually, the third guy, David Hewlett, (who hit his head) was in "Stargate: Atlantis" (the series) as Dr. Rodney McKay from 2004 to 2009 with some guest spots playing the same character in "Stargate: SG1" (the series). His character is one of the only ones that has some growth during the series. There are a few others like Jason Momoa's character Ronin that also show some growth. I've also seen the dark headed girl and the kid that seems to be in shock or has a mental issue in some other b-horror movies.

BTW, interesting fact: There was an extended ending, but it's Lost Media. For what the few eyewitnesses says, it ends with Kazan (The autistic man) walking on a beach/cliff on a purple alien planet, just to see his footprints and the exit vanish. That's the version that some people says, because it looks like it was just projected at some theatrical releases, and there is a myth of a "special" DVD edition where if a candy wrap with the word "Alien" was there, there was the extended ending. Why do I say is a myth? Vincenzo Natali said that it was the first scene he cut and destroyed each copy. So, that scene is lost right now.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, this is one of the few films I remember the first time I saw it, I was blown away by the concept. This came out in probably the best period for cinema in the 90s. You should definitely give the 2nd one a watch it's got a bit more budget (not sure about the acting 😂) but it doesn't feel stale and builds on the groundwork of the first The 3rd one is OK 🤷‍♂️ You should give The Box starring Cameron Diaz a look It's a interesting slow burn sci-fi based on one of the best twilight zone stories

I love Cube. I even enjoy the sequel then prequel. The thing is dragged down a little by the horrible acting from Maurice Dean Wint (Quentin) and frustrating character of Dr Helen Holloway (played by Nicky Guadagni. The director has a few really good movies under his belt. Cypher was his next one and I was so looking forward to it. He made this with one room. Imagine what he could do with like 5 or 6 rooms. Cypher isn't as unique as it was when it first came out so it may seem familiar but it did a lot of things before they became staples of current film and TV pop culture. David Hewlett shows up in all his movies as they're friends. Hewlett is probably my favourite actor in this. He's not just from Stargate: Atlantis. The guy is a really good writer and director in his own right.

i think the life commentary is we've constructed this arbitrary system around ourselves that keeps us trapped, and hurts us, and it's now out of anyones control, and we're so busy trying to find meaning in this system that we fight and destroy each other in our attempts to survive it and find meaning for ourselves..and if you're just patient, let go, stop fighting it (by its rules) and each other, you can just bypass it and escape. and the character who does is the one who is least able to engage with society so less corrupted by its psychological cage.

I kind of think of it as the cube being the manifestation of modern bureaucracy to an extreme-the metaphorical machine we are all cogs in-and the way that machine grinds us down and turns some of us into monsters. In that way the cube is a kind of physical symbol or avatar for bureaucracy as an amorphous eldritch cosmic horror.

I listened to your intro. I stumbled on this movie a very long time ago. Me and a friend, not my girl friend or anything like that, but she was a girl and was one of my closest friends. If the whole group of our friends were not doing much me and Kirsty would come to my parents house where I had the smallest room in the house, we'd grab a lot of beers and we would lay on the bed watching trashy 'B' movies. It sounds crazy how 2 people of the opposite sex can be such good friends. I'm never going to cuddle up to one of my guy pals on my bed watching junk while getting drunk. lol. But that's just how we were... Even at other peoples weekend house parties they would always put me and her in the double bed. We came close a lot of times. passed out together and hands almost going places. But nothing ever happened. We were just really in love but not in that way. Apart from my wife she is the next person who I spent the most time sleeping with. That was a good 25 years ago. And right now at the age of 40 I have another version of her. Another really great lady friend who just wants to get really bolloxed and watch trash with me. Like I hinted at before it's much better snuggled on the sofa watching a movie with a girl than a guy. Well, depending on which side you're batting on. Sex just spoils everything. with the wife I'd be lying on the sofa in my boxer shorts, she'd come down from her shower wearing a large t-shirt and nothing else. We would be the lying on the sofa together her infront of me and she would ever so slightly keep moving every few minutes just so her arse cheeks were sandwiching my cock. Then sex happened and we'd we'd missed the second act of the film, and that's usually where the expo dump is. So now I've missed the plot of the movie and want pizza and and a nap... Fuck wives and GFs. They ruin everything. ;)

This is plenty of peoples introduction to Canadian films, while they shouldn't be free from criticism, they can be unfairly held up against Hollywood productions, they tried to give it a big go with 'The Colony' in 2013 but it didn't work out, it's always going to be better known for where the USA films it's TV shows for cheap or endless Christmas movies. In Maurice Dean Wint's defence he's a decent enough actor and has had a lengthy career even if you didn't rate him here. I'd give it an 8, I've seen it a few times since I first saw it's TV premiere on Channel 4 or Channel 5 around 1999ish and went out and bought it on VHS, later bought the trilogy DVD boxset when it came out, so lived with it a long time and am glad it is still appreciated as a cult movie. Thanks for watching it.

In the 80s and 90s a lot films of this type were made, with smaller budget, therefore with lesser known or experienced actors, but they made the most out of it with sets and practical or special effects. At most they had the opportunity to tell stories no big-budget production dared to take on, including the not-so-happy-ending. There can still be some jewels be found in a crapload of mediocre work from those times. Both Cube and The Platform are what I would call 'allegorical' SF. Nothing seen here makes sense in the real world, everyting works as a metaphor. And with Cube I like especially the idea that was also pointed out here, that the whole thing has no real purpose, it just exists for existing. As if some plans for an escape room videogame ended up in the pipeline of a military manufacturer who had some funds to use up and actually put it into practice … There's also a 'sequel', "Hypercube" (which feels more like a reboot) and a prequel, 'Cube Zero' which is kind of good, but might take away from the mystery by explaining a little too much.

There's a lot of exposition in Cube Zero but the twist ending makes the whole film worth a watch.

When it comes to the acting in this movie. You have to understands this movie was originally a Sci-Fi Channel original movie. So it is basically a made-for-tv movie which means it didn't have the budget to get professional actors. Wich is the case for all made for TV movies. Because I remember watching this movie when came out on the Syfy channel for very first time. Its World premiere basically so you have to give them. Credit for all the stuff that was done with the little budget they had. Basically in modern-day terms it was a channel exclusive movie. Until later on when it was released on some physical media.

If you can find it the original short that was made as a prototype pitch for investors called "Elevated" does the premise of the movie way better and is honestly worth a watch.

I skimmed the comments and didn't see anyone answer the question @ 17:02, where did Quentin get the murder weapon? It's one of those spinney, handle things they use to open the hatches. He pulled one off and then stabby, stabby. The acting of Quentin's actor didn't bother me, no one can know how they will react when put in a ridiculous life or death situation. Cops can also get off on flexing their authority and domination over other people, as we have seen demonstrated by the many recordings of abusive police officers of recent years in the US. You can look to something like the Algiers Motel incident dramatized in the movie _Detroit_ to see how absurd some cops can behave if they get wound up. Similarly Quentin just seems to crack in this high pressure situation in which he has lost control and lashes out.

Love this movie, terrible underrated. Not only the performances, but also the practical effects. Glad you watched this Omg, thanks for the for the heart, dude. I tried to left comments every time but my english it's not the best. Fun fact about this movie, minor cgi usage (only used in a few scenes), and same for the set. Vincenzo Natali (the director) shot this in only twenty days, mostly cause the set contained just one cube that only needed to change colors.

I'll say again anyone expecting good acting from about 99% of horror/horror-like films doesn't really know the genre you don't watch such films for the quality or subtlety of the performances most of the cast are going to die (some quite early on)🎩

I dont think thats fair. Acting is what sells horror films. If you dont believe the characters are afraid then the movie suffers. This movie is so well written it is able to surpass that flaw.
