~⚾️Here's My Cubs Fan Story⚾️~ I've been a true, devoted Chicago Cubs fan since I was in the 1st grade. I'm from South Texas, near Corpus Christi. But how I became a fan, is really interesting. When WGN used to be a Superstation back in the day, the games were broadcasted nationwide. In those days, we would get out of school a bit earlier then they do now in elementary. So by the time I would get out, the game would at times be in the 2nd, 3rd inning or, had yet to begin if it was a 3pm game or later. So I clearly remember getting home from school, making a sandwich, and eating Doritos with onion dip, or a McDonald's meal if I was lucky, doing homework, while watching the whole game on those massive tv's with the vinyl player in them, the speakers with the cloth type covering with wood design, and that knob with like 499 digits on it for some reason. Remember those? Haha! 😁 I would absolutely love to see Sammy Sosa do his signature "lip to heart touch, peace sign throw" after a homerun. Seeing Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, Luis Salazar, Steve Buechele, the base-stealers Corey Patterson and Sammy leaving flames on the basepaths. Steve Trachsel, Terry Mulholland, Greg Maddox, Kyle Farnsworth, Jon Leiber, Kerry Wood with his wicked fastball or, Mark Pryor with that nasty, sharp Slider of his. And I can't forget the homerun hitting pitcher Carlos Zambrano and his fiestyness. God those are some fond memories of my time! And not to mention, the Mcgwire and Sosa homerun chase to beat Roger Maris (though it got annulled), WHILE playing against one another. Geez! :D When the Cubs had that spectacular run in 2003, I was a senior in High School, and what an exciting time that was, albeit the horrible incident which I'm sure will never, ever happen again, that saddened me at the time of those actions!(God bless his heart with all sincerity!) I just fell in love with the history, the players of that time and past, Harry Carey, Steve Stone, and of course the vintage, classic stadium that of the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field and its fans-"The Loveable Losers." 😊 I went through the years of being in last place year after year, with horrible records, and having to tell my friends and teammates when asked who was my favorite team, and them being in the "what?!" state 'cause I was a Cubs fan, and telling me: "Cubs suck!". Of course I would laugh as well because hey...we did. Lmao. But I could care less because of my valid reasons. And I am sure, there are plenty who have a story like mine, not being from Illinois and all, but a devoted Cubs fan none the less and not a Bandwagoner...'cause I do know there are plenty of those out there now. But one thing I can say, seeing plenty of away Cubs games back in the day...Cubs always, always had a following no matter their decades of losing seasons! Thank you to the once WGN Superstation back in 1990, for airing Cubs games almost on the daily nationally, and turning this Southern Texas boy into a life-long Cubs fan since the First Grade! I truly dream to visit the Friendly Confines one day, and have myself some peanuts, a plain hotdog with a nice, cold Coca-Cola, and become a Bleacher Bum in left field. I have loved, and always will be a Chicago Cubs fan! Win, lose or tie...I'm a Chicago Cubs fan till the day I die! 🏆GO CUBS GO!⚾️

Forty-nine years ago tomorrow (if my memory serves me correctly)I was in what was the standing room section behind the left field bleachers in Wrigley Field watching the Cubs play the Braves. In the sixth inning, Hank Aaron came to bat against Ferguson Jenkins and hit a laser beam line drive home run that, when it came off the bat, looked like it was going to hit me in the head! It couldn't have taken two seconds to smash into the fence above and behind me and I can report it was still rising when it hit about six feet above me. That ball, I am sure, would have made the roofs across Waveland Avenue. Easily. The ball? Well, a kid younger than I was got number 560 from Hank Aaron...hope he still has it.
@danielzoller69115 жыл бұрын
I hope he threw it back.
@charlestidd46165 жыл бұрын
Nope...this was 1970 and the Bleacher Bums gave him the whole "Throw It Back" treatment, but he kept it. He left the area, though, because he was about 11 or 12 years old and he was really uncomfortable with a bunch of grown-ups yelling at him to throw the ball back. I'm glad for him that he kept it, but as a Cub fan I can appreciate your feelings about not returning an opponents HR at Wrigley Field.

Wrigley Field is a venerable park that just stands there and welcomes fans, people, players, and all who dare to come, and treat them all like old friends. Wrigley Field is not just some ballpark. It is a place that built a relationship with those who love her. That love will never die. Sadly people come and they go. Wrigley Field bids them a fond farewell as they disappear into history. We don't go to Wrigley Field. She allows us to come to her and experience excellence. Those who respond to her invitation understand that they too have a new friend and instantly become a part of history.

No better place than Wrigley field! Growing up if it was a beautiful day my aunt would take my sister and I to a game. We’d line up early as there was no advanced ticket sales in the bleachers. We usually sat in the right field bleachers. Some of my favorite rights fielders were Gary Mathews, Andre Dawson, Keith Moreland and of course Jason Heyward. I also loved Davey Martinez and Albert Almora in center. Good times!!!

. What is now known simply as ‘the basket’ didn’t come to the Confines until 1970. Leading up to the creation of the contraption, the stadium, like many others dealt with the challenge of fan interference. Because there was no way of keeping fans separated from the action, incidents of dubious interference along with people falling onto the field led to the basket.

Really can’t imagine what is so fascinating about Ivy for a homerun wall.. not only can it rob your team of runs when it gets stuck in there, they can’t bounce off it and ricochet and turn to triples. It’s major league baseball not kiddy street baseball. Just watch the outfielders when the ball is hit out there, they barely even run for it hoping it gets stuck in the Ivy. What a joke.
