That's exactly what I think as well. I don't think either of them are horrible people...she just needs to control him as she once felt so helpless, yet is also acting out with multiple men as a result of that abuse; and he is still looking for mom's love and approval. After watching a second time, my thought is that this couple are engulfed in a serious trauma bond. There's just too many obvious parallels with childhood experience here for me to think they have gone to good therapy and worked through all this so they can have a relationship that is fully conscious of their feelings and potential underlying motivations. I'm also concerned that they tried and failed to get pregnant for years. That can often be a serious blow to the self esteem of either partner. Many people feel like failures, or like less of a man/woman. Maybe they would go get a year of good therapy and still want this exact form of their relationship.....but they could be happier people in their lives overall. Even if they only did the new EMT therapy that involves eye movement to help process trauma, that would probably contribute to an increased sense of well being and peace for them. They both have some pretty painful skeletons that were thrown into their closets through no fault of their own.

I firmly believe the accident that left him incapacitated for over a year WAS the agent of change in their relationship. They admitted to having a healthy sex life between them prior to the accident. She nursed him for a year (he couldn't wipe his bum let alone have sex). It was within this nurse/patient time, that she went elsewhere to get her sexual needs met (with his approval) & the dynamics changed. She probably eventually viewed him in a non sexual way, possibly resentful of the lack of sex with him, the nursing she gave & morphed into the dominant partner who only enjoyed sex with black men. The problem is they didn't renew & renegotiate their relationship once he got better.
