If that last kid was my younger sibling I’d definitely have to sit them down and explain that what they’re feeling is only a crush and that it’s fine to relate to a celeb/Internet personality to a degree, but no Dream doesn’t “get you” because he’s not even aware of your existence. Dream isn’t talking to you specifically, he’s a guy in his room speaking to a camera. As tough as that’d be to hear they need to learn to separate fan/ online culture and real life. I’d also devote more of my free time to taking them outside to have real experiences, some kids (and adults tbf)are so plugged in that they don’t realize that 90% of the discourse and twitter hot takes mean absolutely nothing in the real world, and you don’t need to label yourself to try and belong somewhere. We’re all anxious and strange, let’s get you some interpersonal relationships bb

That last clip, and I'm aware of all the jokes about "Dream SMP fans have absent fathers" and making fun of "girls with daddy issues" but that clip to me reeks of absentee parenting; it isn't necessarily that the parents are physically absent, but the parents seem to be actively ignoring or at least they don't understand what their kid is doing online and the toxic habits they've formed. We've reached a point where loads of kids are being basically raised by the internet and especially e-celebrities, and it's now showing how much that can actively damage someone so young because they've not had any guidance or chance to mature yet. And as a result, kids are growing up more confused and unstable because their parents have either failed to keep up with them, or physically can't keep up if they tried. I think any parent should accompany their kid(s), especially if they're young, while on the internet and try to encourage making real in-person friendships and bonds over fake parasocial relationships on KZbin or Discord or whatever. Otherwise, how are they even gonna cope when reality finally sets in?

I'm less concerned by that kid identifying as Dream-sexual, because most kids do genuinely feel that way about their first crush: it's obsessive and all encompassing and it feels like they are literally the only person who understands you or could make you happy. It's cringe but harmless (assuming they grow out of it), and it doesn't matter whether it is a movie star or singer or streamer or the boy down the road, it's all the same and always has been. The difference is that most kids never used to have the facility to share their crazy with such a wide audience. Your family or friends might make fun of you for it in later years, or show you cringe photos of you kitted out in your TeenybopperBoyBand#258 merch, but it was never usually live streamed and discussed amongst audiences of thousands or even millions of strangers worldwide. That access to an audience, and the standard childish need for approval/acceptance, pushes them to do stuff like this, expecting waves of love and support and viral campaigns to promote your crush, and are met with dismissive disinterest (because who cares about some tween's celeb obsession?) it's hard to accept that given all you see is the fanfare over famous - even temporary 'viral' fame - people doing much the same thing. Weirdly, the main thing she and kids like her need to learn is "you don't matter". Not in a harsh way, but just that Dave getting in from night-shift on the other side of the planet is going to scroll right past your life-changing moment because he doesn't know or care about you, and that is OK as long as it's important to the people important to you. Value isn't a numbers game, if you have two good friends or family members who give a crap, that's not "worthless" just because Louise has 40k followers who 'liked' her status update about the same thing.
@wannabehistorian3713 жыл бұрын
This, this exactly. The internet has made this normal part of child development a mental health issue. I really think that it’s important to bring kids back to reality and remind them that their crushes, wants, etc are theirs and theirs only.

This is one of those situations where people born with the internet at their disposal falls into these weird pipelines at a very young and believe it as their truth, where something as basic as sexuality gets so broad and complex thanks to the internet's jokers or crazed. (joke or not some kids online just don't know what's good legitimate information sources to learn life on because the clear majority would be using it to socialize or play games. So, what should be deemed as bad and false information online that can have a clear bias or be completely false can go straight through them because they lack the experience and knowledge to deny what is false with no one to correct them before it sticks to them as their personal unflitered truth.) they'd believe liking a real person is a legitimate sexuality as they're still developing and having been told by whatever niche group of people online (hopefully not irl), i assume, that there isn't a defining boundary as what counts as a sexuality and what's just inappropriate and weird. I worry for the younger generation these days and i'm not even anywhere near old myself.

People could just say "i have a crush on Dream", and it would totally fine, but no, they have to make a gender called "Dreamsexual" to tell people they are in love with a guy that plays minecraft and has never show his face
@mediacat203 жыл бұрын
They’re not making a gender, they’re making a sexuality, but otherwise yeah. This kid definitely just has a very bad parasocial relationship, by saying “he gets people like me” they’re just showing that they don’t get everything as a whole. Plus they’re on discord at a super young age

@@mediacat20 Actually there are people claiming to be "Dreamgender" where they identify as Dream(???) I know this person in particular wasn't, but some do
@mediacat203 жыл бұрын
@@bonesaftonistired that is not referring to the minecraft youtuber. Dreamgender is a xenogender for people who feel like their gender exists in a dream-like state, or they feel like their gender is as faint as a dream is. It has nothing to do with dream the youtuber

You can't just call yourself dream sexual. The obsession and attraction to dream is one issue but you can't just have a sexuality that is attraction to one specific person. Sexuality defines the general conditions under which you are sexually attracted to someone like their gender and degree you feel sexual attraction towards said person. Being attracted to one specific person is just being attracted to that person
@GogiRegion3 жыл бұрын
In their defense, they did say, “and his kind of energy,” which I suppose could mean anyone who reminds them of Dream, which would more realistically just be pansexual with specific preferences, but more likely they just have a parasocial relationship and are going through some stuff.

I kinda feel for the "Dreamsexual" kid because they're clearly young and experiencing their first intense crush, and parasocial relations make it even more confusing. It's easy to mock but assuming she was for real (and I can totally see someone actually being like that) I know that she really is feeling it that strongly. She's probably having problems already so she has grabbed on with her dear life to the one thing that brings her some comfort, and has deluded herself into believing that it's actually something meaningful.

Obsessions may come and go, like creepypastas in 2013 definitely lived in my head rent-free. When interests feel unhealthy, it's important to try and ground yourself and appreciate your own experiences instead of becoming dependent on them to substitute for what might be missing in life. The community brings people together and friends and memories are made through this interest. I appreciate that :)

Oh man, at 23 I gotta say, that dream crush kid has some serious issues going on- probably not the best home life spurring them to attach so heavily to an online personality. Kids did it when I was a teen, I even did it (though not publicly or so severely), I had a few friends who did as well. I don't have any idea of how to 'fix' it, I think I just grew out of it as I experienced more outside of the very limited bubble I felt so othered in. Idk man, therapy is so needed for this kid

It’s a celebrity crush, not a sexuality. ‘Dream’ isn’t a gender. It’s okay to have a crush on a celebrity. It isn’t a sexuality though, and it’s a bit disrespectful to the LGBT community to label it as such. She’s a kid though, I think she just needs to take a step back a breathe

Only responding to the last one because the rest were fun to listen to, that one was pretty sad: but as an older brother to a younger sibling I probably would 1. Sit them down and explain the difference between sexuality and attraction, and just plain admiration because it kind of sounds like they’re confused about that. 2. I’d caution them about thinking too familiarly about a person online in the nicest way I can. I believe a lot of the p.file cases end up happening because kids will have that mentality that X-person knows me very well so x-person must love me. They don’t realize that x-person is just really good at deciphering an algorithm to give an intended audience what they want to see or hear. (Back when I was younger it was the same thing; I’d listen to songs, of identity with a character because I felt like the singer under stood my situation or the character would understand me if they were real. I think we all did something similar). 3. I would more importantly teach them to not participate in such toxic chats as that, because clearly, one or both sides set out to humiliate the other (just let people be fans of what ever they want…) 4. Most importantly i would sit down and talk with the (our) parents because being 30 and still kinda intune with internet stuff I get that I may have an understanding that an older generation might not but I feel like I’m old enough to have the wisdom of age so I could probably help mediate a healthy conversation that isn’t just “parents just don’t get it” vs “this stuff is inherently bad/dangerous because we don’t understand it”.

Tbh the whole Dreamsexual thing is literally mocking the LGBTQ+ community. The ppl who are saying they are Dreamsexual seriously are actually developing crushes on the guy himself. It's become a huge problem cause the serious ones are becoming racist, homophobic, transphobic and even sexist.

They need someone to have a talk to them about what the difference between a sexuality and what a celebrity crush is as well as a very serious talk about parasocial relationships.
