Those things are the bump stops. Stock trailing arms allow for a bracket that holds a rubber bumper.

Wonder why so few air cooled cars?? Maybe organizer should do free admission for early cars to get more interest?

From my understanding the early years of the show was mostly Mk1-4s and I guess that tradition of water-cooled has sorta stuck around.
