It was hard enough to get to Hattiesburg that day (which JBL mispronounced for cheap heat), but Hattiesburg in particular has always had a real flash flood problem. My second ever wrestling show was a Frontier Wrestling Alliance show in Worcester UK. I'm pretty sure most attending had printed out incorrect directions. When we eventually found the place (Purdiswell Leisure centre) we heard many there were delayed or couldn't make it - fans, wrestlers etc. Amazingly though we hadn't actually missed the show, because they were purposefully delaying it waiting for others to potentially arrive. FYI - I was at the 2002 show mentioned as the first in their annual runs. Hattiesburg did not receive UPN at that time, which carried Smackdown, which meant fans attending weren’t up to date on a number of developments, such as wondering why Ron Simmons was on the card but not long time tag partner Bradshaw, as this was shortly after the “brand extension” where Raw and Smackdown became their own entities. I was not in the area past that year, so I don’t know if they were still minus UPN in subsequent years. No matter how you cut it, running shows using a roster with little exposure in that market seemed to have declining returns. Edit - Apparently there was a UPN station out of Gulfport, about 45 minutes south of Hattiesburg, but I don’t remember it being on the cable system at that time nor do I remember being able to get it with an antenna. Either way, it was on the fringes of the market and didn’t have large exposure, as opposed the NBC affiliate which was the only station based in the city at that time.

My bet for what happened is that there was a forecast of bad weather and they told the talent that were driving to skip Hattiesburg and go directly to Jackson (maybe staying overnight in Birmingham or Chatanooga) rather than risk driving 12 hours through storms for a house show with 1500 tickets sold. And the talent that actually made it and performed, since they were all the top talent (minus MnM, but maybe they got better treatment since they were with Melina and were going to get a big push on debuting) my guess is they flew to Jackson or a town only an hour or two drive away from whatever airport, so it wouldn't take more than a few hours driving to and from hattiesburg.

I got a little obsessive over the lack of answer here so I checked two different weather archives for a few locations on that route and it all says conditions were fair for that day with absolutely no rainfall at all (or very little but later in the night? not sure). So the inclimate weather excuse doesn't seem right to me. The closest I could find was a tornado a week earlier in about 50 miles of the route but that wouldn't have caused a delay. I tried to check some newspaper archives but i didn't have access and realized I had gone a little too deep. Anyway, there had to be a reason for 18 people to no show to work. Something had to have happened. A decade and a half later and no one thought to follow up? Also, you guys should post a link to sources in the video description.

I like how everyone says Jack pronounces Fayetteville wrong and then phonetically gives a different 'correct' one..

If it was me booking, start with a JBL promo in the ring. Have Cena, Guerrero, Angle, Big Show and Booker T all come out to challenge. Have it be decided that they all want a shot so they can all compete... in a GAUNTLET MATCH. Guerrero starts vs Booker T. Then Guerrero wins and loses to Angle who loses to Cena. Then Big Show comes out and loses to Cena. Afterwards JBL comes out and announces that he has one more test... because he doesn't believe Cena is deserving, he has to fight through one more test in order to face him. Cena has to face new JBL cabinet members MNM in a 2 on 1 handicap match. Cena wins after JBL tries to interfere to cost Cena but accidentally clobbers Joey Mercury. Cena takes advantage to win. Guerrero and Angle come out to discuss what tonight means for their respective wrestlemania matches, Kurt offering advice about mysterio for Eddie, starts badmouthing Rey. Eddie makes the point of his respect and continued friendship with Rey with Kurt keeping digging a hole smacktalking Rey, leading to them reignited their feud from the prior years wrestlemania. Eddie won last year, kurt won tonight, so let's have one more right now to see once and for all who the best really is. Match wrestles to a double pin conclusion. Each one finally acknowledging the others skills. Cena comes out to face JBL. JBL attacks from behind while cena enters. Beats him down around the ring. Cena rolls in and the match starts. Cena makes a comeback hitting JBL with all his big moves, JBL trying to use dirty tricks to get at cena. Raking eyes etc. JBL goes down, pretends Cena hit him low when the ref wasn't looking. Ref tending to JBL while MNM slide into the ring. Nitro comes off the top while Mercury goes to help JBL. Nitro caught in an FU by Cena. JBL low blows Cena while the ref is busy with Mercury. Hits the clothesline from hell and Just about retains over an exhausted Cena. The 3 start a beat down and you have Big Show come out to make the save, still angry from JBL costing him earlier in the gauntlet by trying to attack Cena and hitting big show instead. Show ends with JBL and MNM running while Cena and Big Show stand tall

A night full of Cena, Eddie, Angle, and Booker? Plus JBL and Big Show doing their things? Sounds like value for money!

Damn I was at the Raw house show just a week prior to this in Dothan. Triple H does not like being called a chicken, as one fan found out the hard way.

I went to a tna house show I believe it was 08 or maybe 09. It had to be a 6 match show it had advertised the main event mafia members who all didn’t appear. It featured Samoa Joe defending the championship which he didn’t have because booker T stole it and a main event match between Kurt angle and AJ styles with angle staying in to take photos. Not a bad show for 20 bucks plus the autograph session afterwards

never in my life did I think I would see images of Hattiesburg on Cultaholic..

As a driver I can safely say that it takes you about 8 hours just to get 200 miles in. Now if taking the Highways it be much better if you take the toll roads as they are more free and people hate paying for tolls. But for 500 miles is impossible to go from 1 town to another. As you watch the Ride along on the WWE network you can see the talent travels to the hotel to get whatever sleep they can. 4 to 6 hours would be enough rest but if jam packed traffic you will be bored and start to fall asleep. Whomever booked that building should have been fired for the impossible. I don't think traveling by plane wouldn't been much better.
@bigpoppa12342 жыл бұрын
With a 10 hour drive and storm forecasts, my bet is they were never going to run a show with a lot of talent. The lower talent they said to skip Hattiesburg and go straight to Jackson for TV and they ran the show using their top guys and sent them by plane.

All things considered they did a real good job working with what they had. Can’t imagine how beat up cena in particular was after working that much in one night. Can’t ever say he didn’t work for everything he got.
