There’s so much packed into this tutorial, need to watch it a couple more time, but thank you Andy! One of the key things that I will definitely take away is that not everything needs to be fully highlighted and shiny. Keeps a proper focus on the bits you do then highlight. Can’t wait for the new box set. Will apply a lot of this to the White Scars!

Loved this a lot to take in. Plan on a sons of Horus legion so very useful. I’ve recently purchased the pro acryl paints( apart from the intense range I’ve got all the others) so useful to me. The coins represent the secret lodge in the legion that Erebus put into each of the traitor legions to create secret meetings to start the mistrust of the imperium in time. The coin showed you were a member.

Been watching different videos of yours on and off for a week. I painted WH40k back between 95-99 with 2nd edition and a small bit of 3rd. Haven't played much since or painted anything. I purchased some mkIII and mkIV space marines last year to get back into the hobby. Now going to get the Horus Heresy box set this June. The plan has always been to do Luna Wolves pre-heresy of course. I also used to have a Vega Airbrush back in high school 91-92. You're making me realize so many things about miniature painting I just didn't think of back in the late 90s. Using an airbrush to create gradients much smoother than successive coats of glaze is such a great idea I am sad I didn't think of it back then. Thanks for the wonderful expertise in this craft. Can't wait to apply it to my Luna Wolves in Mk3,4, and 6 armor this summer. :)

there's a nice and very understated orange rust that contrasts the sea-green so beautifully. and unnoticed it does add a lot more to strengthen the rest of so mellow a color. along with the intended darkening that comes with shading and contrast on their armor. even a small flash of yellow on certain plates. its going to be difficult but im lucky enough to have Book 1 by my side to help me get it right.

I've been working on a wraith Knight recently. Because of some impulsive gluing my sub assemblies were less than ideal, but I found that blutac and plastic wrap are a really good way to mask things off quickly. The bluetack can be pressed up to the edges and it holds the plastic sheet down. and the wrap is very flexible so it can contour to shapes and wrap around to adhere to itself.

Great video. I have a little insight on the gun barrels like the minigun photo you used as reference. I would think that the "shinier" parts of that weapon are cerakote, which is a baked on ceramic coating used on many modern high wear metal items. The barrels themselves however are probably blued. Bluing is a chemical process which darkens the steel and is used in a large percentage of firearms. It provides rust protection. On this weapon however, the heat generated by rapid fire damages the bluing on a microscopic level, giving it that really cool grey mottled look. It also gives it a slight texture if you were to touch it, almost like a rough paper feel? The cerakote would stay very slick feeling. I might have tried some slightly different color highlights, one for barrels, one for "other" parts, and give the barrels an ultra matte varnish, and the rest of it something more satin. Anyway, I loved the video, and keep up the great work.

The contrast medium is pretty matt, while the contrast paints are slightly satin. If you want to preserve the shine of the metallics, than thinning with a gloss medium/water instead of contrast medium, might be better. If you are going for a dulled down look, than no worries. Those exhausts do stand out a little too much imo (based on the photo's at the and), so maybe the dulling down was beneficial.

I really love how this came out and I am really excited for the new HH boxset as everything that is coming for HH is all I ever wanted for space marines in general. I plan on doing mine as SoH as well but I do not have an airbrush and also no possibility to get one. I am currently asking myself if it would be sensible to try stippling to create similar highlight patterns with a nice textured effect like it is shown in the video, or if I should resort to the classic GW edge highlighting method. I am just afraid that the models will look really flat ad boring if I dont shade or highlight the armor volumetrically. Anyways, this video was a big inspiration and now I am even more excited.
@cultofpaint2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely you could do it with some stippling/dry brushing.

Richard Gray has done a few videos over the last couple weeks about using stippling to start Horus Heresy Marines, that may help you out there; in fact, the algorithm (all praise its benevolent wisdom) sent me here from one of them! When you get that frosting on the egdes of the transfer i give it a few more layers of varnish and then i sand it smooth with a 1200-1500grit sandpaper to make it smooth and then give it another varnish. You might want to try it, Just a tip
@stefan0202902 жыл бұрын
have you maybe considered the weathering waterclor pencils from ak for the weathering? they are a bit more forgiving than regular acrylics since they can be wiped away completely with water. Could help to save some time since you said you spend hours on the chipping stage regarding you looking up pictures of miniguns. you can be most certainn, that the barrels arent painted any colour. with about 6000 rounds per minute, nobody would ever bother painting them as the residual heat of the barrels would burn away any colour in a short amount of time. they are maybe coated in some material to keep them from corroding or oxidisation.

Did you use a decal solution with your transfers? I do use tamiya mark fit strong and cotton buds on all my decals, and it seems to dissolve/takeaway the transparent film of the decals nearly completely, so that no silvering or shine remains. On my models only the printed parts of the decals seem to remain. Maybe its worth giving that a try on your old decals?
