Larry Torres is an Assistant Professor of foreign languages and cultures at The University of New Mexico - Taos. In 1993 Walt Disney, at the America Salutes its Teachers Program, named him outstanding national Foreign Language teacher of the year. He has received numerous honors and awards and has appeared in several magazines. He is a popular speaker in the field of cultural sensitivity and teacher training, as well as a speaker on global education.

This was a fantastic presentation. I'm Anglo but a native new Mexican who lived in northern NM. When I lived in Italy the locals all said I spoke Italian with a Mexican accent. I married A Brazilian and they said I spoke Portuguese with an Italian accent. When I lived in south Florida I didn't understand the Spanish spoken there due to all the different south American dialects and they didn't understand me. To make matters worse I studied German in college. The few Germans I spoke to did say I spoke with no accent at all. Over time I recognized that my Spanish was northern NM.

Thanks for the enlightened presentation. As a former professor, I had to try to gather some of these concepts on my own, although I taught at a Mexican university, I was a "foreign" professor teaching in a foreign language, I still needed to engage my students with stories. The great irony was that we were not supposed to speak Spanish in the classroom, since the students were in an English immersion program. Yet, I needed to break into Spanish to keep my students together in level of knowledge. It's one thing to speak a second language and another to learn difficult subjects in that languages.

I just came across this video while recovering from surgery. Lots of time on my hands. I’m from California but have Northern New Mexican roots.I’ve been wanting to know more about that part of my culture, the history and customs. I loved your presentation and explanation. I wish I had had a professor like you when I went to university. Because I was adopted I was denied the knowledge of my ancestry, my cultural roots and just an understanding of who I am. I will be spending more time in NM doing genealogical research and learning about the customs of this unique state.

Nice explanation of the variety of Spanish-speaking peoples, it bothers me when politicians tend to speak of Latinos as one block. Even my Mexican wife asked me yesterday, “Como sabes que la gobernadora [Lujan Grisham] es latina? De donde es?” “Es de Nuevo México.” “Por ser de Nuevo México es latina?” “No, pero sus familia ha estado allí desde los colonistas españoles por cientos de años.” Now I realize there’s a high probability that the governor’s ancestors weren’t even Spanish, jajaja.

La mayor parte de los polacos emigrados a América son en realidad judíos españoles, sefardíes de Sefarat, tierra de leche y miel, España, que emigraron a Polonia desde España en el siglo ix. La mayoría de los ingleses, salvo los depredadores vikingos, son en realidad celtas españoles y vascos que crearon asentamientos en lo que hoy es Inglaterra. Los vascos iban a pescar ballenas a las áreas nordicas y crearon poblados en británia, a mitad de camino. La mayor parte de los pobladores del norte de Nueva España, es decir, Nuevo México, Texas y California eran vascos. Ellos llevaron allí su música y sus intrumentos musicales, entre ellos la trikitixa, que es un acordeón pequeño, así como sus polkas. Las polkas españolas están en toda América.

Esos mismos judíos españoles que se fueron a América son de las mismas familias que se quedaron. En España las costumbres son las mismas. En los pueblos de la España profunda la gente tiene también costumbres judías como lavar la carne para quitarle la sangre y muchas otras. Forman parte de las tradiciones españolas. El chotis es música española, concretamente de Madrid. No es escocesa. Para vuestra información deberíais saber que los escoceses proceden de la mezcla entre celtas irlandeses y pictos. Los celtas irlandeses proceden de los celtas de España, concretamente de Galicia. Los marineros gallegos en los tiempos pre-romanos fundaron asentamientos en Eire (Irlanda). De hecho comparten su mitología sobre el rey Breogán, su rey, que vivía en Galicia.

Para que aprendáis algo sobre los musulmanes que llegaron a España os recomiendo a la historiadora Eva Tobalina, el video llamado "Jordania y los Omeyas. Eva Tobalina", del canal Raíces de Europa. Veréis que lo único árabe que hay en España son algunos dulces que ellos hacían con los productos de nuestra tierra, y nada más. Todo lo demás es cristiano realizado por los cristianos en tierra ocupada por musulmanes, que nos copiaron todo.

Medina, Salazar, Espinosa, Pérez, son absolutamente españoles. Es el colmo de la tontería ver a un americano explicar lo español sin tener ni la más remota idea. Incluso mi apellido es español y soy 100% ibera. En España no hay apellidos musulmanes ni judíos. Los iberos se cambiaron el apellido para no pagar impuestos, pero proceden de tribus iberas, y aunque no fuera así, todos eran españoles. En España había varias religiones y todos eran españoles. Pérez significa hijo de Pedro, y aunque fuera judío es tan español como cualquiera. Los judíos llevaban más de 2000 años en la península Ibérica dando forma a nuestra cultura, de la música judía mezclada con otras músicas peninsulares surge la música española. Abderramán III era vasco, rubio y de ojos azules, Ibn Mardanis (Martínez) era de familia cristiana, y así todo. Los musulmanes eran cuatro gatos llegados de lo que hoy es Siria, no vinieron todos a Iberia, se limitaron a obligar cambiar la religión y el nombre a los que estábamos. Dejen ya de decir estupideces para confundir a la gente en América. Bastante ignorantes son ya como para que les confundan aun más.

El legado español en América es mucho, hasta tu ropa es española, los ranchos, las reses, los caballos, todo llegó a América desde las marismas del Guadalquivir, Andalucía, España, ese legado está presente desde norteamérica hasta Chile.

La sensación de estar abandonados no es exclusiva de Nuevo México, es generalizada en toda la América hispana. Se debe a que ignoráis vuestras raíces hispanas, y lo hacéis a propósito creyendo que así adquirís identidad propia. Pero eso es un error. Ningún país ni Estado puede sustentarse en una nube. Todo el mundo necesita saber de donde ha salido para poder tener cimientos sólidos, y no autoenañarse. Tenéis un problema con el mundo anglosajón malmetiendo a las gentes para que abandone su auténtica cultura, ese hecho os deja desprotegidos y sin identidad real.

We have to preserve the Spanish language but it has to follow the rules, Spanish is a beautiful language. I am Mexican and I don’t care about mixing English and Spanish together, but a correct educated Spanish. Being that my ancestors are from Mexico, I would want to preserve and stay true to the Mexican variety. As a Mexican I would never learn the Spanish from Spain or any other part of Latin America. Mexican Spanish has no tone or accent, atono, the way Americans Speak English. As a Mexican, both parents from the same little Rancho in Zacatecas, Mexico, there would be a definite culture clash as far as language and culture with the Hispanos from New Mexico as it is from other parts of Latin America.
