Francisco "El Comanche" Gonzales leads Los Comanches de la Serna in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, as they celebrate the birth of Christ, or "Emanuel" on New Year's Day 2019. In the middle of a snowstorm, for twelve long hours, they drum, sing and dance their way around their community. Part of the "Music Buena" exhibit opening October 6th, 2019 at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM and running for the next two years. If you would like to support our work recording disappearing traditional culture, please donate at: thewisdomarchiv...

Leah, my Mom and Dad used to live in Talpa too. I remember seeing Los Comanches dance in the late 70's early 80's. The interwoven fabric of the Indian and Hispanic cultures is fascinating. The pride in the Veterans and their service is heart-warming. Didn't Mr. and Mrs. Vigil own the store adjacent to the church? Van Buchanan, Wichita, Kansas

Ojalá no se pierdan esas tradiciones. Lo peor que le puede pasar a un pueblo es olvidar sus raices, en este caso hispanas y comanches.

New Mexico has a mixture of Hispanic and Indian. It is all a rich heritage. And we all get along as friends. I wish we had all learned since our younger generation from our ancestors. They often told us the stories of the past but at times we often thought about playing and as we get older we say we wish we could have listened and learned from our ancestors. We got along better with Indians then people coming from Mexico and those countries.

I am Comanche. I am so curious about you guys, anyone willing to share your experiences? El Comanche said that kids of other Pueblo tribes tend to know more oral history (of the connection between them and us) than Comanche children do. That much is true. There’s a lot of work to be done. Reach out and share your experiences.
