Culture and the Intraoral Exam: The Uvulectomy

Two women from Ethiopia discuss having their uvula's removed by traditional healers as a treatment for recurring tonsillitis. Dr. Crowley and her team noticed this practice while providing a five-day training and wanted to document the cultural practice. This is just one more example of how much culture permeates all aspects of our lives, inside and out.

the resolution of recurrent tonsillitis after uvulectomy totally can't be explained... unless it was recurrent uvulitis. However those palates look partially cleft after the procedure
