Culture shock as an international student: My experience

Hi all, welcome back to my channel.
In this video, I talked about interesting culture shock that i experienced as i came to study in the UK. Following my move to the UK, i experiences differences in teaching and learning style. This is different from Nigerian learning style. Other things such as change in weather, i never experienced short winter days before travelling to the UK (lol). Also, i had things such as interaction with my lectures and the ease to ask questions, very shocking. Coming from Nigeria, this is different because we do not relate so easily with our lectures. This video is just to share my experiences and prepare your mind for differences in environment as you come to study your course.

Who I am :
I am a lecturer in public health in a higher education institution in the UK. I came into the UK as an international student. Using strategies that I will be sharing on this channel, I was able to secure a PhD scholarship on my first application. So in essence, I discuss useful academic tips to maximise benefit of being a student in the UK. I draw on my experiences as both student and an academic to propel you to success.

Great video. I'm happy you got shocks that also changed your perspective about student-lecturer relationship. Similarly, I have gotten same shock from students I supervised in their thesis here. My simple lifestyle and relations with them makes them marvel of I'm from Nigeria and that's because I have always seen life as common place for everyone, no need to be too bossy to anyone including students because you are ahead of them. Also being privileged to be around a lecture who spent years in US, his kindness to student also influenced mine. This my comment is becoming too long😅, anyways thanks for sharing

Can never be too long, it's really eye opening how different environments impact on our interactions. I think this also affects student learning in somewhere like Nigeria. When you fear your lecturer, one tend to be less confident to engage, have intellectually productive discussions with them. This really needs to be addressed, thank you for your comment
