Hi there, it's Tsenam here, today I discuss the difference between #Tibetan and #Sherpa #cultures from someone who share part of both cultures. These two cultures are unique and amazing and need to be appreciated equally, so I am making this video to show everyone how good Tibetan and Sherpa culture really is.
Sherpa Molas Live In High Altitudes and Had To Climb Hills, So They Always Wore Sneakers To Get Around Places, so this is one way you can distinguish a Sherpa from Tibetan, from their shoes.

Where do sherpas come from? History. The Sherpa originally came from eastern Tibet, crossing the Nangpa La pass at 5,900 m 19,200 ft. They settled in the Kumbu region known as the gateway to Mount Everest to the south. Traditionally, they are the traders making the famous trans - Himalayan trade between Nepal and Tibet.

Why are they called sherpas? The term sherpa or sherwa derives from the Sherpa language words ཤར shar ("east") and པ pa ("people"), which refer to their geographical origin of eastern Tibet.

The argument that Sherpas are indeed Tibetans stems from their shared ancestry, cultural heritage, and linguistic connections with Tibet. Here are some points to consider: 1. **Ancestry**: Sherpas are believed to have migrated from Tibet to the Solu-Khumbu region of Nepal several centuries ago. Genetic studies have shown that Sherpas have close genetic ties to Tibetan populations, further supporting their Tibetan origins. 2. **Cultural Heritage**: Sherpas share many cultural practices and traditions with Tibetans, including Tibetan Buddhism, which is the dominant religion among Sherpas. Their religious ceremonies, festivals, and rituals bear strong similarities to those practiced in Tibet. 3. **Language**: The Sherpa language, called Sherpa or Sherpa Bhotia, belongs to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It shares significant linguistic similarities with Tibetan languages spoken in Tibet and other Tibetan-influenced regions. 4. **Geographical and Historical Connections**: The Sherpa homeland lies in close proximity to Tibet, and historical records indicate frequent interactions and migrations between the two regions. Sherpas have historically served as traders, guides, and intermediaries between Tibet and Nepal, further illustrating their connections with Tibet. 5. **Self-Identification**: Many Sherpas themselves identify as ethnically Tibetan and maintain strong cultural ties to Tibet. While they may have distinct regional identities within Nepal, their shared Tibetan heritage is an integral part of their identity. Overall, the evidence suggests that Sherpas are indeed ethnically and culturally linked to Tibet, highlighting the historical and cultural connections between the two regions.

Thank you Tshering jyui for sharing your observations and experiences. I am a Nepalese too and always interested to learn about fellow Nepalese and others in the himmalayan community. I also have a request which hopefully you would entertain. Currently there is a trend in corporate world of using the term "Sherpa" as a cooler term for a guide. I have experienced it too in some meetings and have left a mixed sorta of feeling about it. In one hand, as a Nepalese its distorting the correct usage of the term which to me is for the Sherpa ethnicity or "caste" as they say in Nepal. In the other hand, is it something to make a big deal about specially when I am not even as a Sherpa. As you also said in the video, we genrally take things easy so i obsviously havent confronted anyone about the usage of the term in that meaning. I would love to hear your thoughs on it.

Most of the peoples don’t even care . Ya and I have seen some Sherpa and Tamangs who are telling that they are from Tibet ,(don’t know why they care so much) And don’t you dare say the dress is copied coz it’s our own traditional dress and we have our own language (which may be similar). And most of the Sherpa doesn’t care ,we just know that we are Sherpa .And you guys need to stop thinking that Sherpa wants to be accepted by some racist Tibetans .And what makes you think that we want to be accepted by you .I don’t know why few peoples claim and argue being a tibetan .Pure sherpa are just sherpa who are from Solukhumbu ,etc. In Nepal most of the rongba peoples don’t even know you guys ,if they saw you they will just think it’s sherpa peoples. At last we are all Buddhist ❤so why are guys arguing 🙂❤️

Sherpas are often referred to as Nepali due to their residency in Nepal and their status as citizens of the country. While they have Tibetan ancestral roots and share many cultural similarities with Tibetans, Sherpas have been living in the Solu-Khumbu region of Nepal for several centuries. Over time, they have integrated into Nepali society while still maintaining their distinct cultural identity. Furthermore, the term "Nepali" is commonly used to describe anyone living in Nepal or holding Nepali citizenship, regardless of their ethnic background. As such, Sherpas, along with other ethnic groups in Nepal, are often included under the umbrella term "Nepali" in a national context. However, within Nepal, there is recognition of the diverse ethnic groups that make up the country, including Sherpas. While they may be referred to as Nepali in a broader sense, their unique cultural heritage and Tibetan ancestry are acknowledged and celebrated as part of Nepal's rich cultural tapestry.

Sherpas are just a Tibetic ethnic group that migrated from Tibet during the 12-13th century. There's no other point of origin neither in any article or in centuries worth of Sherpa oral history. That's why the Sherpas and Tibetans have so much in common even the Sherpa language is like a dialect of Tibetan. Well nowdays because the the Tibetans were exiled by the CCP (fuck the Chinese government) i prefer Sherpas be referred as Tibetic rather than Tibetan.
