"There Were Three Sisters, Who Only Had Two Shirts" by Justyna Mielnikiewicz: Janina Bivol

"There Were Three Sisters, Who Only Had Two Shirts" is the title of a photographic exhibition by Justyna Mielnikiewicz. It documents the life of the Polish diaspora in the multicultural region of Bukovina in Romania, specifically around Suceava County, which includes Poiana Micului, Solonețu Nou and Pleșa, places inhabited by a Polish minority for centuries. Mielnikiewicz created her photo reportage by following the daily lives of the inhabitants of this region, accompanying them during religious ceremonies, harvest festivals and school competitions. One of the most important aspects was learning about their individual stories and how they define their national identity, belonging and patriotism.
The exhibition "There Were Three Sisters, Who Only Had Two Shirts" was on display from March 2nd to April 28th 2024 at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, where it was organised as a prelude to the POLAND-ROMANIA Cultural Season 2024-2025. From May 18th to September 1st 2024, the exhibition will be transferred to the National Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw.
