Gail had a sad life due to drinking and died because of it at 36. So many in Hollywood suffer from drugs and drinking. She had a God given beauty!

Supposedly she had severe stage fright and never really wanted to be an actress but was pressured into it by her family. Her early directors had her makeup girl get her drunk enough to loosen up on set. She was exploited by the industry. Wayne was actually a good friend to her and they seem to have liked each other a lot. So much so that his estranged wife charged her, without foundation, of sleeping with Wayne and breaking up their marriage. Wayne tried to get her work later but she was too far gone into alcoholism unfortunately. A true Hollywood tragedy, as she seems to have been a genuinely nice person, very beautiful and the camera loved her face.

Gail Russell was noticeably depressed, she looks ill, and looks like she's been crying before each scene. Her depression shows through, yet she performed her role exceptionally well.

John Wayne dans un film (de James Edward Grant - plus scénariste du Duke que réalisateur), portant sur la notion de difficile rédemption. Qui se fait ici par le biais du coup de foudre amoureux - Gail Russell, aussi belle que touchante. Ça y va en douceur, reposant sur les tergiversations de Wayne, les provocations devant le faire sortir de ses gonds et le faire se réfugier dans la castagne… même si c’est une castagne comique, marque de fabrique de l’acteur (hop une bagarre de bar !). Provocations venants aussi bien de malhonnêtes que d’un shérif sournois et super fort, incarné avec délice par Harry Carey. Accessoirement on comprend peut-être mieux pourquoi John Wayne détestera autant « Le train sifflera 3 fois »… ce n’est pas peut-être pour la représentation de la lâcheté d’une ville, mais aussi parce-que le film de Zinnemann renie la philosophie Quaker. Alors que chez Wayne, celle-ci est très respectée, ouverte à l’optimisme.

Herausragend in dem Film ist die real so unglückliche Gail Russell. Die Alkoholikerin lag am 26. August 1961 im Alter von 36 Jahren tot in ihrer Wohnung in Brentwood, Kalifornien. Hier spielte sie ausgerechnet eine Quäkerin ... Die Kranke war eine Schönheit, die mit Jane Russell zu vergleichen war. Mit John Wayne war sie befreundet - nicht mehr.

lol the person/ppl editing the closed caption really butcher it during this movie - i’m guessing there’s no way that English is their first language. Since i pretty much know the entire film verbatim it’s really kind of entertaining to see the difference in translations, it can be quite funny! 🤟🏼🤣
