Not a “western”. It’s a Civil War movie set in Tennessee and Mississippi which isn’t that far west although it was in the “Western Theater “ of the Civil War. Still it is one of my favorite John Wayne movies in spite of historical inaccuracies as to uniforms and equipment. It’s loosely based on Grierson’s Raid in 1863. One inaccuracy is that Andersonville Prison didn’t open until 1864. POWs in 1863 were still exchanged. When Vicksburg surrendered, the garrison was paroled and spent the rest of the summer in parole camps. They returned to duty in time for the Chattanooga campaign that autumn and the Atlanta campaign the next year. Grant noted that many of the prisoners he captured at Vicksburg had also been captured at Ft Donelson in 1862. He was getting tired of capturing the same men again and again. That was one reason the exchange system broke down by 1864 resulting in Andersonville.

Director John Ford was notably sentimental about the actors and crew who had worked with him over the years in his film 'family.' Among these was an old stunt man and western wrangler, Fred Kennedy. Against his better judgment, Ford gave Kennedy a stunt ride in "The Horse Soldiers." Kennedy's horse fell, breaking the old actor's neck. The scene was retained in the final cut. But Ford was broken-hearted with guilt

It was a tough, grinding film to shoot. The cast was worn out and the scenes in the swamp caused many to get very sick, wracked by fevers etc. The locals warned Ford it was a bad idea to film there but he ignored them, a big mistake. The resulting footage wasn't worth it, for about a minute of screen time, look closely how the cast is struggling. That bit at the bridge wasn't supposed to be the ending, Dukes men were supposed to go in triumph into Baton Rouge. But all involved just wanted to the shoot to end, hoping the cinematic genius Ford would come up with the right ending. William Holden just wanted to get to 'get out of Dodge' as both he and Ford had grown to hate each other. Wayne was deep into the production details of The Alamo, he was putting in 18 hour days between acting and the planning. Ford was also devastated over the death of a stuntman pal in one of the battle scenes and just wasn't interested in the film after that as in his grief he just wanted to be done with a production that cost a life.

The Horse Soldiers is my favorite Wayne movie BUT it is NOT a Western. The movie is loosely based upon real events that happened during the siege of Vicksburg, MS in 1863 during the Civil War. Wayne plays Col John Marlow who is based upon Union Col Benjamin Grierson, a music teacher from Illinois. The movie glamorizes (add Hannah Hunter) Grierson's Raid, an expedition that started at La Grange, TN on 17 April and that ended on May 2nd, 1863 in Baton Rouge, LA. The raid was quite exciting and pulled off brilliantly, having totally confused the Confederate general in charge (John Pemberton) as to what General Grant was up to.

John Wayne's best American Civil war film...... An immediate historical note btw near the start they talk about Andersonville Prison. That did not come into existance till February of 1864. And by the end of the film they had mentioned Andersonville about 20 times..... Just to clarify this film is about Grierson's raid which took place in April to May of 1863. At that point no Andersonville. In that point in the war the Union and the Confederacy were still exchanging prisoners so, Henry Kendall, will be home by early Autumn if not late summer.

One of my favorite Ford flicks, even if there are a few cheesy parts. I heard though that it wasn’t that successful, may have lost money. There are several great Ford Wayne movies, Stagecoach, They were Expendable, Red River, the cavalry trilogy, (Rio Grande, She wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache), Quiet Man (another one of my favorites). Oh yeah, the Searchers! But my favorite western from that era was Shane. I never cared for his politics though for a guy who avoided military service during WW2 when other top actors went to serve, was kind of like a certain slob with feet problems going to occupy the White House who talks big but made sure he didn’t serve.

While this was directed by John Ford, it simply isn’t the best John Wayne western. Ford directed The Searchers as well and it makes this movie feel almost formulaic by comparison. Three years earlier The Searchers had everything: a superior script, greater supporting cast, and iconic cinematic shots. It stands as an example to be taught in film schools world wide. In it, the Duke isn’t really a wholly sympathetic character. Playing against type really made him loom larger than usual. When KZbin contributors make outlandish or unsupportable claims (clickbait) it’s usually to sell something or push individual taste. Go watch the Searchers and you will understand why this is true.

In reality John Wayne never would have fought in the Civil War. The coward avoided all wars off screen.

More of a war movie than a western (it's actually set in the Southeast) but a great film anyways.
