Culvert Pipe Install on a Friday Afternoon

Installing a Culvert Pipe for a Field Driveway w/ Mini Excavator and Bobcat. We are in a hurry to install a 10"X30' culvert pipe in the road ditch for a field driveway before an upcoming rainstorm. Using a John Deere 35G mini-excavator, a Bobcat S650 skid loader, Ford F-750 Dump Truck and John Deere 310SE backhoe, we quickly work to try to get a new culvert pipe installed late in the day on a Friday afternoon. This culvert pipe installation provides easy entrance into a farm field for the farmers with big equipment. This finished job turns out really nice. Cool drone shots included.

This is how I know Neil is about attention to details, he used the grade stick to get the correct amount topsoil off for the culvert pipe.... I have yet to see anyone else so do that!

I can tell you and I are on the same wavelength, although my wife would tend to disagree with us both. The older I get, the less I tend to save but when it comes to stuff like this, I'll always find a place to stash it so that it might find a new use in a different project. I try to re-purpose and reuse whenever possible. Thanks for mentioning the music. I always wonder about that but nobody mentions it. In KY. you call your local state highway dept. garage. They send someone out and look at where you want the entrance. They will then tell you the size pipe required for that spot. You go get the pipe and bring to the site. They then come and install it with their equipment and gravel. From that point on you are no longer responsible for it. EVER. They told me this is due to liability for accidents if someone leaves the road and hits the end of the pipe. Oh yeah, if it ever needs replacing, everything is on them. Pipe and all. Great work and love the videos.

I'm a retired contractor for civil construction and concrete contracting building and civil. Here in Australia they stopped using corrugated pipe due to the acid in the soil eating away the pipe.

Greetings! Nice to meet a Koch from Australia! That's a good point. Old habits die hard because this pipe will likely corrode eventually as well but should be good for 40+ years I'd think. We use plastic pipe oftentimes when the application calls for 12" or larger because then the pipe is available in the stronger dual wall. This job could have been a candidate for 10" PVC I suppose but that is more pricey. For longevity sake, we probably shouldn't use the galvanized corrugated pipe anymore either. The limestone used to cover galvanized culvert will destroy it. Surprised you did not use ADS which will far outlast steel. This is all we use for past 35 years.

This is 6/20/2022 How has the install been working out? I speculate that that ditch in front of the house causes trouble when mowing. Could a culvert pipe be installed from the farm field entry past this property so the lawn could be level with the road. That would improve the mowing but would it cause other problems?

The culvert is holding up great! We shaped up a little bit of the edges so that it's easy to mow and they keep it looking beautiful. Wish I could attach a picture cuz I am sitting inside the office right in front of it.

What is the payload capacity for your dump truck? Do you need a CDL to drive that size truck?

This truck is plated at 33,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. I can haul about 20,000 pounds of material. Yes, you need a CDL for anything over 26,000 GVW.

Any idea what the weight capacity is for something like this? I have a small ravine I need to get a culvert on to continue my driveway. The problem is I need a 40-50 ton capacity culvert because we are building a new home on the large property and concrete trucks need to be able to cross. Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks!

Hi Kristen. A steel culvert like this one when backfilled with all stone will support your concrete trucks and dump trucks no problem. You need to be sure that any soft material like topsoil is removed in order to support the new material to be added to the top. Just like we did in the video. For this truck you technically do need one since it has a GVW of 33,000 pounds. There are some F650 trucks out there that look similar with a 26K GVW that you don't need a CDL for though, so that might be a better choice. Thanks for watching!

Technically yes, for this 33,000 GVW Dump truck you would need a CDL to operate it at it's full capacity. There are F650s and some F750s that are 26,000 GVW in which you would not need a CDL. Fortunately for me I was obsessed with the idea of getting my CDL right as I turned 18 so I got it way back when. I've always been glad to have it.

I'm glad you asked Ben. I don't see too many people using these but I have been around them since the late 90's. They are great and I always prefer them to the more common fiberglass telescoping pole. It's called a "lenker rod", or some people call them a "Direct Reading" laser rod. You can move the tape inside the rod up and down and set grade, then slide the receiver up and down to get a reading and it works great when you're dealing with lots of cut and fill. I am not an expert but they say gravel is not a good material to cover culvert. It should be something that resist water goes past culvert inlet.

Glen, you've got a good point. Gravel wouldn't be my first choice either and this is an opportunity for me make a distinction between gravel and crushed limestone. Around here, the term "gravel" refers to stones that are harvested from a pit in the ground and sorted by size. These are usually round rocks found in sandy glacial deposits and when sorted out by size they will not pack together, but rather allow water and air to penetrate between the spaces of the individual stones (sometimes referred to as "river rock"). You're right that this would not be a good choice to backfill a culvert pipe. However, what I used on this culvert job was crushed limestone from a mined quarry and it contained a great deal of the limestone powder mixed in with the various sizes of crushed aggregate. This powder mixed in allows the material to pack together tightly and have nearly no spacing between the individual aggregates. While not completely impervious, it does do a good job of holding back most of the water over short holding periods and more importantly it provides a nice stable pipe bed to hold up the heavy equipment that will be using this entrance. Thanks! Yes, I agree that the music in this one was a little abrasive. I was still trying to figure out how to make the videos and while I still have a lot to learn, I try to do it a little differently now. Give one of my newer videos a chance and see if they're any better. Just remember the time lapse and drone shots don't have any sounds so I usually try to fill with something but more recently I've been using some of the machine sound underneath those shots too. I generally appreciate the honest feedback so let me know how I can improve. Thanks for watching!
