On the third day of our quick Spring Break 2022 road trip, we stopped at the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park for our first ever visit. Straddled on the borders of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, you can almost hear the whispers of historic figures blowing through the leaves of the forest in these Cumberland Mountains, as this was the route for early American pioneers to cross the Appalachian Mountains heading west. The Cumberland Gap was used by wildlife such as woodland bison, ancient peoples such as the Cherokee and Shawnee, and hunters such as Daniel Boone, who ultimately blazed the trail that led to western expansion. All this, and then Civil War soldiers from both the Union and Confederacy that fought to control this gap and the flow of wartime supplies! We hiked the gap, to Tri-state Peak, and Pinnacles Overlook.
