Cumbres Toltec Railroad

Our last big adventure day for our Big Haul 2020 led us to the famous Cumbres & Tultec Railroad. This was a Birthday gift from Abby, even she even got us the Parlor Car seats! This is a wonderful and beautiful train ride that leaves Antonito Colorado and hugs and crosses the border of New Mexico many time during the ride. You end up in Osier Colorado which is about the half way point between Antonito and Chama. In Osier they feed you a nice and wholesome lunch before turning the train around and taking you back to Antonito. We took this during a beautiful time and got to see the fall color change in the mountains. We had a lot of fun and would recommend this to everyone. They also provide train rides from Chama New Mexico up to Osier and back.

Wow! The beautiful golden color as far s you can see from those Maple Trees on that ride. Just amazing! Just imagine being able to cross the country on a train? Americans just don't know what they are missing by not having a modern high speed train system.

Best train I've seen in awhile. The engineer was very good with the steam whistle. Darn nice inside the cars and the lunch hut was looking real sweet. Thanks for sharing the views RIDER !

That train ride reminded me of old west cowboy movies with beautiful, wide-open and big land, except your video is more colorful and interesting. You sure picked the right time of year to visit because of the fall colors.

Their recently restored D&RG loco 168 did appear in a 1930s western and now more recently she can be seen in the trailer for the Netflix movie, The Harder They Fall where, as in her 1930s film, she gets held up again.

You need to ride from Chama, the climb up the hill to Cumbres Pass makes the engine work so you get some pretty good stack talk. Looks like you may have hit the peak Aspen leaves. Georgeous! I always hit the lounge car. No ankle biters screaming and adult beverages. Even get to hang out on the rear balcony. Worth the price every time!

Glad you got to take this train and see this area in full fall colors. If you ever make it back here, be sure to take the full trip between Chama and Antonito. My dad ran the store across from the station in Chama many years ago when we were kids. At 17:58, that road on the south side of the tracks goes back into NM and a branch of it leads to a friend's mountain ranch.

Absolutely wonderful video. Glad you could do it. In 1991 we rode C&TS between Chama and Osier behind double-headed locomotives 487 and 489. We saw 488 at the engine house in Chama on our way out of town. So glad to see it still in operation on your train. Highly recommend the Chama to Osier portion of the route as well.

You guys seem to really like trains. If you're ever vacationing/traveling along the East Coast I highly recommend you make a stop in Jim Thorpe, PA. They have a steam engine very similar to Cumbres/Toltec that runs every weekend, lots of hiking/biking trails, and a bunch of museums devoted to the coal mining industry from the early 1900's. There's also a few actual coal mines you can tour.

We have ridden both C+T and Durango trains , both were awesome. There is some awesome scenery on the ride on into Chama however the last stretch there is a lot of down hill brake squealing and smoke , I wondered why so many folks were getting on the bus at Cumbres pass instead of riding in to Chama. Ha! The drive between Antonito and Chama has a lot of the scenery that y'all missed. The day we were in Osier for lunch there wasn't much left for seconds , barely enough for firsts , the place was packed! Good food though!

Did this last September from Chama to Osier. That’s half way and you have cafeteria style lunch which as good. You can do the full route to CO but the half day trip was plenty!!!

Hi Adam & Abby, Another great video! Looks like you were just slightly too late for the peak of the fall colors. Even so, it was quite pretty. At about 9:40 Abby repeats what your docent told her. It's actually a bit better than what she told you. Just before mile marker 296 it is possible for the locomotive and the end of the train to be in New Mexico and the middle of the train in Colorado. There is a similar opportunity between mile markers 289 and 290, depending on the length of the train. I can tell you, you two will have to return to Colorado and do the other side, from Ozier to Antonito. Both are spectacular, just different. Two possibilities: do it one day and return by bus, or do it in two days and spend the night in either Chama or Antonito, depending on where you start. Great video, a couple of things to point out from a railroaders perspective, the guy shoveling the coal is the locomotive fireman sits on the left side of the engine aptly called the fireman’s side of the train., (the fireman is not the conductor.) the engineer sits on the right side of the locomotive cab aptly called the engineers side and operates the train. The conductor is the boss of the entire train, they collect tickets and are in charge of the operation of the entire train. The engineer can’t move the train without the conductors permission. Hope this helps!

Normally you have a choice, from either Antonito or Chama you can ride to the mid-station and back or ride all the way and bus back. Maybe because New Mexico is so unwelcoming to visitors now, riders from the Colorado side are not given the option of going to Chama, NM. I've only ridden from Chama to the mid-station and back. This is the first I've seen of the Antonito side, thank you.

Antonito to Cumbres Pass is all up grade at about 1.5%. Osier is about half way so on most operating days there is a train from Antonito and a train from Chama that get to Osier about the same time but the locomotives swap the trains instead of turning them. Chama to Cumbres Pass is 1.7% to Lobato Trestle then 4% to the Pass then down 1.5% to Osier. There is not much difference in elevation between Chama and Antonito but Cumbres Pass is a little over 10,000 feet. Antonito to Durango was built in 1880. Y'all need to make another trip to ride the whole line. Osier is accessed by auto with 4 WD. For end to end trips, a bus takes you back to the starting point.

Correction, as I shown in the video, they didn’t swap trains. They use the loop on the east side of Osier to turn the entire trains around. The Chama train left just as we got near town.

Love the Cumbres and Toltec! Too bad you didn't get to do the whole thing. The lower portion is really scenic. And if you leave from Chama, there is a 4 percent grade that makes the locomotive struggle, makes more smoke. Give you a reason to go back.
