Our mothers failed twice & at 96,000 miles BOTH head gaskets were shot & body was peeling apart like an orange. The brothers survived his teenage son racing people at 100 mph many times before he turned it upside down & once righted the engine still managed to start & run! Albeit very smoky for several minutes & rough idling.

Yes GM *kind of* put different heads on the Olds 350 to make a Diesel. However there were lots more changes that made it happen. The blocks were beefed up a lot. So much in fact that a scrap Olds D/DX block can be turned into a max effort gas engine with a bit of machining and stay together at almost any power level the rotating assembly can handle. The problem at the time was not that they "converted" a gas engine. It was issues with the fuel system and gasket technology. The problems they had back then are so easy to solve these days. Cummins does have CNG engines on the road already. They are "converted" engines but they are going the other way. Cylinder pressures are much much lower on a spark ignition engine vs a diesel. The castings and forgings that make up the engine can certianly handle the work load. All they have to get right is the fuel/air delivery system.

It will be really cool to see Cummins' version of a gasoline engine. Since the gummint started mandating DPF, EGR, and SCR on diesel engines they have become more expensive to buy and operate. Fuel economy has decreased to the point where a heavy duty turbocharged GDI gasoline engine would be competitive. If a gasoline engine could achieve fuel economy that is within ~10% of modern diesels, the lower pump price of gasoline (87 octane) would lower operators' overall fuel cost. And the engine would be cheaper to manufacture owing to lower fuel system cost(3000 psi GDI system vs 30,000 psi CR), and no DPF, SCR, and EGR systems. Then the owner would not have the high maintenance costs associated with those systems in the field.

Diesel engine has a higher compression ratio, too high for pump gas. Therefore they change the head design, lower the compression, change aftertratment system, computer parameters, change injectors and fuel system and now you can run gasoline. It's not as simple as just pouring gas into a unchanged engine. Gasoline will destroy a diesel fuel system, high pressure pump filters , o rings etc. It's not as simple as explained in this video.

Calling it fuel agnostic is 99% marketing. You don't order a generic engine and then run whatever fuel you want the first time. You'd order a gasoline engine, natural gas engine, diesel engine, etc. They'd all be based on the same 6.7l platform, but very much built for the specific fuel you ordered. If you order a diesel engine and put gasoline in it the first time, it'll cause just as much damage as doing that to any other diesel engine. You might be able to get something that's gasoline/propane dual fuel, but it'd be a similar conversion or multi-fuel setup as existing dual fuel engines that can do that.

The regulations in reality are more harsh the the environment, cuz of having to make more parts to meet emissions requirements. Plus the fact that there’s no EPA regulations on cargo ships that run on crude oil, & the military that does not abide by the EPA at all. Planes done have any of it, & neither do trains! Trains don’t have a DPF yet each Locomotive burns 4000 gallons of fuel per week! So each train you pass at a railroad track with 3 Locomotives is burning close to 12,000 gallons of diesel per week!
