Buy yourself an assortment of wobble sockets, and wobble extensions. Makes life a whole lot easier. 🤔

Removing the original starter from a 2016 prostar was rough. The bolts were seized. The starter can be removed by lifting the front end and dropping it straight down, behind the metal frame brace connecting to the other frame rail underneath the engine. It can not be removed out the front because of the wiring harness. Remove the inner fender and the outer panel covering the fuel tank for easy access. The brackets connected to the oil pan that holds the wiring harness needs to be removed also to make room for the starter to be dropped. The ground wire connecting the engine to the frame, located infont of the starter was removed on the engine side, just to make it easier. Be sure the replacement starter is a Mitsubishi. Its the only starter the will fit between the frame and engine block. I found that out the hard way. And the 5/8 socket needs to be a 12 point socket. A regular socket wil not fit over the bolt. Breaking loose the mounting bolts and keeping track of what wires go where will be the biggest obstacle. Great tip using a zip tie for the wires. Keep a cool head and just be patient and its achievable 👍.

I like you channel good to see owner operators like you are still out there. It may be be a good idea to put some anti corrosion treatment on all the terminals including the battery's. The shop I work at its a applied every PM we do. Cant tell you how many check engine lights I see that are just caused by voltage issues due to corrosion on the battery terminals. This is for all manufacturers. Can save you owner operators out there some money.

Starter probably not bad. It needs to have responded screws out back in as it needs mounting screws in to get ground connection to work. Probably whole reason starter won't work. I would fix and keep.It as a spare.

Also needs to put loctite on the bolts not ani seize! Starter bolts constantly back out.

Thanks for walking us through your repairs. I am not a mechanic but I would bet that the solenoid is grounded through it's mounting screws, therefore them being missing was probably the major fault with the starter system. Glad you got it fixed, keep on trucking.

Try the starter bolts on one that hasn't been removed before. Sounds like a 22 pistol going off when they break loose. You don't know if the bolt turned or broke, it pops so loud. Haggai seems to be some really good folks. Nice there is still good family shops.

Well since your oil is cooled by the coolant and will usually be about 10 degrees hotter than the coolant supplied from the radiator to the engine it is generally always very close to the 200 degrees your talking about. The engine manufacturers try to run the engines as hot as possible due to emissions standards they are the ones pushing systems beyond their tolerances- put a 180 degree stat in your engine - then the coolant going to your oil cooler will be around 165 to 170 degrees so your oil should run about 180 to 190. Then maybe ur Jake's will work right...maybe... the rule of thumb on heat exchangers Is a delta T of 10 degrees.... so the engine will add 10 degrees to the temp of the coolant from the radiator - the stat will be full open to the radiator at whatever your tstat rating is - and a properly operating radiator will dissipate 10 degrees of heat flowing through it... so knowing this will let you know when something is going sideways. Good instrumentation on a engine will let you diagnose most problems from the drivers seat. After working on really big diesels for longer than you are old - I'd put individual pryometers on each cylinder - it would save every serious engine failure due to some kind of injector failure. You can buy the systems that will alarm if the cylinder gets too hot or too cold - you can monitor the exhaust temp just out of each cylinder you can scroll through them and check the temps - what I would do is set the system to monitor the hottest hole - then you would know exactly what your engine is doing - as far as your voltage on your batteries goes that is one of the most important gages on your truck - with your system I'd want to see 14.25 volts or a little higher for a fully charged system when running with no big load on the system.

Maybe.... a suggestion....... tell us what the jobs/services would cost you if you didn't do the work. Show us what your saving by learning or be willing to service a truck like yours. Love that you do the work but what did it cost in fuel do to the extra idle time versus having someone put a new starter in while on the road. ???? Really enjoyed that as always. Just subscribed as I usually watch on our cable/Internet on the big screen. In regards to your eye...you probably already know this one...try using Vitamin E oil it will act as a catalyst. My dad got roofing tar in his eye and after all kinds of treatments at the hospital all of which didn't work...including using drips. They sent him home (we lived literally across the street from the hospital) while they tried to come up with solutions to get the tar out of his eye. We broke open Vitamin E and started soaking it into the tar/oil dirt and it broke it down. Later when I worked for Tremco making roofing tar, ( I had the fun job of pouring it into the forms, back bent over ) and got some on my hair. Everyone was betting that I would come back with a bald spot, nope just went home and broke open a ton of Vitamin E capsoles and a little patience and show'd up to work the next day with out a bald spot. Try it your self especially around the eye lid. Hope that helps.
