Those check valves are a very common problem with M11 and N14 Cummins, the fitting on the right side of the ecm fuel cooler has a check valve built into the fitting to keep the fuel prime, when the springs get old they don’t push against the seat of the valve causing the your fuel to drain back to your tank, prolonged starts, or even no starts. Detroit 12.7L had a similar idea, but they placed their check valve in the back of the head to keep fuel prime. I wouldn’t advise bypassing unless for emergency. the fuel cooler is essential for cooling the ecm from the heat of the engine.

@jacobking6966 Right side or left side? Everybody else I’ve seen referenced left side as in this video, do some have the check valve on the right side? I took my left side off and it’s just a fitting, no valve, maybe previous owner just put an elbow or do I need to check the right side as well?

My truck has a cumims N14 with the same fuel pressure problem, the system was discharged. Thanks to you and your video, I have solved this problem, which the mechanic recommended that I replace very expensive parts that had nothing to do with this problem.

my big trucks check valve was totally jammed...Too bad that I spent $1800 & still no results from 3 dealers service depts. None of them even came close to mentioning this valve...Shame on them taken advantage...thanku for info or I would still be stopped

thanks for the video. I have a 91 Peterbilt 378 with the N14 and high vacuum pressure while running. I had a problem with the truck losing prime and ran a hose from the filter direct to a fuel can and the high pressure went away. thank you for helping me narrow down what it most likely is.

I would have never known about the filter in the pump. I was going through filters cause I thought they were the reason why. But I did find lots of crap in my check valve. also. Thank you for your knowledge

Fyi- The re route of the fuel lines is ok for an emergency. However the ecm relies on diesel flowing through the cooler plate to cool the ecm. To permanently by pass it..not recommended.

In the video I rerouted the fuel line just to get home till I found the problem, if continued to drive with out the diesel cooling the ecm it will end up overheating the ECM and will end up costing $1,000.00 replace plus tow. I'll post another video how I reroute the computer (ecm) and I'm using a separate cooler to keep the ecm nice and cool .

Check the fuel line from the diesel tank nearest to the exhaust pipe if ur still having problems. Ours was cracked and would drain the line from the coolant exchanger whenever down. The truck would start with full tanks but once the level got down to 1/2 the path of last resistance was thru the broken line from the frame to the tee connecting the other tank

I wouldn't recommend bypassing the computer as the diesel cools it.. A way you could check flow thru it is remove the big fuel filter then go to the coolant diesel heat exchanger and take the fuel outlet off and blow on it.. Should be relatively easy to remove gas

I'm having some of the same issues missing at low rpm only under a load. I also have a issue if it rains the truck will cut off and you have to put a hot wire on the fuel solenoid to get it running. We have tried for a week to figure it out. Also SOMETHING Weird If You Hold It On THE Floor It Will Turn 1400 Rpm As It Suppose to. If you give it 20 seconds or so it will start jumping then bam it tacks out which its not suppose to do sitting still. I by passed my plate about a month ago not knowing about check valve. I'll fix that asap. But I need help on the other issue. The ran deal throws me off

Check voltage to fuel shutoff solenoid, if voltage too low or no voltage = no start It's $80 or so , I'd change it if it's old

Also , when crancking, what your tachometer look like, shows 0 or 100-200 rpm ? If 0 - check power supply and ground wires to the ECM , check wires to your engine positioning sensor. If 100- 200 rpm on tach change fuel shutoff solenoid and check voltage

Hey man, u won't believe it but after i spent about $3500 on this truck and it still had the same problem . The dealer said to change the throttle, same problem then they said to change the tps and idle validation switch then it works, after all it was the validation switch,

My N14 had a straight nipple in it instead of the elbow nipple but it was still the same check valve mentioned in this video. It is located in the same position as this video shows. If your filter is sucked dry when it starts and then dies, then this is most likely the issue. It is a very easy fix and will save a lot of money by doing it yourself. If you change your filter and still is starving for problems then this check valve and the screen in the pump could be your problem.

Call Michigan turbo ask for jay...ask for a quick spool turbo...cost about 12 hundred or less if you have a core...he machines it all himself...it added near 55-75 hp...insane difference but don't over rev...never go over 22 hundred...major difference..night and day difference call him

The strainer can be easily cleaned with either. When metal shavings are found here , it is a sign of fuel pump failure or soon failure .

Just do like the previous owner of my T800 did. Just disconnect everything that doesn't work. My truck when new came with every bell and whistle option they had, but when I got it was running on bare minimal anything. 100+ hours into it and I have about half of the stuff working now.

No , the red solenoid only shuts the fuel off and on, remove the diesel filter and if its half way empty fill it up with clean diesel and reinstall,make sure no dirt falls in and try to crank the truck, if it starts easier you have a problem with fuel draining back to the tank as the truck is shot off for a while.also what kind of truck do you have? example mine is a 98 Kenworth t800 with the N14 and i have an single 150 gallon tank on the passenger side and the main fuel line (supply line) that screws on the tank sometimes gets loose and that will cause to pull air instead of fuel from the pipe that goes all the way to the bottom of the tank, this can also cause random stall or shut down while driving and it needs to be cranked for over a minute to fill the diesel filter back up.

The reason why i bypass the check valve and the cooling plate that's behind the ECM is because i'm running different types of fuel and it has to be very worm in order to burn right and if its very worm it not good for the ECM , now i bypass the ECM and i also ran different lines to the ecm using a small radiator with an electric motor to keep the ECM cool (i'm using entifreeze in the new cooling plate) , do NOT bypass the ECM plate cooler with out cooling the plate cause eventually it will burn up the ECM and will cost you tow plus 1000 dollars for a new ECM.

Herbert Stephens Did you replace the small diesel filter thats in front of the fuel pump?? its a very small filter about 1 inch and thats there in case when installing the regular diesel filter and small dirt went in the mini filter will catch anything that passes the big filter this way it wont end up in the injectors.

Jehu Rodriguez update i replaced that check valve. my truck is still stalling and doesnt start untill i add more diesel to the fuel filter. I checked the cam sensor and its good. I also have a new fuel pump installed

I removed my check valve and never had a problem but then again all my fuel lines are costum for dual tanks since I use alternative fuel. remember if your fuel lines are more then 15 years old must be replace to prevent air getting in your fuel do to cracked lines.

Jehu Rodriguez Change the old diesel fuel lines, most likely you are getting air on the main feed line that goes from the tank to the pump, before you do this check the connection that's on top of the tank, i had a leak right where it connects and would give me random stall and couldn't start till I filled the diesel filter back up .

I am having problems with my N14. I couldn’t start the truck it was turning but just wouldn’t start, so I used starting fluid and started right up. Mechanic cleared fuel lines and pump filter and was fine for 3 weeks. But again I’m having problems its turning and won’t start up without starting fluid, I am arguing with mechanic just to replace fuel pump and keep telling me they have to check for something else before they replace fuel pump Any help would be really appreciated Thank you

ok,they sent me another ecm ,install it drives fine, now four way flasher won't operate when ignition switch is on the on position, also when the head lamps switch turn on the radio and fuel gauge turn to on . This morning the driver was going to work and the stop engine light came on , no acceleration, darn.

Sounds like you might have a harness issue. after 10 -15 years harness is recommended to be replace, that's my next project if I start having issues.

Anderson E Rockefeller , I don't have a fuel pressure gauge, but my problem it's that the truck feels like is chocking when I shift gears and hit the gas pedal. I had no issues until I washed out the engine. What do you think , I though about the harness, but I said I better ask before spending 1000$ Thanks

you sound like a man who may be able to give me an idea on a problem with a n14 in a farm tractor. early n14 eng#11794334, man date 12-95. 425 horse. when im running thru the field pulling a plow of some sort it will change rpm's on me. I do most of my pulling at 1700rpm, out of no where the rpm's will drop to say 1500, almost like I changed the throttle, then out of nowhere i a completely random time frame the rpms will return to normal, or if I had moved the throttle to bring the rpms back to 1700 they will jump to say 1900. its done this for awhile and I can find no pattern. I checked the tps and it seems to be fine, but who knows what happens when working?? could this be a pump issue? the motor runs fine for the most part. good power, normal fuel consumption, doesn't miss at all. she is a lil cold blooded, but so are my big cam II's and III's. Any ideas?

Raise the gas paddle up and make sure the wires are not pinched underneath the pedal (spring), I had this problem before where the wires were pinched and would get random RPM raise and then random stalls ( engine would die )

thanks . I found a similar check valve and screen in a payloader . No one fix. Dealer gave up. Any engine that is hard to start I put an outboard motor fuel line primer ball between tank and pump. I prime until ball is hard. Motors fire right up. Mack E7 has same issue. Check valve leak back to tank. Thank You

darn i can't believe it.i had the ECM rebuilt thinking all the problems would be solved, after that the #5 injector stop working, we replace it, now again, #5 stop working again ,we switch #5 to #6 ,it works, but we have to run it for a day. I have a feeling that the ecm wasn't rebuild right

Rght about now would be nice to use a diagnostic scanner to pinpoint the problem because you could have a bad harness, could be the plug from the harness that goes inside the cylinder head that conects to the injector...I mean it could be Endless problems but it needs to be narrow down so you don't sink all this money in her.

my next step is to check the pick up tube. we replace an injector, I have a feeling that the mechanic didn't adjust it right or something came loose, cause there's a knocking in the rocker box.

Knocking or tapping like a lifter tapping? when I did an injector and removed lifters, rocker arms and engine brake i put it all back with out adjust nothing. since my problem was a bad injector.

To bypass you simply pull out whats inside that T ( check valve) and the diesel will flow with no restriction.

Ok my truck will start up but once I cut it off it wont start back something keep emptying my filter

I"m sorry but that 90 degree that i showed in the video is not a T, its a 90 degree check valve and the reason for that check valve or (90 degree) is to stop the diesel for going back in the tank, i'm assuming the check valve don't work and stays open at all time so when you shot off the truck the diesel rushes back in the diesel tank, now if the check valve was working properly it wouldn't allow the diesel to go back in the tank which would keep your diesel filter full.
