If you have any questions or comments about what we are doing - make them. Blaine tries to answer every one of them over coffee in the morning. It's kinda his thing and I personally think he enjoys it! So please keep him happy and make a comment.

Frustrating indeed! We love Steveston although it would be great if we didn't have to do boatyard stuff while we were here. Thanks for watching!

The windlass went in just before Xmas 2023. I think we covered it on episode 137 or somewhere around there.

First time watcher, interesting video. The location of the props and rudders -- quite far forward of the stern -- made it appear that the boat was significantly lengthened at some point. That is further indicated by an unusually long cockpit aft. What was the purpose of such a long hull extension/cockpit? I'll try to watch some earlier videos to learn more about the history of Tangaroa if I have time.

Thanks for watching! From the info we have gathered the 11' extension was done some time in the 80's. It was a bit odd to get used to at first but we love it now. I am not sure what the driving force was to install it but it adds a ton of storage for starters. The main benefit is there is a 1200 gallon diesel tank built into it as well as a 500 gallon water tank. That is a huge increase in range for us. The third benefit with I am not sure the extent of is an increased waterline length which theoretically increases the hull speed to an extent. The rudder position definitely has a negative effect on steerage though! Take care.

Hope the project is going well. I'll have to check out the Steveston boatyard for my next haul out, last time I was at Shelter Island. It wasn't bad, but cost me pretty much the same as you guys and I'm a 43' boat. Are those active stabilizers on Tangaroa? Also, are you planning to stick with the 4 bladed props on the new engines? Going from a V12 to an inline 6 seems like a pretty big change.

So far so good. Its just slow going. Have a lot of stuff that needs doing. Shelter Island would be nice in some ways with proximity to supplies but Steveston is far more pleasant and considerably cheaper. We do have active stabilizers onboard however they have not worked since we have owned the boat. Basically the whole control system needs to be revamped. Its on my list. We are keeping the existing propellers as they seem to be almost perfect for the application. Switching to the Cummins engines gave us an extra 900 usable RPM. With the additional engine speed we were able to get transmissions with 3:1 reduction vs the original 2:1 which makes up for the loss of torque with the new engines. The shaft torque ends up being very similar in the end. Take care!

@@OnboardTangaroa These things always take longer than expected. You have the engines out and the bilge cleaned now, correct? I forget if you mentioned this before, but what are the plans for the old Detroit Diesels? Are they 2 stroke engines? Steveston is definitely more pleasant for the people on the boat, although Shelter Island cannot be beat for parts shopping. I'll have to check out the yard next time I'm down there. I'll be interested to hear how Tangaroa handles once you get the active stabs working, should come in handy during some of those open crossings. Glad to hear the props and shafts can stay untouched, keeps your workload a lot lighter and the prices down. Keep up the good work!

We do indeed have the old engines out and bilge cleaned. At this point I actually have the new engines in the engine room and one of them is mounted. Working on the second one. We are hoping to sell the old Detroits but no bites yet. They are the 12v-71 two strokes. I am looking forward to seeing how the stabilizers work as well. I am actually a bit dubious that they will be all that great as they are fairly small fins in the world of stabilizers and our cruise speed is only 9 knots. There may not be a lot of force there for anything more than minimal seas. They will do something anyway. We were pretty stoked about the props and shafts as well. The sea trial will hopefully go well with no need to re-pitch. Would be nice to not have to come out of the water again.

@@OnboardTangaroa Wow, you're making pretty good progress. Let me know if you guys ever need an extra set of hands with the install. I've always been interested in what goes into a repower, although yours is certainly a more mammoth one than most. It'll be interesting to see if the 12v-71's find a new home. I wish they would fit in my boat, but at 41', I don't think they're quite the right choice, haha. I'll probably end up going volvo or maybe cummins if I can afford it when the time comes to give up the 454's.

Thanks for the offer! No, seeing as the two engines together are probably 9000 lbs they may be a bit much 🤣

Was it me or I did not see any anodes on that boat?
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 ай бұрын
Lots of anodes and still in perfect condition. There are 4 on each shaft, one very large one welded just behind the props to the bottom of the hull, and two medium sized weld ons on each side of the keel spaced from front to rear. I also have a hull potential meter in the engine room so I can monitor everything. Thanks for watching!

Yes indeed. From info we can find this was done in Mexico sometime in the 80's. It took us a little getting used to but we love it now. It holds an extra 1200 gallons of fuel and around 600 gallons of water. Its a much welcome addition. Thanks for watching!
