The ram doesnt have more grunt down low. 1000lbft is less than 1050lbft. All three diesels have the peak torque @1600rpm. The ford is the fastest because the torque is what is doing the work and it has more torque from 1600 to 2800. Which all three trucks hp ratings are @ 2800. The reason the GM with less peak torque beats the Ram(910 VS 1000) it's the gearing advantage. At the hp ratings the ford has the most leverage 475hp@2800 = 890lbft 445hp@2800 = 835lbft 400hp@2800 = 750lbft Now the reason people feel that the Ram has the most torque, is called torque rise. It's the fact that torque is doing the work. As the rpms fall the ram has a larger difference in torque(ability to do the work) so it keeps pulling "harder". What most people(almost all people) fail to understand is what hp actually is. It's just a rating of how fast work gets done. NOT HOW MUCH!!!! All three trucks did the same work 30k trailer, bit the slowest was the lowest Rated HP truck(just like 90% of the tests in the past) the strength is in the torque, and the torque is the limitation on how much work can be done. The torque can be manipulated, not the hp. That's why the GM in First gear has 445hp at 2800 and 14400lbft@1600(910lbft x 4.64:1 x 3.42:1 =14400lbft) but not 7061hp at 2800 in first. Hp is a rating and torque is the force doing the work. The simple way to explain this is here 3.5EB 450hp@5000=451lbft 6.7 powerstroke(2018-19) 450hp@2800=844lbft 8.9L Cummins ISX 9 450hp@2200=1074lbft 12.7L Detroit Series 60 450hp@1900=1243lbft 14.8L Cummins ISX15 450hp@1600=1477lbft All 5 engines are rated the same power but on their own at their rated power(without gear manipulation) they all could do the same amount of work just at sized loads(ISX15 would be 3.27 time heavier than the 3.5EB) and vise-versain order for the EB to move the load the cummins does it would need a 3.27:1 gear reduction box before the transmission, hp doesnt change with gearing because it's a CALCULATION. My volvo D13 is rated 500hp@1700rpm/1850lbft@11-1350 but the torque band is where all the work is done Volvo D13 1850lbft@1100=387hp 1850lbft@1200=422hp 1850lbft@1300=457hp 1850lbft@1350=475hp 1800lbft@1400=479hp 1750lbft@1500=499hp 1650lbft@1600=502hp 1550lbft@1700=501hp 1400lbft@1800=475hp 1250lbft@1900=452hp The pattern in the data shows how the "rating" is a calculation. How can 200 lbft(1550 and 1750) be the same power at differen speeds. Because the engine can do that amount of work at a different rate of speed. The engine pulls a hill way better in a lower gear where there is more torque(because manipulation) 1850 is huge compared to 1200 and so is the 1200rpm vs 1900rpm. One is clearly more capable. If you were to have 1850lbft@1900rpm it would be 670hp you can get these D13s in marine applications with 1000hp@2400rpm(2188lbft) that's a vastly different engine than a truck engine

I think if people could see 3 charts of Torque & HP, what you're explaining is there is more "area under the curve" for the Ford, which is why it had the fastest time. i don't favor one brand over another; my dad is Ford for life - we pulled a trailer all over the US together & he LOVED catching other trucks on hills & outpolling them or die trying. My Father in-law drives a Cummins & that torque-rise you described is REAL. I really like how it feels when you drive it. Personally, I drive an L5P duramax and rarely pull but still find all this stuff fascinating.

@@jamms2966 I feel the ram will be more competitive with the 9 spd Allison or the 8 spd ZF trans Andre was talking about on tflnow yesterday. But the limitation will still be the 750lbft@2800(400hp) vs the Ford 890lbft@2800(475hp) on every hill. It will perform better than the GM especially in the lower and mid-band, where it already shines, even better with a 4.10 axle

Love y'all's videos and love how honest Mr.Truck is, you can tell he is not brand loyal, I agree with him about gauges and all the information you can get, I made a cross country trip last year towing heavy in my 2015 6.7 Ford powerstroke and when I got Yuma Arizona I hit a dust storm, shortly after I can feel the truck starting to lose power, I looked at my boost gauge and noticed it was only making 8 to 10 lb of boost and no engine light, pulled over and found the air filter was completely clogged with sand, cleaned the filter the best I could on the side of the road and the truck ran normal again and the boost was back up to 20, without a gauge it would have taken me longer to figure out what was happening, great video guys and kept up the good work!

People still hauled way over loaded back in the 90's. They didn't run 3.50 rear end gears. They were running 4.10 or lower. 30,000 pounds on a 1 ton truck is extremely heavy though. Most people hauling that much weight are not doing it with an f350 or 3500 ram or gm. They would probably have a 5500, f650, or a regular 18 wheeler.

I'm just saying, in every single head to head test I've ever seen the Cummins compared to the Powerstoke its always a couple of ticks behind, not that it really matters, these trucks are so grossly overpowered that it doesn't really matter which you buy, because it will tow good enough for you, and if won't you don't need a pickup, you need a semi.

For what its worth, to all the people who claim the ram/ Cummins is most reliable, let me share my observation on a trip last month from colorado to california up and over the rockies on the same highway this test was done on. And before anyone says im a fan boy, let me tell you now i dont own any of these trucks and dont care who won what, this is purely an observation over the 3,000 mile trip. I did not see 1 single ford or gm pulled off the road with the hood up. But i did see 3 Rams/Cummins pulled over with hoods up. And just for the hell of it, my wife and i started counting trucks just to see which brand had more on the road. My wife counted rams while i counted fords because that seemed like the closest race. But the number of fords on the road did in fact double the number of rams that we saw (we included half tons as well as 3/4 and one tons and even f450-f550 and 4500-5500's). I will say this, the 3 rams pulled over with hoods up did have large 5th wheels attached. And the number of trucks towing with big trailers between the two brands were close to the same even though there were twice as many fords total on the roads. So percentage wise more rams were towing, but there was 3 broken down (which we didnt count, only counted vehicles driving). Pure unbiased observation, and that is it. Say what you will

In November I went to Ford to order a new truck. I thought I was gonna order a F-350 SRW with the 7.3. I left Ford having ordered a F450 6.7 when I had to put a down payment on a truck I just couldn’t do it on the 7.3 was afraid that I won’t be happy with the gas engine after my last 3 trucks being diesel, I need more feed back from 7.3 owner. If Ford would have let me do a test tow with the 7.3 I may have bought one.

I think Ford's PCM programming is much better the other two seem to reduce boost for sustained WOT therefore reducing power output. Don't know about the GM but Ram was running around 20psi and the Ford was pushing 30psi. I think the Ford's computer takes ambient temp into account and since it was cold allowed for higher boost because the fan could easily reduce temp 10-20 degrees in a few seconds. Either way Ford ruled the day again, as they say the best never rests.

I would definitely like to see this test done in the Summer when its in the 90s. If the Ford can maintain that level of power output without getting hot, then it really is the 2020 king of the hill. And only time will tell, but given the partial redesign to Powerstroke, I wonder how the long term reliability will be? Overall, the 6.7 seems pretty solid, so I'm hoping they've really nailed it with the new hardware and increased hp. We'll know in about a year or two.

And the smaller cummins 6.7 spins higher. Love my volvo D13 only time if ever over 1800rpm is when you pull the max engine brake control at 53mph, drops from 12th to 9th gear and hits 2250rpm. Pulling she never crosses 1800.

@@jnk26 nah they will run 3100 all day long, I would set the cruise up hills in 3rd running 75 to hold hills never a problem, on the contrary you have to absolutely whip a V8 to pull a hill that the Cummins will hold more easily in a situation where you are just trying to maintain speed uphill, flat out acceleration from a stop loaded the v8s win and it's meaningless
@jnk26
@jnk26 4 жыл бұрын
@@doddgarger6806 Dodd Garger well everyone boasts about the Cummins low end grunt, why would you want to spin the poor thing above the peak hp of 2800? Seems like it's a smart thing to do to a $10-15k engine. Let me guess it will last a million miles at 3100rpm as well? I know for a fact that 13 litre engine that are beat on(hot rodded) dont make 750k, let alone a million. On other points, I seem to know what in talking about and an engine that has more hp at said rpm will have more torque as well(be cause torque at rpm is horsepower) 400hp@2800rpm=750lbft of torque 475hp@2600rpm=959lbft of torque. Now this being stated the both the V8s have the high rpm advantage, more torque means there is more leverage to do the work. What I said about the Ram was I dont like the way it sounds at high rpm(I consider 2200 high rpm) because I spend 14-16 hours a day at 1300rpm, I have always disliked the sound of a small I6 engine(under 12L is small in the real world). It you look at it the Duramax@910lbft w/3.42 and the 10spd, is just as capable as the Cummins@1000lbft w/4.10 and the 6 speed. Given this is the gearing manipulating the torque. The GM is on par with the "better" Cummins. What you feel is called torque rise. As the engine lugs back the amount of leverage goes up(750lbft@2800 rises to 1000lbft@1800) the V8s dont have as dramatic torque rise(959lbft@2600 only rises to 1050@1600 in the Ford) so the gain of 250 lbft in the cummins gives you the illusion of better power. When ultimately the Ford and GM pull through it at the hp rating 445hp@2800=835lbft which is more that rams 400hp@2800=750lbft. Remember torque exists without hp but hp doesnt exist without torque, it's just and equation. If you truly believe that a less powerful, less torquey engine is stronger, fools on you. There is a reason the Ford beat the almost identically geared GM up the hill(140lbft at the bottom end, and 124lbft at the top end), by almost a minute and a half, the Ram just tied the GM with a considerable axle advantage 4.10 vs 3.42, and the deficit of gear manipulation(6spd vs 10spd)

I’m a little surprised that the trucks would only do 40mph uphill. I moved from South Carolina to Las Vegas, a 2,350 mile drive, in the biggest U-Haul (26ft) you can get. I was towing my 4,650lb Trailblazer on a 2k lb trailer, with 2 motorcycles (1,000lbs more) in the back. That all adds up to at least 7,650lbs, plus the fuel, fluids, and whatever I had thrown in my suv. The total cargo and towing was rated at 11,500, which I was damn close to... definitely over 11k pounds. Even going up the 8% inclines in New Mexico, the gas engine with 4spd auto would downshift to 2nd gear and I could still do 53-54mph with the gas smashed to the floor. On flat ground, or flatter, I was running that thing at 76-77. Speed limits were mostly 70 or 75. I found out it was limited to 78 lol. Either way, I would have been flying by these guys. I’ve been watching these videos since I’ll be buying a truck soon. They’re not making it easy with how expensive they are or how some of them just don’t fair too well. Any advice? Will be towing a 5th wheel (toy hauler) occasionally, maybe 3-4 times a year. I still have a lot to look into and research..

I’m not sure we can revive this thread but I’d like to ask you all a question. 1. If we limit the max speed to the speed limit going up the IKE is 60 mph, and we have the same final gear ratio, at what towing weight will the time to get up the hill diverge? So I can say w confidence at 15,000 lbs, all three trucks will end up at 8 minutes to go up the IKE. I think you could say the same at 20,000 lbs. At what weight do you think we will separate the time to go up? So my point is if that number is say 23-24000 lbs. How many will buy a truck to tow that heavy? What’s the percentage? So I’m and RVer and 95% of fifth wheels will be under 20,000lbs loaded. So for this application, every RVer should pay attention to payload, amenities, price, etc than engine specs. Because the work to be done will be done fairly equally for a majority of that application. So as an RVer with my DW on a trip, I try to be ultra reliable on the truck and the camper. I’m not driving long hours everyday and the miles I do drive will be mostly below 70 mph. Can anything be said about reliability of these three? Anyway any thoughts are appreciated!

I've tried BF Goodrich KO 2's and one other cheap no name tire that I can't remember which brand those were, and both of them got about the same mileage life span right around 32,000 miles before they were at the wear markers. I rotated them every 10,000 miles as well. I tow a 16' tandem axle enclosed cargo trailer with a gvwr of 7,000lbs daily. I'd really like a load range E AT tire that can go up to 40,000 towing if that's even possible.

You guys do a great job with the IKE Vids. I think the 30,000 lb haul would be very good for hot shot (CDL) drivers, and car haulers. There are not many Fifth Wheel Trailers that approach 30,000 lbs, but there are some in the upper 20k range. Most of those are pulled by Class 6 or better trucks. The average heavy Fifth Wheel Recreational trailer would be 18k to 22k GVW. I tow a 20,000 lb trailer with my 16 Ram with 110 gals fuel, and 4600lbs of pin weight. That puts me over the trucks GVW till I burn some fuel off. Also it bares noting that the Ford F450, with the bed has the same GVW as the F350 at 14,000 lbs. If I was pulling the IKE with my rig, I would be hand shifting the tranny and would be in 4th gear, rpms up at 60 mph and go from there. I tow in 5th gear, at 2150-2200 rpms. The 4:10 gears can’t handle the load in 6th and keeps hunting to fifth. Flat land towing in 6th results in 9.3 mpg. 5th gear is 10.4 mpg. Gets the load off the engine and is very close to a 4:30 ratio in 5th.

TexanUSMC8089 that’s because a 4.10 pulls better 🤨 a 3.55 in a truck is only better for highway mpg. And that’s if your empty. The 10 speed really helps make up for the high gearing but a 4.10 or 4.30 with a 10 speed will still pull easier. Just worse empty mpg

I think all of us could complain about each respected manufacturer until the end of time. Truth is each of these trucks are great. I personally own a ram 3500 HO cummins. I love it, but I'm not a fan boy. Could of easily been either of the three I don't care. So far it's been a fantastic truck. Could of easily been a nightmare too. But that can be said about all of them.

Major difference is that the Cummins can pull that load wide open for years none stop.. We use Cummins to water flood fields here in Louisiana and they run wide open for months on 500 gallon fuel tanks they change the oil when we refuel

You had mentioned the Chevy was bucking a bit more than normal, do you think it could be due to the placement of where Chevy moved the fifth wheel and goose neck location on the frame?

Love these raw videos. Thanks for sharing TFL. I know I don’t like hearing the fan on the cooling F-350. I counted 6 times thE fan came. It’s a good thing Andre didn’t have the sound meter because it could have measured pretty loud cabin noise.

Wish they would have done sound readings, especially when the fords fan kicked in. My company ‘19 f250 w/ 6.2 is loud inside. I think there’s sound canceling or something else going on because the voice recognition sucks at highway speeds.

The Ram seemed to do the best in my opinion. It did a perfect downhill run, and in the uphill run it did a smidge better then the GMC and a little slower then the Ford but it did the entire uphill run without any engine fan kicking in and all temps lower. It wasn’t working as hard as the other two. Try this test in July with hotter ambient temps and see how these 3 trucks compare then.

Engine fan would have kicked on you just didn't hear it. Also the way the Ford dissipate heat is different. All of the heat from the powertrain goes into the coolant. Everything is oil to water(engine oil, transmission) even the intercooler in air to water. So the reason the ford was "always" on was all the waste heat was rejected into the coolant. The Ram has engine oil to water cooler and the trans and charge air cooler are oil to air, and air to air respectively. So the heat rejection is different. It's a lot slower to dissipate massive amounts it's of heat once the components are hot. The Ford can dump the heat and maintain it better(albeit its warmer). Clearly most people dont understand how hard it is to make +40k lbs run up a hill at 40mph

I don't think the Ram or the GM was putting out maximum power. I think their computers reduce power for sustained WOT to maintain temps. Considering how close they are on paper they should've been closer in time. I think Ram and GM reduce prolong turbo boost to around 20 psi. Ford look like it was running around 30 psi turbo boost to deliver max HP and Torque, running hotter but using it's fan to stay cool. I like the Ford's programming better, it seems to account for ambient temperature. In cold temps allow for sustained high turbo boost because the fan can reduce temp 10-20 degrees in a few seconds. I bet in the summer the Ford will run the same reduced boost as the others.

These are my observations from your great footage. The GM and Ram had slower but smooth sustainable runs.... the Ford is the hot rod of the group, but the percentage of time the fan was cycling is very troubling considering the ambient temps. ,with loads like this cooling is more important than being the fastest. I’d like to see a rerun of this test on a hot summer 85-95 degree day. I don’t think the Ford has the cooling capacity to cool that 6.7 at maximum horsepower in the hot temps. The Ram has always had more than enough cooling , and the revision GM made shows they have addressed the cooling system with the new higher tow numbers. My only question is what’s going to happen to the Ford when it gets too hot? Will it de rate itself and reduce power to keep the engine from being damaged? I believe the Ram May be able to beat it on a hot august day,when the Ford starts out like a rabbit and can’t keep its cool, the Ram will eventually pass it.

John DiMartino thats the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard 😂 I tow very heavy with my f350 AND ITS TUNED and has more power than the 2020 truck. At 110 degrees it runs just fine and stays cool...

The fan kicking on is a tuning thing. It’s a preemptive strike to keep the engine cool when it sees temp rise over time. All the brands are tested in hot temperatures and do well.
@khakiswag
@khakiswag 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that the Ford may run slower in the summer by derating the power output to run cooler. But did you consider that the Ram and Silverado did a slower run because their computers may already be de rating to stay cool? The Ford's turbo was putting out almost double the boost of the Ram therefore running much hotter. It maybe better programming on Ford's part. In cold weather the algorithms probably allow hotter temps because in cold weather because simply engaging the fan can easily lower fluid temps 10-20 degrees in a few seconds. My guess would be in hot summer temps the Ford will be running the same lower boost as the Ram was running, around 20 psi.

My thoughts exactly. The chances of 99% of the population running with that much weight and that kind of a grade will alleviate the majority of that issue. Obviously all three platforms are capable of more torque but managing the temps has to be a big challenge. Gale Banks just hit 850 on the 'killing a dmax" series on a level only he or an OEM could accomplish

Silent but Deadly the other trucks didn’t even engage there fans in the run , the Fords ran a lot and it was freezing temps ... You don’t have a 2020 . Yours is probably deleted which reduces cooling system heat soaking , given how much that fan ran and the coolant temp was borderline (219?) that’s high , it’s going to get toasty in the heat of the summer ... obviously GM and Ram have more conservative tuning , there acceptable balance of engine life and output is different . I prefer the Ford , and like most others id never get it hot enough to worry I’d only get a single wheel truck I’d rather have the extra power and be able to lift as I see fit
