Notice the number of independents who are sick of both parties and want our own candidate. Most independents came from Democratic Party. It's for primary voting, and the rules are state by state. My state has open primaries, so there is no party affiliation. During the primary, I ask for the ballot for a party of my choosing (or a non-partisan ballot). States with closed primaries you have to register with a party (or unaffiliated). The rules to change party affiliation will vary state by state. Luckily, I've only lived in an open primary state.

They move the voting booth to areas with little to no public transportation. Where there is hot weather and no water, drink or shade source. This started under Obama and was worse under Trump. I never understood the rally size argument. If you are willing to stand in line three hours to attend a rally, you are obviously firmly committed to that candidate. In 2016 I gauged who was winning by election sign (I drive throughout the US extensively for work throughout the central states) and there were tons of Trump signs and very few Hillary signs, this year I am seeing very few signs for either candidate.

I don’t agree that most independents are either R or D. We are corralled to identify with a “side.” More and more people, I like to hope, are discovering this and dislike both “sides.” I am an independent who registered to vote at age 18 and has never voted. (age 45 now) Before, I didn’t feel I was informed enough to vote. I was too busy with the day to day, especially after becoming a mother at age 23. Now, I am more informed… and I still don’t vote because I’ve learned it really doesn’t matter. Both parties are merely two arms that lead to one body. Our government system was hijacked YEARS ago through lobbying and various financial campaign support (funneled through a myriad of organizations to thwart the donation limits) that once elected, is then expected to vote as is desired. If you look back, you can see how the same agenda (which puts more money and power in the hands of the elites, and is shrinking the middle class as a consequence) is unfolded, no matter what political party is in the White House or has the majority in Congress. Sure, little surface things that the corporate-owned media draws our attention to alter depending on the administration. But that is mostly for show, to keep us believing in the system and thinking our enemy is each other, and not all the fat cats at the top. (Don’t get me wrong, a tiered system is unavoidable and natural, despite good intentions, but within balance. Today it is disgustingly off balance. This happens in every great civilization in recorded human history, due to selfishness.) Much like how a magician uses the art of distraction to pull off illusions in front of our eyes. Trump and Biden/Harris… they’re all in on it. They play their roles. Good cop/bad cop, depending on perspective. The public is being manipulated on a mass scale and expected to fit in one little box or the other. And this happens to almost always be nearly evenly split? How convenient. We should not be so divided, but we are led to be, so we don’t unite in concert to dismantle this deep corruption. Fundamentally, we have more in common than not. But most of us have forgotten this. Media intentionally dehumanizes the other “side.” This is psychological warfare… no guns and physical force needed… Just be indoctrinated to think your votes still count through the democratic process and that we live in a constitutional republic. A caged animal will be unruly and hard to manage. But make the cage so big and comfortable enough that they are unaware they are still confined, and you have a better controlled environment with less effort. It is not easy to see the world we are accustomed to differently from how we were raised and indoctrinated to be. Politicians are all just the facade/puppets (if Biden in office doesn’t make that clear… what will?… this has nothing to do with my opinion on his policies; purely his cognitive state and cover-up they are pretending didn’t and isn’t occurring) for the true architects of our society. More people are waking up to this truth. However, technology has developed to a point that even if there was a mass awakening, we still might not stand a chance. I’m more akin to a CLASSICAL liberal, with personally conservative values, but am an atheist. I do not lean R or D. I see them for the tools they are. And I know I am not alone. Many are becoming disillusioned, which is why a network like NN has been created. Many people are getting tired of the skewed and biased reporting. I don’t trust this network anymore than the rest, but I do appreciate that every utterance isn’t an immediate insult to our intelligence. Though they still toe the line by keeping up the charade of a democratic system. Despite what I believe, I still find myself getting reeled in on occasion with the blatant misrepresentation and deceptive editing, so I understand the pull and difficulty to break away from the status quo. Though we like novelty, we also like routine, tradition and predictability. We want to trust what we’ve come to view as authoritative sources. This makes us vulnerable to being deceived on a massive scale. Sometimes the big lies are the easiest to hide in plain sight. Once we have been thoroughly conditioned, that is. The inception of compulsory public education was just one step in this generations long game. I see people on here staunchly supporting one side or the other… and they have no idea how much this makes them very much like each other. They believe what their side says about their own side and by default, eschew anything the other side represents. True debate and critical thinking are becoming extinct. As was the idea.

Voter registration is very important but voting rights and maintaining integrity at the ballot box. Remember Bush vs Gore. The Republicans stole the election - there was voter intimidation in many districts that were Democrats and CNN reported how ballot boxes in traditional black districts were not collected and remained uncounted. Those articles should be there in the archives if you do some investigative journalism. I went to bed seeing Al Gore leading in the polls with Florida the only state left to be counted and awoke to learn that George Bush had won and Florida was the deciding factor where his brother was the Governor. Imagine that! and when it was contested and taken to the Supreme Court, the Conservative majority ruled in favour of George Bush. Trump has already dropped “ Easter eggs” to let us know this is what is being planned. So Mr Cuomo research that and raise that alarm bell instead as this is the real danger. DT is just the mouth piece, the real damage is being done behind the scenes that isn’t being discussed.

Registering independent simply means there is no opportunity to vote in the primaries (in most states). The electoral system should be changed in many aspects, but, the main one is to allow ranked voting by ALL during presidential primaries, and the popular vote (not electoral) wins the general presidential race.

Voter registration for a certain party doesn't tell you anything since a lot of states have closed primaries that had people registering as the opposite party to vote in their primaries to try to choose their opponents, not the candidates they plan to vote for in the general election. The hopes in doing this is if the candidate you vote for in your party during the general election loses at least the candidate from the other side that wins is someone you at least find tolerable and not a candidate you find completely abhorrent. This was extremely prevalent in this years Republican primary with Democrats and Independents registering as Republicans to vote in the Republican primary for anyone other than Trump.

Agree 100% in regards to why I register no party. It doesn’t make sense to think i will vote X all of the time. How is it possible for one group to represent me throughout my life as the world changes. There isnt a republican or democrat. Political theory talks about why and how they operate. However, how a party should operate is not my problem. They figure it out just like how the smaller 3rd parties have to figure it out. In other words, if you vote one of the two major parties you are just part of an institution that has nothing to do with democracy. In regards to the two parties we assume party unity has something to do with democracy instead its how well they run the machine. What about policy? One major party will never unify itself. Impossible. Even my family isnt this unified. So in this election I have 3 choices Jill Stein, Republican or Democrat. Notice that the only party I mention by name is Jill Stein. The other two parties is about what is the policy. If you are going to peel away the confusion you have to remove the personality. Right now one of the two major parties has a plan- aka platform. As for Jill Stein she has to have a platform. As for her platform there are some things I dont really pay attention to. A 2 party system you call that last sentence your stance or what you support or oppose. I just dont like that last sentence. There is no way Jill Stein can complete everything in her platform and its the important part that I pay attention to. Lets say she is for medical care as a human right. That makes sense. However, that is a loaded task. She talks about reducing prescription drug prices as a step. There you go I will pay attention to that. A multiparty system helps us prevent the domination of one party. Incremental changes. Thank you Cuomo for the presentation

I wouldn't place too much emphasis on the 'independent' label. Studies show that even so called independents still reliably vote one way or the other. It's simply that there is so much social censure about political parties that many people choose this label.

True. Only a fraction of independents are actual swing voters. It amounts to about 10 % of all voters nation-wide, which makes the gap even smaller when only considering swing states - yet these few % usually get to tip the election in one direction or another. Most of the times those swing voters will vote for the candidate that they feel is closer to the center.

I am all for not overestimating polls and not underestimating registration, but I stay optimistic. Why? 1. Harris/Waltz campaign surged not only in polls, but also in fundraising and, even more importantly, number of volunteers. Democrats now have much better infrastructure - field offices, volunteers, money - to actually step up registration. 2. July registration numbers sounds bleak, but they are telling nothing about current state of campaigns. Lets back to them in September and November. 3. We cannot know for sure, but it seems that Harris/Waltz are getting independents on their side. 4. Election results will be heavily impacted by real turnout. If Democrats keep at least similar level of excitement as today, and Republicans will stay in their current mood of doom and gloom, it can be decisive. 5. What was pointed out, not everybody registred as Republican will vote for Trump. There is a movement called Republicans for Harris, but no movement Democrats for Trump.

Key thing to point out...its either going to be 2016 and people vote based on how they feel economically and if the Border is an issue for those voters in Arizona and Nevada ....or if the War in the Middle East still plays a role for voters in Michigan....or it will be 2020/22 where Abortion is an issue that pushes Dem voters in states like Penns or if Georgia decides to split their votes like they did with Kemp and the Senate races. In the end, this election will be extremely close a'la Bush v Gore kind of settings.
