I have been wanting to travel to Japan for a loooong time, but the language barrier is what is keeping me. I have seen a few videos showing how you can order food without speaking the language (yay for pictures)! But how do you find out what is in things if you are on a special diet? Well, I am not too special but I do not eat meat. I know how to recognize tofu, but I always wonder about sauces and such.
@DonsShed
@DonsShed 6 жыл бұрын
I've been to japan twice and you definitely DON'T need to speak the language. I would take pictures (in your phone) of things you can't eat and confirm with the restaurant before ordering. Otherwise the Google Translate App is great for translating stuff. Don't hesitate anymore, just do it!!! Good Luck and Enjoy!!! :)

Thanks! Excellent idea with the pictures!

It is a bit difficult at first, but you will get used to it pretty quick. Especially in the main tourist areas they will be used to people not speaking Japanese. Be careful because a lot of products that don't appear to be meat dishes, will include products such as stocks derived from meat, fish, shellfish etc. Dashi for example is a standard cooking ingredient in many foods. Vegetarianism isn't as big in Japan as in western countries. You might have to search out vegetarian options online - depending on how strict you are. Also if you don't consume alcohol that is a problem too, because sake and mirin are also standard ingredients.

Tiger's Eye ...no worry on that, most speak smattering English, in fact in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka most speak good English. And Japanese are very friendly and helpful. Just came back from a 10-day on my own there.
@kaemincha
@kaemincha 6 жыл бұрын
Tiger's Eye It is SO easy to get around without knowing the language. Employees at pretty much anywhere are super helpful. We went into FamilyMart plenty of times to ask for directions lol. Id say you need to know maybe 5 phrases just to get your point across and then they will be happy to answer in their best english or by pointing things out for you. A McDonalds employee left her register to show me out on the street which way to go, super nice. And if you are lost, google translate can go a long way.
