If there was one person I trust to pour whisky multiple times without spilling, it would definitely be Dutch, I have never thought

A couple of thoughts, from an old guy. That old GM would have been run by a different Master Distiller and Blender (with different personal biases) and as you noted also run on the old stills, making up some of the difference. But the other difference is back in the 80's & 90's there weren't whisky nerds with internet based global buying reach, which meant they sold far fewer bottles, of any single malt. All of the Distilleries sent more of their product (as a percentage) to Blenders, which meant only their best barrels got their own labels. Today they keep more of the (relatively) mediocre barrels, to extend their own production. Single Malt just wasn't a thing until the mid-late 90's, and even then it was only 4-6 distilleries that got any recognition at all. That is also why old guys like me dearly miss some of the classic blends. They were made with much better feed stock than the current ones.

Great job uncorking and filtering that old Glenmorangie 18 Dutch. Also enjoyed behind the scenes kitchen. Wish I could try it!

Don't forget, the older 18 also could have older juice in it. 18 is just the age of the youngest. So the blend could be different.

My sister gave me a bottle of Glenvite 18 for Christmas 1993. I opened it up in 2016 when the Cubs won the world series. My cork broke also. That was the most fantastic drink ever! I wish I still had it.

Used this video as an excuse to crack open my 18 for the first time (new bottling obviously) and now I can't help but wonder what I'm missing. Thanks for "ruining" such a great dram! Cheers gents

Over here in the EU, Glemorangie 18 is one of the more reasonably priced 18 year olds. - usually only a little more than the glenfiddich & glenlivet 18's. For it's price, i'm not gonna be sad that there's an older version with perhaps more quality out there somewhere. The utility in this video - look out for old bottles sometimes! They càn be better, and even if they're not, you're gonna learn something about the distillery.

That's some great comparison! Nice job! Have you ever thought of comparing old style 12 year VS modern 15&18 - how it's gonna stand? Would be great as an experiment!

Awesome video guys...Just confirmed my own finding that Hibiki 21 tastes like Glenmo 18 and maybe a bit of Signet....So Glenmo is a good way to experience Hibiki....Are you guys around SD on Oct 15th weekend?

This was exciting to watch!! I want to taste the “old” 18 so badly. It’s almost $1K on every site. It sure would be nice if you did vlog on “formulas,” with precise measurements, for three of the best tasting, cost prohibitive, and inaccessible pours. Oh! And why don’t you include Delightful Dillon’s concoction for this one. I bet it will go viral and across channels as a challenge … you’re welcome! Love you three!

It is the quality of the casks, today they are 2nd, 3rd or more refill casks. Back in the 90's they would have been 1st fill. In order to meet the demand and make more money, quality suffered, that is it.

I’d really like a Glenmorangie drink through. I’ve had the 14yo Quinta Ruban(absolutely loved it) and now the 18 year old. I really like both. All Glenmorangies different double casks would make a very interesting drink through.

S**t. I think I actually had a bottle of that back in the 90's. Didn't expect that the juice would change that much over time, but I was a naive young'un back then.

I think I recall Dillon mentioning that he had one of the Glenmorangie vintages on a podcast episode. Does he think that those are closer in experience? I know that they are insanely expensive (closer to $1000 in the NYC area), but I know some are from the 90s - so may be closer.

I notice you don't like to add water to your whisky. Of course, everyone should drink it as they like it but I think Ralfy has some valid points on adding water and giving it a few minutes to open up, especially for cask strength. The water liberates flavors from the alcohol. I always think you're judging the drinks too soon after opening and pouring but, hey, you have more expertise than I do. Glenmorangie artificially colors their whiskey. I only thought of that when you all were comparing colors at around the 9 minute mark from old to new.

I am not sure how Glenmo 18 was matured back then (sure sounds like ex-sherry from your notes). The current version is a 15 year old ex-bourbon cask finished for 3 more years in ex-sherry AND then blended with 18 year old ex-bourbon casks (I'm sure Dr. Bill knows the ratio). They do look remarkably similar in color (according to someone who emailed the distillery, Glenmo doesn't add caramel coloring to the 18).

Good question! It might have spent more time in sherry - definitely tasted like it did at least.

U R funny ! love yr vid = (1) yes, it IS from the 1990s, should be 43% abv (2) the cork broke : IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD, simply cloth filter it . . . (3) back then, Scotches were for pirates with really bad teeth , and a Macallan 18 was barely 60-80 $USD - and a Macallan 10 Cask Strength 59% abv was 45-50 $ . . . now u know WHY old blokes like me (and other famous tuber from the bothy ) lament present day Scotches...

I remember those Old School Glenmorangie Bottles from the 90’s/2000’s. My Grandfather used to Buy them! Several years before he passed away. I let him try a Dram Pour of the new 18. He said it was nowhere near the original. Night and Day difference!
