I am so addicted to Cake styling products. I used the cream and mousse today and I really don’t need much of either. Then I went for a drive in the nice weather with the windows down and my curls look great!! Later after I was all dry I tried the Cake Hot Mess texture mousse that’s to be used on dry curls and it gave me more volume! I’m hooked!!!!

I used not your mothers products & I just couldn't keep up with it. My hair had zero shine on day 2 & 3 even after I refreshed it. I tried the cake line & it's a WINNER🎉 I can't live without their curl next door conditioner. It's great for cowashing & as a leave in. Their curl defining cream is also a winner. I started a modified CG method back in March and have stayed clear of silicones because that's what it recommended. However, I might give the Cake line a try bc I use a clarifying sulfate shampoo to get rid of build-up anyway. I use NYM Curl-talk and it doesn't really hold my waves. Like you, my hair falls out before the end of the day and it becomes frizzy the next morning. Though I have to mention I have 2a-2b waves and am still learning what products work for me haha. I'm not against silicones per-se just wary of them. Some are actually water soluble! Anyway, thanks for the comparison review! I now know about an alternative to curl-talk!

Yay!! As long as you clarify every 3-5 washes, the silicone (singular, low amount) in the Cake cream won’t give you any issues :) good luck on your curl journey!!

This was so helpful! I have both Cake and Not Your Mother's but never thought to test them side by side. I agree Cake has a tighter hold. I love the NYM line because it is so light and fresh. Both have their merrits

I am definitely a curly girl blessed with bouncy curly/waves and even more so with red hair. Unfortunately, my hair never stays curly more than one day. Even after trying so many different products and ways to take care of my hair, it is always a mess on day two. I try to calm it down with product or some mist but it just looks like I shook my head all over the place. I agree with Not Your Mother's products being that great. I used them and my hair got so frizzy. I definitely want to use the Cake Beauty products! I like that they are affordable!

Just picked up cake cream & mousse on sale. I am low porosity but my hair loves certain proteins, low on list. I can’t do NYM cream anymore. Hope this one is ok! I’m usually ok w keratin or amino acids. But rice seems to sit on top of my hair making it brittle. Fingers crossed. I so love the bottles!

I have been using Curl Talk mousse pretty much for the last yr of my curly girl journey. I have really liked it but at the same time like when you mentioned day 2 hair that's exactly what happens to my hair too. I think I may end up switching from it to the Cake after this. I found your channel for trying to change my shampoo and conditioner and thinking about switching to cake. What do you use for your shampoo and conditioner? Thanks for this review.

I actually don't like the Curl Talk Cream. It seems to heavy for me, but using just the Mousse works well for me. I'd be curious to hear how you like it on it's own of in combination with other products. I am curious to try the cake though!

I’ve used the Curl Talk Mousse in other combinations and had the same results - it looked good for a few minutes and then just fell flat and frizzy. It’s just not the product for me!

The silicone amount is so low that it doesn’t build up any faster than any other emollient! I use a sulfate-free shampoo and then clarify every 3-5 washes 😊

If I understand, the NYM Curl Talk Cream is not CGM friendly. It threw off a lot of people because all other Curl Talk is CGM friendly, but the cream is not. It's got isoparffin, I believe was the ingredient. That said, I haven't tried Cake yet because it's not easily accessible to me. But I have tried NYM Curl Talk shampoo, conditioner and mousse and I felt like I had pseudo okay results for weeks, got better with adding Uncle Funkys Daughter Curly Magic (which if you havent tried that for your channel, I'd like to see you do that- maybe even a UFD vs Jessicurl curl stimulators) but then suddenly my hair went very sad, limp, stringy. I started using other things, and when I used even one product from the Curl Talk line, I have problems. So I think I've officially given up on it. It can be hard to tell on video but, would you describe your hair as fine and thin? If so, I'd start labeling your videos as that because I have fine, thin hair, definitely thinner than yours and finding a channel that is fine, thin, and specifically tries lightweight products and techniques to help with clumping, volume...very hard to find!

I feel like the Not Your Mother's Curl Talk cream is the one that makes my curls not hold up. If and when I apply it, I use very little. The mousse, I go to town with. Unfortunately, I do have frizz at my crown. So, I need to find a good oil to finish it all off. I just purchased the Cake Beauty mousse today and I'm very excited to try it out.

@@briannaprieto3043I liked it a lot. I also purchased Cake curl cream at a later time and it is so silky. However, it is too silky for my thin hair so I have to use a tiny bit. My combo under $10 is the Cake curl cream, NYMC talk gel, with a thin layer of NYMC mousse.

Honestly? Yes. There is a difference. But without seeing the brushes side by side I can’t tell you what it is 🤣 I had a similar knock-off originally but the bristles and pad shape were different enough that I didn’t get the same results AT ALL. I always think it’s worth purchasing the real thing!

First of all, wauw!! How do you dry detangle with the brush? Even with a pinapple sleep, my hear is tangled and I almost need to re-wet it completely :-(

Aw, thanks!! 🥰 I find sleeping in a silk or satin bonnet helps fight the tangling A LOT. For dry detangling, especially for refresh purposes, I suggest going clump by clump from the ends to the roots, gently rotating the brush in the direction of your curl. It will help the clumps to reform and then you can add water/product/steam/all of the above :)

I tried cake mousse and cream on my hair and I got terrible results. It did not work for my very fine hair. I applied it and it looked great to start with but after it dried and I scrunched out the crunch, all my waves literally slid out of my hair. Within a few hours, my hair was limp! I was bummed. I actually only tried NYM mousse and I didn't like it. It felt as if there was a plastic coating on my hair. I hate that feeling. I never tried the cream. My hair is super fine and I have a hard time finding products that don't weigh it down, but give it light hold. Still looking.

Thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear you had a poor experience with both brands 😭 if you’re experiencing your curls dropping like that frequently, especially with all sorts of different products, it might be time for a protein treatment!

@@TheFitCurls I have protein in most of my products and I do a protein mask every week! My hair is so, so fine and it frustrates me so much! So difficult. I have been told in the past by stylists that my hair is the most difficult they have ever worked with due to it's fineness. Products really weigh my hair down. ;-(

We have all been there, friend!! I always recommend layering your products - one for moisture and 1-2 for hold! That’s why I use both cream and mousse. The creams add and seal in moisture while the mousses add hold to help the style last for multiple days (or not for me where the NYM products are concerned 😂). I highly recommend trying both types of products together!

IMO NYM is WAYYYYY over rated. It's because NYM is chasing and sponsoring literally EVERY single influencer who cut ties with Deva. I don't know why everyone can't see through that. These influencers don't even use NYM behind the scenes. If you watch their insta stories etc and look in the background....none of NYM products are in their showers or on their counters. I bought the entire line and it's just ehhhh. Not terrible but def not worth the hype at all. My hair feels greasy afterwards, the shampoo dries my hair, conditioner has no slip, the cream does nothing, the gel leaves white flakes everywhere. My hair doesn't last longer than 4 hours.

I bought some shampoo and conditioner from them and it dried the fuck out of my hair 😂 my mom used the gel and it frizzed out her hair too and when it was time to sotc it wasn’t soft or as defined as the Aussie instant freeze for example. I just bought the cake one lets hope it works!!! 😀
