Curlformers Dupe! Magic Leverage First Impression Review! Naptural85

I'm pretty much obsessed with Curlformers, that's no secret! But I'm always getting questions about whether there are any Curlformer knock offs or inexpensive options, and if so, do they work or not!? So I figured it was time to test out the Curlformer Dupes called, Magic Leverage, or Vakind Magic Leverage, sold through Amazon! I was pretty shocked at the results!
This is my complete review and opinion, including First Impression! I hope you enjoy, and I hope that it helps!

I got a 40pk on Amazon for $14.37 and ordered a genuine curlformer hook for $5 with shipping. Problem solved!

At first it was very hard for me to pull my hair through the curl rod on the magic leverage. it would always get stuck because the plastic was hard and the openings would close very tightly and not allow the hair to skip through but to remedy that I decided to place them in boiling hot water (turning off heat before placing them in) for about 30sec to soften the plastic and openings and it worked like a charm allowing my hair to skip through easily. Now the plastic is probably is as soft as the original curlformers. Woo hop! dupe wins!

I know this video is old but for anyone just watching. I have both the real curlformers and the dupe. And both do work, however I find the dupe to be uncomfortable and they pull harshly on the scalp. That's my personal opinion/experience. I too have had my curlformers for about 3 years (still in perfect condition) so I feel they have paid for themselves. Either way curlformers are a great styling tool and I highly recommend them! They also sell small amounts of curlformers at Sally's so you could test both out if you were unsure. Thanks for doing this vid Whitney!

Magic Leverage could be a good option, as long as you don't sleep with them. Have them on for 4-6 during the day, and do other things around the house, and then take them out.

Most people probably wouldn't use these as often as you do anyway so it's okay to use a product that may be less durable. Even if you only use them one time at home, $30 is still an alright price compared to the $85+ you'd be paying for a salon style!

I went to Sally's saw the price on the curlformers & instantly walked away from them lol. I got the knock off from amazon. The curls came out great but if you live in a place with lots of fog like I do... Try this style in the summer.

The dupes gave you ALOT less frizz. I think the curlformers are good for Caucasian hair, because it's gentler. Versus our African American hair that needs extra care(It's worth it, our thick hair is gorgeous in my opinion), so the dupes work better for our hair type because it's a bit more aggressive in locking the hair in. Of course that's based on the plastic. (:

*****, my hair sheds alot, but that has nothing to do with which curlformers you use. It's an internal thing most of the time. But use what feels comfortable for you. :-)

I bought my knockoffs on ebay. I got a ton for a good price. I'm glad you are digging them. I only tried them once but my hair takes days (it seems) to dry at the crown. Needless to say it wasn't dry and turned into a hot nappy mess with a bunch of dumb curls around a short fro. I'll give it another go. Matter of fact I should retry all the rollers I've purchased since natural. I have so many.

I bought the Vakind Magic Leverage off of Amazon also. I actually got 40 of them for $13.99 and they were perfect in my daughters hair. The con that I had was also the plastic was not comfortable to sleep in and the wand is a little fragile. I bought a Curlformer brand wand from Sally's.

Hi Naptural85! I'm glad you did a review on ML & Curlformers. I came across my very old plastic rollers (from the 80s) & needed something softer & better to use when sleeping. The price & results from ML looks GREAT on your hair! It's good that you had your Curlformers so long & I like that as well. SERIOUSLY! I have them. Sleeping in them is a big NO. It's impossible, and painful, I tried sleeping in them once and couldn't even lay on my head, I felt like my hair was pulling I didn't sleep a wink that night and could not WAIT to take them out. But sitting up, moving around, is bearable. Beautiful curls in the end!

Thanks for the thoughtful review Whitney! Great idea comparing the two products! I just wanted to add that it might actually not be good for your hair that the cheaper version gives a smoother set, especially for kinkier hair textures. Remember that one of the main reason our kinky hair has a lower tensile strength is because we have less layers of cuticle protecting the hair shaft. Your result of a smoother set and observations about the harder plastic makes me wonder whether the smoother set is because the harder plastic applies greater frictional forces to the hair shaft. If this is the case I think that prolonged and/or frequent use of this product would cause greater and faster weathering of the hair cuticle and hence increased breakage over time. Just some food for thought! :)
