All valuable advice in this video. Ty for reminding everyone that marketing can be a terrible lure in this field. It thrives on frustration and insecurities and one should never forget that their job is to make us buy more stuff. Creating trends, must haves needs and obligations is a way to endure the public captivity somehow.

The over moisturizing really spoke to me. Nowadays, I only use a light leave-in + a defining product or no leave-in at all. But when I started it was the norm to do leave in + curl cream + gel. And I have coily, coarse type 4 hair but it was still so weighed down, I couldn’t get definition.

omg when you showed the video of your hair when it was over moisturised I gasped out loud! Literally me today! Have been trying so many ways to get my curls to bounce, this morning I did a "big moisture wash" with loads of heavy creams etc and I have never had such an awful hair day. Thanks for all these tips, I'm actually so relieved to be freed from all these curly rules haha

I did the curly girl method back in lockdown and I too stopped using sulphates and silicones in products. I started co-washing and for the first month or so my hair was great, alot less frizz, more bouncy and moisturised but then it started to have a negative impact. My hair and scalp were never being properly washed, I just co washed and massaged my scalp as I did it. After about 5 months my hair was not looking as good and my scalp was soooooooo itchy and sore at the back of my head. I had never had scalp issues before so couldn't understand what had happened! After another few months `i watched a you tuber who said co washing had caused her scalp issues and I had a light bulb moment. I went out and bought sulphate free shampoo and washed my hair, it felt so good. It has taken a year or more to finally get the itching scalp sorted and I would never again do co-washing as my only source of cleaning my hair.!! I am still doing alot of other curly hair advice which has helped so it's definitely as you say Sophie, pick and choose what advice you follow and what suits you...😀👍

This is one of the best video I have seen. I have been styling my curly hair since teenage years… 30 years ago. I was using whatever shampoo and conditionner and gel or mousse my mother bought at the lower price possible, washing my hair almost every day. My curls looked great most of the time. Then I spaced the wash days, used very moisterizing stuff. I developped severe scalp issues and started LOSING hairs! A dermatologist told me to wash my hair every 24-48h until the inflammatory condition is solved. She also told me its not the frequency of washes that stimulates sebum production, but inflammation and genetics. If you overwash, the scalp can get dry and inflammed. If you underwash, you can get clogged pores and over growth of microbes… and inflammation. So just listen to your hair and scalp… Your best comment is about the goal of healthy hair instead of curlier hair. I have virgin fine hair that gets overmoisturized easily. Like on my picture profile. As per curl training… it makes no sense. What I do observe is that my hair kinda keeps a memory of the shape it was styled in the last wash, probably some bonds that are not 100% reset when I wash… but its subtle and non lasting.

My curly hair works happily on fairly budget products from Fructis or Pantene that are for colour treated or curly hair. I wash most days, esp as I exercise and live in a humid climate (the natural enemy of curly hair) and use a hair mask and/or gel. This is a good video bc it is all about getting back to basics. Hair products, like skincare, don't have to cost alot to be good.

My 30 year old nephew was visiting from the states last week and he grabbed some hand lotion to 'style' his naturally curly hair. Of course I screamed at him shouting what the hell are you doing, that's grandads hand lotion! He said the same thing as your friend - it's cream, isn't it?! And it worked beautifully on his thick curly mop! I TOTALLY agree with you that washing your scalp is just as important as washing the rest of your body. For me personally, not only do I get a build up of products but my scalp gets very greasy which actually 'feeds' dandruff and psoriasis which I started to get. I had to see a dermatologist who explained this to me as there was a time when I went through deep depression that I could barely shower, yet alone wash my hair. I ended up needing a steroid solution to wash my hair with which ckeared up the psoriasis. Since then, I religiously wash my hair at least once a week wirh a gentle salicylic acid shampoo with a silicone scrubby brush which I absolutely love using. The shampoo is mild enough and using the brush really helps get through my curls to my scalp and I've not had a return of the dreaded psoriasis since! I also was loosing a lot of hair during that time due to the build up of psoriasis and the scaly skin which prevented my hair growing. I'm pleased to report, all is well now! I just need to learn how to look after my curls! Watching your videos has helped immensely, I'm so very grateful! Thank you ❤

Great video! Some really good advice, especially about marketing and information on the internet. Just because we can buy and do all the things doesn't mean we should (depending on your hair). Learning what your hair needs and trial and error starting with easy steps seems to work well (at least for me).

As someone with 2a-2b and the odd 2c wave, all of these advice is sort of what I learned along the way as well. Also the wavy girls really should be using mousse, it is so good for waves. I have super fine strands but medium density so my hair is very easily weighted down. I never ever do leave in conditioner, if my hair feels dry I do a rinse out mask every now and then and I always double cleanse cus my hair is super sensitive to residue product.

@kristinekerr3688 Wow. I didn't think I'd get a response, or I would have. I have wavy curly hair with some coils when it's wet. I used to let it air dry, and the curls will stay about 24 hours. It weighs down easy with more than a couple of products but has a ton of volume and frizz without a serum or leave in of some kind. My curls stay well in the back and best underneath. It also dries faster and is thinner in the front. Thanks for your advice.

The care for finer and coarser hair is so different. I deep condition(professional wave conditioner, hair mask and leave-in deep condition and serum treatment) my hair TWICE a week because its sheer weight drags everything down and the volume of shedding hair tangles it up, and my hair is in general poor health due to stress and unbalanced nutrition. If I had fine hair like my father and sisters I'd never have managed it. I see that with straight hair too - my fine-straight haired sister needs to brush out the natural oils lest her scalp and upper hair hair gets greasy while Southern Indian and East Asian women with thick, coarse straight hair need to keep it oiled artificially for better health.

I don't curl train anymore because if I accidentally twist my hair the wrong way it makes it straight instead of curly 💀 Also, I am a year into my curly hair journey, my hair has grown 6 inches and my hair went from wavy to curly. I actually have never used a deep conditioner. My hair is naturally soft and lower porosity so my hair holds moisture for a long time and I really don't need it. My hair actually responds better to protein. On wash day (once a week) I alternate between a protein shampoo and a clarifying shampoo (protein one week then clarifying the next), then I use a basic rinse out conditioner. After my shower I use a lightweight spray in conditioner, then a lightweight leave in cream, a protein based heat protectant (curlsmith miracle shield), I style my hair, and then I add the curlsmith hydro style flexi jelly (had to name it because it's a very specific type of gel). Then I just diffuse my hair and my hair lasts all week with maybe one refresh throughout the week. I also want to add more protein products, but can't afford to rn so I will have to try that out later. Anyways after that whole routine my hair feels soft but also super bouncy and voluminous.

@Hannah7Banana
@Hannah7Banana 7 ай бұрын
@@katherinewebb3871 definitely, curlsmith has been a lifesaver for me. It is a bit expensive, (sometimes running $30 a bottle) but totally worth it. If you are going to get a curlsmith product I would recommend their clarifying kit, anything from their scalp line, the miracle shield, and the frizz rescue finishing serum. Curlsmith is also great if you prefer products without silicones or sulfates. (which I do because I have tried both) for other hair products that are cheaper I would recommend shea moisture.

I have fine, low density 3b curls & my hair is your length. If i over condition my hair doesn’t curl as well (it’s over moisturized) and I will lack volume. I use shampoo, conditioner, a liquid-y gel and sometimes a mousse over the gel. Most washes I get good results; which to me is definition & volume👍

Thanks Soph. I dont follow the curly girl method either and i follow a lot of tips that you've given here. If i use a leave in I dont use a curl cream also etc. I do cleanse and i use head and shoulders to give my hair a really good cleanse and clean i will follow with a deep conditioner afterwards also. I dont deep condition a lot maybe once or twice a month. I am going to try to use deep conditioner to detangle my hair before i shampoo as my hair gets so knotty and tangled, and i have detangled when my hair is dry which i know causes breakage on my hair even thou i start from the bottom and work my way up I have used an oil that a company gave me to trial that i leave on for a scalp treatment and to help growth and hair to become healthier, it has helped lots , but detangling with just that in my hair is still not really enough to detangle all the knotts that accumulate in my hair. Yep have tried enough products from every brand under the sun to supply a small country. Have felt like a mad scientist thinking the next product or combo would finally be hat magicsl solution to leave ny crazy mane of waves and curls finslly uniform as opposed to looking like don king of heat isnt used. Just hard to accept the years of exhaustion and trying endless routines while practically hopping on one foot will be that magic fix in the hope we all have lol. Even having given up on heat for years, eating well, amazing supplements, insanely quality products per being an ingredient nazi, working out etc and just doing all right yet my hair is still wild and makes me feel so unkept when wearing down which ruins your entire mood and confidence when hair is such a big feature. Why i end up alwqys doing a loose polished top knot with silk scrunchies to feel put together and not drive myself mad. Wearing down is only an option if going over top layers with a curling wand which i try to avoid. Hard to accept when you spend so much time and wffort doing all right and still cant get uniform even curls like many have effortlessly lol but thats life. Had tight curls as a kid and all the years of straightening in my teens and 20s my hair became a lose wave which i atleast enjoyed because it was uniform. Have never been able to get back my original curls and the mix of waves, ringlets and curls now especislly on my under layers os what annoyingly even after a perfect haircut makes my ends look uneven as if i got a bad cut. Odd ball for sure but appreciate channels like yours immensely with so many great tips for all those that share the same frustrations year round! 😅❤❤❤

Maybe you could do a high-lift color instead of bleach. I’d ask my hairdresser if that’d work for your hair color. It would depend on the depth of your natural color tho. Wash your hair as little as possible w/out it looking dirty/greasy…I do it once a week but if that’s not enough for you try twice a week (my hair is naturally curly). Dimethicone is not damaging to hair but does need to be removed (clarified) on occasion. Just don’t over-do it. Most people can get away with/ monthly clarifying. Do a deep condition weekly until no longer needed that frequently.

There are so many different things that could cause this there's no one solution. Being dry and irritated (so you could use a moisturising shampoo like Eucerin, or consider whether you're overwashing or drying out your scalp with hairdryer heat), staying wet and yeast/fungal growth (so needing an antifungal shampoo and maybe different drying method to ensure air gets to your scalp, especially if you have high density hair and were air drying), product or skin flake buildup (so you'd want a clarifying shampoo or ACV rinse or glycolic acid rinse or using less heavy products or washing more often), product allergies or irritation, product pH (see rinses above) some combination of all of the above, even headlice (if you've been around kids). It sucks but gotta try to figure it out yourself, since what worked for someone else online may be counterproductive for you. Sorry to write such a long comment, just sharing since I've been through similar issues myself.
