I finally fully embraced my curls when I turned 60. I let my hair go gray and now I have beautiful silver curls that I’m constantly getting compliments on, often by strangers. I’ve also let my hair grow and it is a little bit shorter than yours. I’ve learned so much from you and Manes by Mell on how to take care of my curls and protecting them at night. While my curl pattern is not as defined and beautiful as yours and Mell’s, I’ve learned to love my own curls. Thanks for your great content!

We have just about the same story! I'm trying to get my hair healthy, BUT I still get my roots done😮 lol I say I want to embrace my grey but yet I'm doing that. I stopped having bleach highlights tho. I don't like the growing out part of it. And thanks Sofia, this video was great! Any suggestions?

I can totally relate to this video . My whole life has been influenced by my hair . I’m 61 and growing up with auburn corkscrew curly hair was always a battle. I’ve gone from chemical straightening to going natural. I never felt pretty unless my hair was straight. The past few years I’ve been wearing a bun almost every day. I now have tension alopecia and it may never grow back . I’m back to wearing it down and curly and self acceptance. Thank you for posting this . ❤️

Me too. I didn't even know I had curly hair until I was about 20 because my mother had scraped my hair back and brushed it out because it was seen as symptomatic of how "bad" I was .... from birth. It was talked about as some sort of separate entity almost and, when I did cut it, with no idea of what to do with it, I basically looked like a poodle, or so I thought. Then it became an object of ridicule. I remember not getting a job because my hair didn't fit the company culture. I remember being asked if it was real. I gave up. I cut it all off to an inch long and then, as it grew back, tied it into a bun where it sat for the next 33 years or so, and coloured with box DIY dye to hide the whites and greys which had started appearing in my early 20s. Mum had a thing about that too and I was just too well conditioned (unlike my hair) to fight or be me. After a brief period of some independence, I went back permanently to care for her. She died fairly recently, I started long overdue therapy and stopped dyeing it. Then, only a month ago, I took it out of its prison. Having hacked chunks off over the years, it's a bit of a mess, and the mechanical damage has certainly happened. I have binge watched curly content creators and can certainly relate to all of this. I finally settled on Sophie and a lady called Gena Marie, who has much finer hair because mine is considerably thinner than it was. Miss Charmsie provided the tip I started using ro protect my hair at night with her three little pigtails in a satin bonnet, but Sophie's content speaks to me psychologically. Fortunately, I don't get comparison envy any more but I had it when I was younger .... apart from anything else, I just wanted a different life. But I'm getting there. The first time I walked out of the house and into a public place with my hair down, I thought everyone would laugh but of course they didn't!! My hair is now representing a HUGE psychological and personal healing journey and I am working g on the basis that it's better late than never. Thank you Sophie, and to all the ladies out there who also help with their comments. ❤

Thank you for this. I think my biggest setback was when I got so overwhelmed with all the 'dos and don'ts', rules (and then saying there's no rules), styling techniques, the thousands of products and tools reviews, etc. I fell into the rabbit hole and spent too much money, time, and effort... but not find the right way for me. I just gave up and said, "you know what? I'm done." But now, my top (if not only) priority is to keep my hair healthy. I hope everything else will follow.

The curls vs outfit part HITS HOME!! I’ve always been a girl who loves punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal etc and being a curly girl just does not fit that whole aesthetic… UNTIL I found Fefe Dobson! Lol ♥️

Number 4 comparison should of been common sense to me but it was so important to hear it. Yes, when I watched your video for the first time, I showed my daughter and said I want her curls. Knowing that this is a journey and understanding that my curls may never look like yours is so important to take in. Learning to love MY curls and fining out what works for me is as much a part of the journey as caring for my hair. Your such a smart little cookie 🍪 Thank you for making videos and educating us through your experience. ❤

Number 4 is so important, thanks for always including this Sophie ❤. I’ve been looking after my hair and styling it natural for a year now and realised early on the top half around the crown was just a different type to the front and underneath. I have mostly S shaped waves/curls on the top and C shaped ringlets on the bottom. I knew I didn’t have super tight curls so I was never expecting my hair to look like yours or other content creators however I was hoping from looking after it that I’d get get a consistent pattern all over. My goal now is to accept that my hair has a different pattern naturally and that’s ok too.

Thank you for your comment! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my content ❤️✨ I have heard this is very common to have multiple curl patterns all over, very normal 🫶 I have heard people before almost doing completely different styling techniques and products on different parts of their hair. So for example: adding a stronger gel or protein based products to the looser curl sections to try and match them up. But as you say I think it is all about embracing and feeling confident with what you have, and also having fun with it! ❤️🫶✨

I'm just watching cuz I watch all your videos lol. Also dancer here! Definitely remember those days of slicked styles. I still wear braids or not so slick ponytails when I dance or even claw clip styles! I absolutely love long hair on myself and my hair is wavy so not as much shrinkage my I purposefully use slightly heavier products to elongate my hair and air dry more which helps the urge to straighten here and there. But I can also diffuse and use lighter products to make my waves shrink up. I follow people of all different hair types with your hair being very different than mine but I love the knowledge you spread with your videos!

For 18 years I was in mom mode. Pulled back in a bun and headbands. So yeah, I know all about mechanical damage. Personal experience can be more informative than informative from people quoting a book. Thank you for your videos 📹 😊 ❤

Such a great content Sophie, like always. I've been following you since I started my curly hair journey last year. I relate to so much of this video. I thankfully never got into straightening my hair (mostly out of laziness) but because I was lazy and never felt confident with it I have always had it back in a bun or pony tail, and can definitely tell where it has receded as a result. I started embracing it more about 10 years ago but I still have it pulled back 99% of the time so I'm still working on getting the confidence to just embrace it how it is no matter the wash day. I really relate to the part about growing up not seeing anyone with curly hair. I feel like the only person on TV was Tracy Beaker when I was growing up, but the actress used to straighten her hair for red carpets so it really got into my head that you could only properly look pretty and elegant if you straightened your hair. It would have made such a difference if there were "pretty" main characters who were curly or actresses who wore their natural curls to events.

This is such a great video and you have hit on so many points that resonate with me and my curly hair journey, right back to how I viewed them as a child. It is so helpful to hear all these reminders of ways we can sabotage ourselves. My biggest one is scraping my hair back from day 3 onwards after my wash day as it is easy for work etc. You have given me food for thought as I have got a receding hairline, damage at the back where I tie it up and the top is straighter. I am definitely going to try looser styles to pin back instead of tight ponytail. Thanks as always for your content, it is so helpful.😀❤

Thank you for your comment! I feel so many of us have the same stories and experience the same problems. Curly hair can be a lot of work and it’s sometimes easy to just slick it back! I still do it just not as much. My aim is to keep sharing looser hairstyle options people can consider and versatile ways to deal with the front of the hair. Also I’m so glad you find my content helpful 🥹❤️ thank you for your support on my channel I really appreciate it 🫶✨

Dear Sophie, thank you for creating all that interesting, educational content, and I am enjoying your every clip ❤. Hope, not be attacked from all your fans, but I do not have natural curls, but chemicaly made curls. I love curls so much, that I decided to make my life long wish come true, and do this for myself. I have natural straight hair. This is totally different themes, than what were you talking in the video, but I wanted to speak a little bit about this, this kind of love to curls, and what would one person do, to get them. Hope I am not offending any naturally curly girl. Best of luck everyday to everyone who is struggling to recognize its love to curls, and I am wishing you to find your love to them as soon as possible. ❤

At 35 I hated my curly hair so much I clipped all my hair off and wore wigs until the age of 58. I decided a year and a half ago I was going to grow my beautiful curly grey hair out and ditched all the wigs. I am for the most part really loving my hair (I will admit I have the odd day, where I don’t like the gray, but I do love the curls). I have been focussing on hair health. I am learning about different hair products for curly hair and what works for me. I do have an undercut as my hair is quite thick in the back, this makes a big difference. I tie it up often, but make sure that I am using soft scrunchies, and I never slick it back tight. This was an amazing video, thank you so much🥰. You are so inspiring!!

Im at such a loss. My curls look very similar to yours and they seem to only be healthy and look good when my hair is shoulder length. I’ve been trying to grow it out and the longer it gets, the less curly it gets and it just looks so bad, like heat damage 😭 idk what to doooo

Girl me too!!! There was a time my hair was SO much more healthy than now it got coily when wet and dried wavy/ straight now I’m lucky if I get one wavy strand 😢😭I absolutely damaged tf out of my hair I shaved it off for a fresh start then a couple months later back to my bad habits and bleached and damaged my hair again ugh 😩 it’s so hard, what helps me is not blow drying my hair or like she said in the video to diffuse blow dry your hair on low heat. Good luck!! ❤

I do not understand how this video doesn't have more views. It was so well thought out. I'm at the beginning of my wavy/curly hair journey and I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out my curl type (possibly 2b/c and maybe some 3a) as well as what my hair wants from me. This video was really helpful, I hadn't thought about the damage from putting my hair up so much as a kid. I DEFINITELY haven't considered my DIET being an issue.🫠
