I, too, have many hundreds of thousands of points in airline programs from speculative transfers 😅. I don't recommend it to people who are new, but if you've used a program many times in the past, get that 15, 20, or ever 30% bonus locked in 🤑

Yesterday, I saw 8 seats in business class to Japan on United for 75k Aeroplan points. With the bonus that's only 63k points each. Not bad...

I'm thinking about the Aeroplan bonus since I will most likely be using Air Canada to book a flight in the next few weeks, but I'm trying to use up AMEX points right now and don't really want to use Chase points, so I'm not sure what I'll do yet

Swiss business? Curious what you liked about them. I did Dubai-Zurich round trip in May, and nothing stood out to me, just a functional flight in similar biz seats you’d find in a much smaller 737 MAX.

Back in 2022 there was a 40% Transfer Bonus from AMEX MR-points to Avio that I decided to go ahead as I hope can fly Qatar QSuite even though not sure when. It took me more than a year to finally got what I wanted so cost me (75K x 2) each way and overall 300K but for sure worthwhile! Most importantly, since then I don’t believe seeing the same 40% Transfer Bonus. My conclusion: If the Transfer Bonus is good enough then I will go ahead and keep the fingers crossed! Edited: I am talking about AMEX MR that I have the most. I might do the same to my Chase UR-points but NOT to my limited Citi ThankYou Point and Capital One Miles that I plan to use these more carefully!

Avios or virgin are ones i do speculatively because at minimum they have solid enough use cases domestically that i can use to visit family. Beyond that i need to have a plan. Ive been burned by a devaluation where the use case i wanted wasnt even valid anymore. Which was a bummer.

Speculative transfers are fine if you are sure youll use that program. A 30% bonus is a safeguard against a 30% devaluation at worst. Which is fine.

I think you can speculatively transfer points if you have a lot of potential travel in the next year or two and are willing to use the points that you speculatively transferred with flexibility. For me, it is all about the flexibility, number of potential trips, and the airline. Since I have a 6 year old that is in school most of the year, unfortunately, I don;t have the flexibility I once did. Having said this, I did manage to snag 2 business class tickets on Air France for 55K miles next January to celebrate my 10th anniversary. Usually, I can't go during January but I got some help this time around for the big celebration!
