@maxjg ngl, I only enjoyed like 4 songs total from both albums. These albums were really overwhelming, but extremely different to what Nick usually produces. I'm really looking forward to this new album since it gives me "Voyager" vibes (his other album)

As I type this, I’m sitting in a psych unit. (Yes we can have our phones here which is a blessing) I have severe panic disorder from watching my dad pass away a while back. I listen to this band during my panic attacks and it honestly helps calm me down. So thank you and keep making amazing music because it does have a great effect on people.

When I hear Current Joys I feel a sense of calmness, a sense of comfort, I find my home in his music. His music has gotten me through more depressive episodes then I've liked to count, his music helping me gather the courage to live on to the next day. I fucking love this.

A heartfelt letter to Nick Rattigan aka currentjoys If you’ve ever wondered if your music saved someone, please know it saved me. For the past 2 years of my life I was in the darkest hole ever, my mom passed away from Covid and a year later my sister was found dead in her bathtub from a drug overdose. All while that was going on I was also fighting monsters I didn’t even know existed. It wasn’t until recently I was diagnosed with Major depressive disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. For the past year it reached its apex and came so close to winning, I was crying every other day, suicide was constantly on my mind, I had so many unresolved issues and felt so lost that life looked like a mountain that I didn’t have the tools to climb, my only outlets were my art/photography (which you inspire a lot of) and your music. Even when I came out as bisexual over text to my family, I had “breaking the waves” playing to help comfort me. You were my most streamed artist for 2 years straight and I was in the top 1% of your listeners. New flesh is my most streamed song ever. This song and upcoming album couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. because after 2 years a few months ago i decided to get help, it was either that or death. Through trial and error I ended up finding meds that worked for me, it wasn’t until a week ago I randomly noticed how much they were helping. My emotions were stable throughout the day, my mind wasn’t a warzone, the majority of my negative thoughts disappeared, my anxiety and sense of well being are so much better, but most importantly, i actually see a future for myself now. And you were there through all of it. Now going back to why I started writing this and why I said this song and album couldn’t have come at a better time is because while listening to it from 2:22 to 3:19 I began crying. Because while looking back at everything and now sitting here where I am, that segment sums up how all of that shit and getting myself to this point feels. It’s a feeling of joy, hope, perseverance, relief, redemption, it’s the culmination and celebration to the end of a long grueling battle. It’s music of catharsis and freedom. It’s the sound of victory and an end to the monsters that plagued me for so long. Thank you for existing Nick. I hope one day to see you live and meet you, and hopefully get a hug from one of my biggest hero’s.

What things you have had to go through, friend, I think that if you have managed to overcome all that in some way, now is the time for life to smile at you and say that you are ready to leave the cursed hole of depression. You make art and continue with your passion, there are still people who love you and appreciate you very much.

Current Joys was the first musician that I ever seriously listened to and tried to understand. He inspired me to make my own music and to find more music to listen to. I owe almost all of my current appreciation for music to his earlier albums. I'd feel bad if I didn't express that I think his music has changed for the worse in recent years. I know all art must evolve and that stagnating in the same genre would lead to slow death but I don't know what happened. It feels like his move to LA changed his music. This song is a refreshing reminder that Nick still has the ability to make beautiful new music. Edit: if anyone is reading this that was at his valentines day show in 2018 at the market hotel in Brooklyn i cannot for the life of me remember what song he sang acapella at the end while he walked through the crowd and put his hands on peoples shoulders. It was beautiful and sometimes I dream of it but can't remember the words when I wake up.

fantastic. i’ve listened to this twice now & both times once the violin kicks in, for some reason, i can rlly hear the “come a little closer” hook, by the elephant. it’s very internal & i’m not sure i’d even say the songs sound alike rlly, but that hook jst rlly come to mind for me there. two great songs either way

The hate this man gets for doing and making whatever he wants is completely unwarranted!! Dude literally has like 30+ old songs that are timeless songs you will continue to listen to. Let Nick make whatever he wants he gave you so much already. Musicians draw from all of their interest and most would love to dabble into different genres. "Fans" that took the time to say hateful negative things about Current Joys are terrible people. Instead we should be happy for Nick he's grown into the position with Secretly Canadian to do exactly what he wants! That's punk as hell and always will be.
