A heartfelt letter to Nick Rattigan aka currentjoys If you’ve ever wondered if your music saved someone, please know it saved me. For the past 2 years of my life I was in the darkest hole ever, my mom passed away from Covid and a year later my sister was found dead in her bathtub from a drug overdose. All while that was going on I was also fighting monsters I didn’t even know existed. It wasn’t until recently I was diagnosed with Major depressive disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. For the past year it reached its apex and came so close to winning, I was crying every other day, suicide was constantly on my mind, I had so many unresolved issues and felt so lost that life looked like a mountain that I didn’t have the tools to climb, my only outlets were my art/photography (which you inspire a lot of) and your music. Even when I came out as bisexual over text to my family, I had “breaking the waves” playing to help comfort me. You were my most streamed artist for 2 years straight and I was in the top 1% of your listeners. New flesh is my most streamed song ever. This song and upcoming album couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. because after 2 years a few months ago i decided to get help, it was either that or death. Through trial and error I ended up finding meds that worked for me, it wasn’t until a week ago I randomly noticed how much they were helping. My emotions were stable throughout the day, my mind wasn’t a warzone, the majority of my negative thoughts disappeared, my anxiety and sense of well being are so much better, but most importantly, i actually see a future for myself now. And you were there through all of it. Now going back to why I started writing this and why I said this song and album couldn’t have come at a better time is because while listening to it from 2:22 to 3:19 I began crying. Because while looking back at everything and now sitting here where I am, that segment sums up how all of that shit and getting myself to this point feels. It’s a feeling of joy, hope, perseverance, relief, redemption, it’s the culmination and celebration to the end of a long grueling battle. It’s music of catharsis and freedom. It’s the sound of victory and an end to the monsters that plagued me for so long. Thank you for existing Nick. I hope one day to see you live and meet you, and hopefully get a hug from one of my biggest hero’s.

Current Joys was the first musician that I ever seriously listened to and tried to understand. He inspired me to make my own music and to find more music to listen to. I owe almost all of my current appreciation for music to his earlier albums. I'd feel bad if I didn't express that I think his music has changed for the worse in recent years. I know all art must evolve and that stagnating in the same genre would lead to slow death but I don't know what happened. It feels like his move to LA changed his music. This song is a refreshing reminder that Nick still has the ability to make beautiful new music. Edit: if anyone is reading this that was at his valentines day show in 2018 at the market hotel in Brooklyn i cannot for the life of me remember what song he sang acapella at the end while he walked through the crowd and put his hands on peoples shoulders. It was beautiful and sometimes I dream of it but can't remember the words when I wake up.
