Strangely i find trail running shoes to have better traction than heavy mountain boots. I just tie laces tighter and use thicker socks... and for safety reasons mind every step. My feet are less tired at the end and feeling of freedom and being nimble throughout the run is priceless. Ps. Great video as always!

Kamikochi is amazing especially in Autumn. There are a significant number of bear sightings but most people hike with bells. The “scrabble” is incredibly rough on the knees. Toward the top people do get in trouble and a few people are airlifted to safety but what an amazingly beautiful place and soooo hospitable. The upper reaches get treacherous so being properly equipped is quite necessary.

Awesome video shows how nice Kamikochi is very well. In general when running at high altitudes there in fall it is nice to bring spikes you can put on the shoes. Sometimes there is a serious freeze and it gets really slippery. For a future challenge but perhaps in warmer weather take the Mae Hotaka trail then to Oku Hotaka then down and out the same way you got out. It is absolutely incredible. You also do not need to stay in a hut you can camp, even the busiest times there are enough spots to pitch a tent.

When did you go this year. I was in Kamikochi in October 15ish. It was simply Amazing. I can close my eyes and clearly hear the river rushing by and the distinct sound of bells. Looking up I see the Kappa Bridge and beyond it the glorious expanse of the valley which slowly meets the fingers of the mountains. The color transitioning from green to yellow to brown to the white snow at the top of the mountain. It was the best place I visited in Japan and I'll definitely go back one day. Thanks for recommending it in your book as that was what convinced me to travel there!

They actually just got done removing a lot of stones from the river on the side between the bridge and mountain. It looks so much wider now than when this was shot.

This was super impressive, and incredibly beautiful! I guess busy places are busy for a reason haha. Too bad about the leaves, but I love the first dusting of snow in the mountains, gives them so much contrast. But dang bear spray is expensive in Japan! Can get it for like $40USD where I live in Canada. But always best to be safe, and at least you don't have to replace it very often. Very sad to hear about all the recent bear encounters in Japan though.
@CurrentlyHannah
@CurrentlyHannah Жыл бұрын
Yeah the snow was actually a pleasant surprise! The autumn leaves ended up being a week late 😮 And yeahhhh I guess it’s kinda a niche item that isn’t super necessary for most people so they can put the price up 🥲

@@CurrentlyHannah It feels like the 'normal' schedules for leaves/blossoms/etc. have all been a bit off the last few years... makes planning things ahead a bit more difficult haha, but you at least can still find the beauty regardless. But yeah I didn't quite think of that, as living in bear country means bear spray is just very easy to get here, so makes sense why it'd be much cheaper.

There was a ceremony performed by a priest. Due to two camera teams and a huge load of people who wanted to film this I couldn´t get a clear view myself. I also didnt want to interferre, since it was the only day for our trip to get a glympse at Kamikochi. The day after the Nohi bus wouldn´t conenct from Hirayu Onsen any more until the new season is about to begin. It was a blast seeing everything closed and covered in the first snow. It was quite full at the entrace but further down towards the Myojin bridge there were way less people. We didn´t follow the trail further up, since our time was limited :) A couple of years back we made the walk towards the Nishiho Hut, but the pass towards Kamikochi was still unsafe (in the spring). Anyways: That is the most beatiful landscape in all of japan.
